13 Things You Didn’t Know About The Suicide Squad Film

via:www.tattoogen.com

It’s good to be bad. The official trailer has received nearly 50 million hits on YouTube. The “first look” trailer, released at Comic-Con way back in 2015, has received over 66 million YouTube views. It’s a superhero movie with a difference. To begin with, the good guys are bad guys. As one of the characters says, “We’re bad guys. It’s what we do.” And a grinning and sinister Joker says: “I can’t wait to show you my toys.” It’s funny, tongue in cheek, action packed, and full of killer special effects. Twitter has confirmed that, with a million Tweets, it is the most Tweeted about movie of the summer. The buzz is huge, and director David Ayer, has teased fans with Tweets and the release of killer promotional posters and a great trailer. Based on DC Comics’ Task Force X comics (originally set during World War II), the characters in Suicide Squad are all imprisoned super-villains who are recruited by a totally secret government agency. According to IMDb, the deal is simple enough: successfully execute a black ops mission alongside Navy Seals and get reduced sentences. Fail and get thrown under the proverbial bus.

The cast is to die for: there’s Jared Leto as The Joker, Will Smith as Deadshot, Margot Robbie as totally off the wall Harley Quinn, Cara Delevigne as The Enchantress, and Ben Affleck as Batman. And then there’s Captain Boomerang (Jai Courtney), Killer Croc (Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje) and Monster T (Common). There are Navy Seals in abundance and the odd hostage to free. So, what’s not to love? It comes out on August 5th, so mark your calendars and get ready for one super ride. It’s THE superhero movie of the summer. So, here are 13 things you don’t (and will want to) know about Suicide Squad.

13. During Filming, Jared Leto Sent Margot Robbie A Live Rat

Other cast members, including Will Smith and Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaj, got used condoms, a dead pig, and naughty “adult” magazines. Why? Leto has said there was a point. According to Entertainment Weekly, he wanted to get into character and communicate The Joker’s anti-social (some say psychopathic) tendencies. He wanted to make the character menacing. Well, we say he certainly succeeded. Reportedly, no one knew what he would do next. Viola Davis, the star of How to Get Away with Murder, who played the “Bada**” (her words) Amanda Waller, has said she was terrified. Luckily for her, Leto didn’t honor her with one of his “gifts”.

12. Joker and Harley Quinn Stole The Show When A ‘First Look’ Trailer Was Released

Like the earlier DC Comics Batman v Superman: The Dawn of Justice, the publicity for Suicide Squad is textbook brilliant. Warner Brothers and DC Comics have given away Suicide Squad tattoos, drip-fed Tweets laced with enticing rumors, staggered the release of promotional posters and trailers, and even used the 2015 Comic-Con to launch the first teaser trailer. A-List stars such as Will Smith and Viola Davis, took a backseat to the knock out performance by Jared Leto as The Joker and Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn, in the first trailer. Leto and Robbie stole the show. They were the talk of the Internet. It’s easy to see why though, as their characters are funny, dark and way over the top. The buzz for the film started early and shows no signs of having peaked.

11. Ryan Gosling Turned Down The Role Of The Joker

We’ve already said the marketing for the movie has been brilliant. The rumors of who would be cast as which character started early. Some improbable reports stated that Brad Pitt and Daniel Craig were being consider for Deadshot (played by Will Smith). The Revenant star Tom Hardy, was set to play Flag, but had to drop out due to scheduling conflicts. He has praised the script and said he was gutted to have missed the chance to appear in the film. Reportedly, Ryan Gosling was offered the job of playing The Joker, but turned it down. He didn’t want to commit to the multi-film deal that Warner Brothers wanted. Plus, while being a fan of superhero films, it’s not really his acting thing.

10. Even The Good Guys Are Pretty Evil

The supervillains are (by definition) villains, but the good guys are nothing to write home about, either. Let’s look at Amanda Waller. She’s the group’s “handler” and a member of the secret government agency that recruited them. She is also Navy Seal Rick Flag’s boss. In the comics, she was nicknamed “The Wall” and she stopped at nothing to get the group to do what she wanted. She even taunts Deadshot (Will Smith) with never seeing his daughter again. In the comics, she even threatens to kill them and then bring them back to life with a secret serum she holds. Word is that Academy Award winning Viola Davis nails the role of The Wall.

9. Most Of The Cast Got The Suicide Squad Tattoo Inked By Fellow Cast Members

Reports are that most of the cast went under the needle and got the “skwad” tattoo. Publicity shots show none other than Will Smith inking Joel Kinnaman (Rick Flag) and Margot Robbie (Harley Quinn) working on another cast member. It was dubbed “Harley’s Tattoo Parlor”. Director David Ayer, Tweeted away about it. At one point, they even offered fans free tattoos. Fancy being inked by Will Smith? Think again. According to Entertainment Weekly, Kinnaman was not impressed by Will Smith’s tattooing efforts. One of his Instagram posts said Will attempting to tattoo him was like watching a drunk baby flying a helicopter. Stick to the day job, Will.

