Most people know that Lamar Odom has played for the Los Angeles Lakers and the San Antonio Spurs. Even if you’re not a sports fan, you probably know that Odom was married to Khloe Kardashian, and that the two tied the knot after knowing each other for just a few months. Of course, the marriage received a lot of public scrutiny, and the two had a reality show that was a spin-off of Keeping Up With the Kardashians.
Unfortunately, Lamar Odom was recently admitted to the hospital after having an adverse reaction to herbal supplements. It was reported that Odom took too much of a natural form of Viagra while visiting the Love Ranch in Nevada. He was unconscious when he was taken to the hospital, and recent reports reveal that he is now responsive and breathing on his own. Even though he and Khloe have been estranged for more than a year and are legally separated, Kardashian was right by his side when she heard about his accident, and sources are saying that Odom has been responding to her voice and her presence. There’s no confirmation that the two are going to completely patch up their marriage, but it’s nice to see that Khloe is serving as his support system during this time.
It seems that Lamar Odom is full of surprises, both good and bad. So, it’s not surprising that there are some things about Odom that you probably didn’t know, even if you’re a basketball fan. Here are 12 shocking things about Lamar Odom.
12. Odom Has Been Battling Drugs For A While
Unfortunately, drug problems are not new to Lamar Odom. After he spent just one season playing for the University of Rhode Island, Odom was the number-four draft pick for the Los Angeles Clippers in 1999. In the span of just eight months, he was suspended from the team twice, because he failed to adhere to the NBA’s policy against drugs. Days after Odom was suspended the second time, he admitted during a press conference, while in tears, that he’d been smoking marijuana. He stated that he’d made “a couple of mistakes” and that he’d probably make more, but he stressed that he hoped his future mistakes wouldn’t be as big as being suspended for using drugs, according to the LA Times. As we know, his life definitely got more complicated after that point.
11. Odom Was Involved In A Fatal Car Accident
In 2011, Lamar Odom flew to New York to attend his 24-year-old cousin’s funeral. The next day, he was involved in a fatal car accident. The SUV he was riding in hit a motorcycle, which spun out of control and hit a teenage boy named Awsaf Alvi Islam. Islam, who was 15 at the time, died the following day due to brain injuries. Odom told the LA Times that “Death always seems to be around” him and that he’s “been burying people for a long time.” He states that dealing with his cousin’s death and then having to witness Islam’s death took a huge toll on him. He stated that he was “doing a lot of reflecting” as a result of these tragic events.
10. He Went To Rehab
Four days after Lamar Odom was arrested in September of 2013, People Magazine reported that Odom checked himself into rehab. He decided to get help for both alcohol and drug abuse. According to sources, the athlete realized that he needed help to overcome his addictions. Odom also realized that his vices were taking a huge toll on his marriage to Khloe Kardashian. The two were marred in 2009, but by 2013, it was clear that the two were having some relationship issues that were too much to handle. Kardashian supposedly supported Odom’s decision to go to rehab, but that alone wasn’t enough to save their marriage.
9. Odom Went Missing—Then Got A DUI
The month before Odom went to rehab in 2013, he reportedly went missing for three days. Some news sources say that during these three days, Lamar Odom was actually staying in a hotel, where he was attempting to kick his drug habit. A few days after reports of Odom missing were leaked to the media, the basketball player was arrested and booked for a DUI. A member of the California Highway Patrol noticed that Odom was swerving on the road. Odom pleaded no contest and got three years probation. He also had to pay a fee of a little over $1,800 and was required to take three months of alcohol counseling.
8. He Has Buried A Child
Many people know about Lamar Odom’s son and daughter with his ex-girlfriend, Liza Morales. However, the former couple also had another son named Jayden. He, unfortunately, died from Sudden Infant Death Syndrome in New York while sleeping in his crib. Morales wrote for The Daily Beast about the tragedy in 2013. She stated that she and Lamar never really discussed Jayden’s passing. Odom has also stated that it took him a long time to actually start the grieving process. Morales also confirmed that she and Odom split shortly after burying their son, since she found out that Odom was still in a long-term relationship with someone else.
