Let’s face it. The term “best friends” can be used pretty loosely these days. And when it comes to Hollywood, all celebrities have to do is as much as look at each other in front of a camera and suddenly, the tabloids have them pegged as besties. And with Hollywood being as fickle as Hollywood, many times we watch those friendships fizzle out just as fast as they started. Some people might say it’s a female thing and that women just can’t stay friends with each other for long periods of time without turning on each other. But plenty of men are guilty of falling in and out of friendships just like the girls.
Some of these friendships have broken up much more explosively than others. Not surprisingly, many have been rumored to be over members of the opposite sex coming in and getting in the way of the friendship. Even more unsurprisingly, many Hollywood blowups have been reported to be over matters of jealousy in their very highly competitive industry. And then there are others that just remain a matter of speculation and probably always will. But that has never stopped the tabloids from trying to find the story. These are 15 of the biggest feuds of celebrity friends turned enemies. Find out how many make the list more than once. Yes, that means you, Gwenyth Paltrow.
13. Kevin Smith and Ben Affleck
There is perhaps no bigger bromance in Hollywood than that of Ben Affleck and Matt Damon. But one of Ben Affleck’s lesser known friendships was with actor-director-funny man Kevin Smith. It all started when Smith put a then-small named Affleck in his 1995 cult hit, Mallrats. Affleck went on to star in more of Smith’s films, including Chasing Amy, Dogma, Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back and Jersey Girl. But that’s where the list ends. The cat was let out of the bag when Smith was asked about whether or not Affleck would make a good Batman in his highly talked about upcoming role as Batman, and Smith said, “I don’t know, because we’re not f***ing tight. I have not been in decades.”
Smith elaborated on his remark by stating that it was probably because Affleck’s wife, actress Jennifer Garner, doesn’t like Smith. “He’s got a wife that don’t care for me at all,” Smith laughed. “And honestly, he probably don’t care for me at all anymore. He’s a triple-A-list movie star and s**t like that. If he’s Jimmy Carter, I’m Billy Carter, to put it in ’70s terms. And I’m not even related.”
12. Jennifer Garner and Mark Ruffalo
Don’t assume that Ben Affleck and Kevin Smith aren’t close anymore because Jennifer Garner wears the pants in the relationship. Rumor has it that Ben’s pants haven’t gone anywhere.
While Ruffalo and Garner were never what you would call “best” friends, Ruffalo claims that the two of them became close while filming 13 Going On 30 together. During an appearance on the show What Happens Live, an audience member asked Ruffalo if he was still in touch with Garner. Ruffalo paused and raised his eyebrow before answering, “We had a great time together, and I think we would have,” Ruffalo said. “But then Ben came on the scene and that was the end of that.”
11. Paris Hilton and Nicole Richie
Once upon a time, there were no more high profile best friends than notorious party girls Paris Hilton and Nicole Richie. They immortalized their super-close friendship that began as little kids on the reality show, The Simple Life and posed together for countless paparazzi shots in and out of clubs around Hollywood. And then suddenly, they weren’t. Reports immediately began brewing that the two socialites were on the outs. Hilton responded to the accusations in 2005, by saying, “It’s no big secret that Nicole and I are no longer friends. Nicole knows what she did, and that’s all I’m ever going to say about it. The duo have reportedly made amends with each other, but are rarely, if ever, spotted together.
10. Miley Cyrus and Demi Lovato
One might think that two girls growing up in the Disney spotlight together would end up being best friends until the very end. Disney queens Miley Cyrus and Demi Lovato started off on that track. But by 2008, the two decided that they couldn’t play nice together anymore. Rumors have run rampant about what caused their falling out, the most popular being that Cyrus didn’t like how close Lovato became with yet another Disney star, Selena Gomez. The Disney duo denied a riff for years but Lovato finally broke her silence on their differences late in 2014, when it was mentioned in an interview.
“It’s life, and people change,” Lovato said, calling Cyrus just an acquaintance. “I don’t have anything in common with her anymore. I wish her the best.”
9. Gwyenth Paltrow & Madonna
On the surface, Gwyneth Paltrow and Madonna have so much in common. They both share a very vocal admiration for their own abs, an obsession with fitness instructor Tracey Anderson, they both desperately want to be British, and are often accused of being two of the biggest snobs around. That’s probably why the two blondes hit it off so well when they first met and became instant BFFs. However, it didn’t last very long. When Anderson’s fitness business was accused of financial irregularities, Madonna jumped ship and quit endorsing her, while Paltrow refused to take sides. And it doesn’t take a psychic to know that Madonna will not take kindly to someone who takes the side of someone else over her. Paltrow didn’t flinch, though, cryptically venting on her blog Goop about a friend who she didn’t want to be friends with anymore because she left her feeling “drained, empty, and belittled.” But Madge won’t ever take a back seat. A source told Hot Stuff that Madonna went out of her way to make Paltrow feel uncomfortable at the Met Gala in 2013, by blatantly snubbing her and then monopolizing the time of Paltrow’s current BFF, Beyonce. “She chatted with Beyonce for most of the evening and didn’t even glance at Gwyneth,” says the source. “Everyone talked about it.”
And it worked. Paltrow commented on how miserable she was at the Met Gala soon after the event saying, “It was so un-fun, I did not enjoy it at all.”
8. Gwyneth Paltrow and Winona Ryder
Madge isn’t the only one to fall out of grace with Gwyneth Paltrow. Long before The Material Girl came along, Paltrow was buddy-buddy with actress Winona Ryder. The two were often spotted together in public and were so close that Paltrow even reportedly stayed with Ryder after her break up from Brad Pitt.
Neither actress has publicly talked about their falling out, but the rampant rumor around Hollywood was that it happened when Paltrow found the script for Shakespeare in Love at Ryder’s house and went behind her back to audition for the part of which she didn’t just land, but also won an Oscar for.