8. Cara Delevigne Walked In The Buff In A Forest To Prepare

We’re not kidding. According to a Huffington Post article, the actress told W Magazine  that director David Ayer “asked me to go and try and find a forest and, if it was a full moon, get naked and walk through the woods with my feet in the mud, which I did”. Although it wasn’t a full moon, she improvised and threw in howling like a wolf. Don’t look for publicity shots or YouTube videos of that little performance. Will Smith didn’t go quite that far, but he did shave his head and train with Navy Seals. And don’t forget Jared Leto’s nasty, menacing presents to fellow cast members. Apparently, actors will go to extreme lengths to get into character.

7. Nobody Outside The Movie Seems To Know Who The Villain Is

This is not as daft as it sounds. The “mystery” has created no end of Internet speculation, which can only be a good thing for the movie. As of early June 2016, none other than Screen Rant reported it’s not clear who the big Adversary is. Who (or what) exactly is the Squad fighting? In one of the trailers, there is a “mysterious army” opposing the Squad. The movie’s producer (Charles Roven) has called them “The Eyes of the Adversary”. But who the Adversary is remains a mystery. With a movie awash in villains, there is no shortage of candidates for the top job. The Joker is the obvious choice, but The Enchantress comes in a close second. But then again, it could be somebody (or something) else. More buzz.

6. Director David Ayer Wanted The Cast To Be Tormented

From his advice to Cara Delevigne about getting naked, you can probably tell that David Ayer is into realism. He wanted a dark and menacing atmosphere. He wanted his actors to feel tormented. A leaked scene shows just how hard it was to act in the film. Harley Quinn and The Joker, are shown in alternating shots. First they kiss, then she holds a gun to his head. It ends with Joker decking her. Out flat. Many say it is one of the darkest superhero movies ever. Ayer even hired an on-set therapist to help keep the actors grounded. As Adam Beach (who plays Slipknot in the film) told E Online: “We kind of have like a therapist on board if you fall off the wagon and really are villainous.” In other words, don’t take your work home.

5. Characters in Suicide Squad Have Been Villains Elsewhere In The DC Comics Universe

Comics recycle characters. They move from one series to another. Apparently, Batman himself (Ben Affleck) makes an appearance in the film. Deadshot, played by Will Smith, was a sinister opponent of Batman, as was Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie) and Killer Croc (Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje). The classic Batman villain Joker has never been part of Task Force X, but bringing him in as a dark and tormented character in Suicide Squad makes perfect sense. In the Batman universe, Harley Quinn became obsessed with The Joker. Their interaction in Suicide Squad follows on from that. Harley Quinn has always been depicted as totally insane and unhinged, in other words, a dangerous and unpredictable character. Captain Boomerang (Jai Courtney) was an opponent of The Flash, and Enchantress (not to be confused with the Marvel characters) has appeared in Green Lantern.

4. Suicide Squad Blasted By Actors From DC Comics’ TV Show Arrow

CW’s popular TV show Arrow is about the DC Comics’ Green Arrow, but has used characters and situations from Task Force X, on which Suicide Squad is based. A.R.G.U.S. (the secret government agency in Suicide Squad) looms large in the show. Deadshot and Harley Quinn have done turns on the show, and the show had planned to use more of the Task Force X (Suicide Squad) characters in future episodes, but Warner Bros. has put its heavy foot down and said “no”. And, according to Arrow actress Willa Holland, the show has been forced to ax other characters. Those associated with the show are not happy.

3. Warner Brothers Is Already Planning Spin-Offs From The Movie

No wonder Warner is being protective of Suicide Squad’s characters. Following the less than stellar reception for Batman v. Superman: The Dawn of Justice, amid rumors that Warner had its doubts about more DC Comics films, the buzz surrounding Suicide Squad has the studio seeing very big dollar signs. Apparently, they want to bring back Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn in her very own movie. She has confirmed she has signed a “multi-film” deal. Some reports say that Jared Leto is happy to go with a rumored Joker film. Some reports also say that the studio is interested in a Captain Boomerang (Jai Courtney) spin-off. DC Comics seem happy to see where things go and take it a step at a time.

2. Look For New Batman and Suicide Squad Games

Warner’s enthusiasm for Suicide Squad extends beyond spin-off films. Some reports on Gamezone say that there are plans for new Batman and Suicide Squad games. Suddenly, the appearance of Ben Affleck in the movie makes perfect sense. A French website has reported that the Batman game will have a day and a night cycle and feature an even bigger Gotham to explore than in previous versions of the game. Reportedly, the Suicide Squad game will have a third-person shooter. No firm announcement from Warner, but it’s a pretty good bet that some new Batman and Suicide Squad games will appear much sooner than later. So-called leaked versions of the Suicide Squad game have appeared on YouTube.

1. Don’t Listen To The Rumors Of Re-Shoots

For a movie that seems to have virtually 100% positive buzz going for it, rumors that there were a number of re-shoots to address concerns that the movie was just not fun enough got a lot of attention. Is there something wrong in the Suicide Squad universe? In March, Birth Movies Death reported that Warner had requested re-shoots to add a bit of fun to the dark movie. Reports said that as all the funny bits had been shown in trailers, Warner wanted some fresh fun. David Ayer yet again took to Twitter to say it wasn’t so. Re-shoots were done, he said, but only to beef up the action. As far as the Suicide Squad universe is concerned, all (we hope) is well. After all, being bad is good. Dark, but fun is good.