7. Odom Appeared In A Rap “Video”
A number of athletes dream of being rappers or singers, and some have even appeared in music videos for their favorite artists. Lamar Odom had the privilege of being in the music video for “We Made It” by rapper Busta Rhymes and Linkin Park. However, in November of 2013, Odom also made a rap video of his own. A friend appeared in the amateur video with him, and Lamar rapped about several things, including cheating on his wife Khloe. He stated that when his wife is out of town he is still “going on the DL.” This rap video was reportedly the last straw for Khloe, and led her to finally file for divorce.
6. His NBA Career Has Been Going Downhill For Some Time
Lamar Odom is known for winning two championships with the Los Angeles Lakers. However, his NBA career ended abruptly, because he just couldn’t perform up to standards. He was once traded to the Dallas Mavericks, but was put on the D-League team for the Mavericks, the Texas Legends, shortly after the trade. The demotion happened because Odom was missing too many games for “personal reasons.” The next season, Odom went to the Clippers, but only for one season. In 2014, Odom tried to make a comeback in basketball by owning a Spanish Team, but two months later, he had to stop playing due to an injury. He was then signed to the New York Knicks, but the decision was waived by coach Phil Jackson. Jackson stated that Lamar wasn’t able to uphold NBA standards.
5. Odom Spent Three Days At The Love Ranch
The most recent story about Lamar Odom involves him spending three days at The Love Ranch in Nevada. According to Dennis Hof (the Love Ranch owner), Odom was picked up from a home in Las Vegas and was driven to the Love Ranch. Hof stated that Lamar came to the ranch because he wanted to “get away, have a good time and relax.” According to some of his former teammates, Odom has been known to disappear without warning for days at a time. These teammates made these statements for a Sports Illustrated article, which was published after Odom was rushed to the hospital after being at the Love Ranch.
4. Odom’s Marriage Fell Apart—For Several Reasons
It’s no surprise by now that Khloe has filed for divorce from Lamar. Arrests, attempts at rehab, and several rumors concerning Lamar’s infidelity are among the reasons why the marriage has been on the rocks for quite some time. In December of 2013, after a few years of turmoil, Kardashian finally decided that she’d had enough. Even though the terms of the divorce were made final in July of 2015, Kardashian and Odom are still legally married, since a judgment hasn’t been entered into court yet. Khloe has stated that she will always love Lamar, but she realizes that there’s nothing she can do, and that Lamar has to change on his own.
3. Odom Stalked Khloe Kardashian
It’s also not a secret that even though Lamar has allegedly cheated on his wife several times and left their home for days without anyone being aware of his whereabouts, he didn’t want to get a divorce. Odom even ambushed Kardashian when she was on her way to a SoulCycle class in Beverly Hills. Reportedly, Lamar was screaming at Khloe to get her attention and tried to touch her arm. Khloe yelled for him to get off her, and quickly left the area in her car. Maybe Khloe is finally coming to terms with the fact that Lamar isn’t quite ready to repair his life (or their marriage).
2. Odom Took Cocaine At The Love Ranch (Not For The First Time)
A large part of the reason that Lamar Odom had to be rushed to the hospital after spending a few days at the Love Ranch is because he’d been using cocaine. The 911 caller of this incident told the dispatcher that Odom had been doing cocaine and that he had “blood coming out of his nose.” The caller also confirmed that Lamar had “white stuff coming out of his mouth”, and these are definite signs that a person’s life is in extreme danger. Richard Hunter, The Love Ranch’s media director, also confirmed with USA Today that Lamar Odom did cocaine on the Saturday of the weekend he was at the Love Ranch, but couldn’t confirm if he’d done the drug since then.
1. He Has Supporters Around The Country
While pretty much everyone knows about Lamar Odom’s recent brush with death, not many people know that he has the support of friends and family around the US. Some people wondered whether Khloe would be by his side, and she as proven that she loves Lamar no matter what. Kris Jenner, Odom’s mother in law, has also shown her support for Lamar. Celebrity host Ryan Seacrest has sent well wishes to Odom as well. SportsCenter’s Scott Van Pelt also urged people to see Lamar Odom as a basketball player, and not just a reality star. He states that while he understands that not everyone watches sports, he was well known before his marriage to Khloe and connection to the Kardashians.