Once again, Paltrow made comments on her website Goop that many interpreted to be about Ryder, although she was not named specifically. “Back in the day, I had a ‘frenemy’ who, as it turned out, was pretty hellbent on taking me down,” Paltrow wrote. “I restrained myself from fighting back. I tried to take the high road. But one day I heard that something unfortunate and humiliating had happened to this person. And my reaction was deep relief and happiness.”
7. Tiffani Thiessen and Jennie Garth
Jennie Garth was a Beverly Hills 90210 alum by the time Tiffani Thiessen joined the crew. By that time, stories about Garth’s falling out with costar Shannen Doherty were old news – and, in all fairness, who didn’t Doherty have a falling out with back then? Thiessen replaced Doherty’s character on the popular show. Maybe it was shell shock from her experience with Doherty, but reports were that Garth took a while to warm up to Thiessen. Thiessen told Howard Stern that Garth even later apologized to her for how mean she was to her, which lead to the two becoming close friends. So close, in fact, that Theissen is even said to have been in the delivery room when Garth gave birth to her first child. But then, something happened between the two which they’ve never been able to reconcile. Thiessen wouldn’t go into detail on why, but she did tell Stern “I was the one who was hurt, let’s just say that.” She continued, “It’s funny, our relationship started really rough and ended the way it started.”
6. Bill Murray & Harold Ramis
There’s no denying that Bill Murray and Harold Ramis did some of their best work together: Ghostbusters, Stripes and Caddyshack, to name a few. The two were reportedly great friends with a foundation set in comedic gold. But, when the two took on the project of Groundhog Day together, everything seemed to fall apart. Before his untimely death, Ramis explained his side of the feud, saying that Murray was depressed and very difficult to work with during filming. Ramis was trying to direct and Murray grew frustrated with not getting his way, and went out of his way to make things challenging, even hiring a deaf personal assistant which everyone had to use to get to Murray. Ramis never spoke ill about Murray, though, he did say that he remained the “thorniest of the group” when trying to get the Ghostbusters 3 movie running. Ramis unfortunately passed away before the two could ever reconcile.
5. Heidi Montag & Lauren Conrad
If the hills really do have eyes, then they were all on Heidi Montag and Lauren Conrad when they had their very public feud. The two were inseparable friends who began to grow apart when Montag began dating now-husband, Spencer Pratt. “He’s a sucky person,” Conrad told Montag on their reality show, The Hills. But, Montag chose her relationship with Spencer over her friendship with Conrad, which caused major tension between the two. Then rumors surfaced that Montag was telling everyone that there was a sex tape of Conrad going around, although Montag denied it. Conrad screamed “You know what you did,” to Montag on their show. And even after Montag tried to mend fences between the two of them, Conrad refused. She cried on the show telling Montag “I want to forgive you and I want to forget you.”
4. Heather Locklear and Denise Richards
What would you do if your best friend started having a relationship with your very-recently ex-husband? Probably exactly what Heather Locklear did when it was discovered that her close pal Denise Richards, was involved in a relationship with her ex of just three months, Richie Sambora. Richards eventually broke her silence to give her side of the story to Redbook magazine, stating that the two ended their friendship months before Richards began her relationship with Sambora. “I don’t want to say what caused the split, but she and I weren’t even speaking then,” Richards said. “It wasn’t ever like we’d be shopping and go back to her house and I’d flirt with her husband. Yes, I got together with Heather’s soon-to-be ex-husband, but no, I didn’t have an affair with him.”
3. Blake Lively and Leighton Meester
To say that the friendship between Blake Lively and Leighton Meester was life imitating art would be too obvious. But, when you co-star on a show called Gossip Girl together, in which the two of you are habitual frenemies, what else can be said? The two friends were reported to be on shaky ground with each other during the last two seasons filming their hit show. Co-star Chace Crawford hinted at the tension between the pair by saying, “There are obviously always little dramas. You are on set for 16 hours, so people get irritable. In any workplace there are always little things and frustrations.” But it was when Lively didn’t call Meester to congratulate her on her engagement to actor Adam Brody, that their decision to not stay close after filming wrapped up, reportedly became apparent.
2. Ariana Grande and Jennette McCurdy
Nickelodeon fame brought Ariana Grande and Jennette McCurdy together with their hit show Sam & Cat. And it’s probably that same fame that split them apart in the end. The co-stars were admittedly best friends through most of the show’s timeline. But McCurdy began getting very vocal about trouble in paradise. Things started going sour around the time that Nickelodeon announced it would be cancelling Sam & Kat. Suddenly, problems began popping up everywhere. Grande’s music career continued to get bigger, as did big rumors about her even bigger ego. McCurdy was also reportedly frustrated that she thought she was the queen of Nickelodeon until Grande came along and ruined it.
1. Paris Hilton and Kim Kardashian
Paris Hilton couldn’t stay friends with Nicole Richie… In fact, is there anyone who Hilton can stay friends with? She might have trouble keeping them, but she doesn’t have any trouble making them. The two became best friends back in 2006, when the girls turned into a socialite butterflies. But the ugly side of jealousy began to surface when Kardashian began getting a bigger chunk of the spotlight than Hilton preferred. And when Kardashian’s infamous sex tape surfaced, everything fell apart. Hilton was quoted in an interview making fun of the size of her ex-pal’s now-famously large butt and saying that it looked like cottage cheese in a garbage bag. The two said that they had patched things up and continued to play nice for the cameras (somewhat). Shortly thereafter, the two were never seen in public together again. But when Hilton was asked on Good Morning America if she felt like her moment had passed, Hilton abruptly ended the interview by snapping “Not at all” and the two haven’t been seen together since.
