Celebrities are known for a lot of things: spending money on ridiculous items, doing extreme things to get attention, starring in horrible movies and TV shows, just to name a few. Some celebrities also feel that getting into feuds with other famous people will make them more relevant. In cases, the public takes the bait and becomes interested in the celebrity “fight.” This may provide a temporary sense of fame, but after the feud is over, some celebrities are pegged as childish and emotionally unstable for quite some time.
Of course, there are times when famous people get into real disagreements with each other, and things can get ugly. After all, celebrities are human, too. Unfortunately (or fortunately, if you’re into that sort of thing), celebrities often take to social media and other public platforms to make the details of the feud more well-known to their fans. This causes the public to take sides, and may work to the advantage of the celebrity who is “innocent.” However, making a fight public always has its risks. But you know what they say in Hollywood: all publicity is good publicity. Sometimes, the situation doesn’t turn into a full-fledged fight. Instead, celebrities engage with each other just enough to get a few good insults in, which can be just as effective. Still, there are still a few celebrity “jabs” that we just can’t seem to get out of our heads. Here are 12 of the worst celebrity disses.
12. Bette Davis vs Joan Crawford
These two iconic actresses were seen together on screen in the film Whatever Happened to Baby Jane? but that doesn’t mean they were friends in real life. According to a long-standing Hollywood rumor, Davis dissed Crawford by stating that Joan “slept with every male star at MGM, except Lassie.” Brutal. Apparently, being extremely catty and trying to defame the characters of other celebrities is not new at all. There have also long been rumors about certain famous people sleeping their way to the top, so it looks like the concept of tabloids and reality shows isn’t all that new after all.
11. Chelsea Handler vs Piers Morgan
Chelsea Handler isn’t exactly known for holding her tongue, and the outspoken comedian and former talk show host made it clear that she’s not afraid of anyone during her interview with Piers Morgan. Handler called Morgan out for Tweeting during the commercial break of her interview with him, and said “you can’t even pay attention for 60 seconds. You’re a terrible interviewer.” Well, there’s no misunderstanding there. Morgan replied that he was bored during the interview, and Chelsea told him, “you signed up for this job. Maybe that’s why your job is coming to an end.” That’s got to hurt.
10. Brooke Shields vs Tom Cruise
Tom Cruise was pretty hurtful and insensitive towards Brooke Shields when he talked about her use of antidepressants to manage her postpartum depression. Cruise stated during an Access Hollywood interview that those drugs are “dangerous” and that he actually helped people come off of the medications. Cruise also stated that it’s better for women to use vitamins to cure their postpartum depression. He probably should have kept his mouth shut, since he’s not a woman and will never have to experience the changes that come with having a baby. Shields stated that Tom’s statements were “a disservice to mothers everywhere.” Some say that Cruise’s Scientology beliefs had a lot to do with his statements, but either way, he probably should have kept quiet.
9. Julie Andrews vs Audrey Hepburn
Julie Andrews, who is known for her timeless roles such as Mary Poppins and Maria from The Sound of Music, was a little catty in the early part of her career. During the Golden Globes in 1965, Andrews won the award for her role in Mary Poppins. Of course, Andrews is known for her sweet demeanor on screen, she definitely took a dig at Hepburn when she accepted her award. Julie thanked Jack Warner, who cast Hepburn over her in My Fair Lady. Hepburn was also nominated for Best Actress in the same category. It seems like Julie Andrews left her catty days behind and is seen as an iconic actress, along with Hepburn.
8. Eminem vs Nick Cannon
Mariah Carey and Eminem have been at odds for years. Nick Cannon, Carey’s now-ex husband got upset with rapper Eminem in 2009, for insulting Mariah on his album, The Warning. Cannon stated on his blog that Eminem was obsessed with Mariah, and was bitter about the fact that Carey rejected him years ago. Eminem insists that he and Carey had a “thing” at one point, although Mariah denies having any romantic connection to him. Few things bruise a man’s ego than being rejected by a woman and having that woman’s husband call him out. However, Eminem has been a lot calmer these days (he can be pretty brutal when it comes to insults). Also, Nick doesn’t have to defend Carey anymore since she’s newly engaged.
7. Elton John vs Madonna
Legendary singers Madonna and Elton John have been feuding for quite some time. During the 2004 Q Awards, Elton dissed Madonna and stated that there was no way she was the best live act. Elton stated “since when has lip-synching been live? Sorry about that, but I think everyone who lip-syncs on stage in public when you pay like 75 quid to see them should be shot.” Those are some pretty strong words. John also stated that he had a feeling his comments were probably going to get him off of Madonna’s Christmas card list, but he didn’t care. Ouch.
6. Jesse James vs Sandra Bullock
It’s no surprise that celebrity breakups can be pretty messy. Everyone knows by now that Sandra Bullock and Jesse James used to be married, but the two divorced in 2010. James was also previously engaged to Kat Von D after his breakup from Bullock, and was asked during a Howard Stern interview which of these women was the better lover. Jesse James is known for being completely classless, and answered that it was a “no brainer” that Kat Von D was better in bed and was a “vixen.” Well, at least he got the “no brainer” part right. He later said that he was joking. Bullock, on the other hand, has remained classy, even after this huge diss. Some things just aren’t worth a response.
5. Patti LuPone vs Glenn Close
The feud between these legendary actresses started when Andrew Lloyd Webber replaced Patti LuPone with Glenn Close in Sunset Boulevard, in 1994. Since it’s not really safe career-wise for actors to get mad at producers and directors when something like this happens, Patti decided to direct her anger toward Glenn Close. However, LuPone did take legal action against Webber and ended up winning her case. Later, Patti wrote an autobiography, in which she indicated that Close wasn’t exactly the innocent party in the situation. Apparently, the two were good friends before the incident, and Patti stated that “from the time” Glenn Close was announced as her replacement, she hadn’t heard from her. Looks like Close dissed LuPone without saying a word.
4. Kelly Osbourne vs Michael Jackson
Sure, there were a few celebs out there who didn’t care too much for Michael Jackson’s personal life choices, but most people had to admit that Jackson was (and continues to be, in some opinions) the reigning King of Pop, even though he passed away in 2009. Kelly Osbourne, who is known for being outspoken and sometimes putting her foot in her mouth (much like her mom Sharon), posted on social media that she wanted people to “just get over Michael Jackson—he’s dead!” It’s hard to believe that a person could be so insensitive, but this was just another classic case of Kelly saying too much and regretting it later.
3. Kanye West vs Taylor Swift
People still haven’t forgotten how rapper and clothing designer (?) Kanye West dissed Taylor Swift at the VMAs in 2009. He interrupted her acceptance speech by rushing the stage, taking her award away, and declaring that Beyonce should have been the winner. We’re still so surprised that a person could be so bold (and by “bold,” we mean obnoxious). West has since apologized to Swift, admitted that he was drunk at the time, and the two stars have been on good terms ever since. But, as we know, this hasn’t been the first time that Kanye West has insulted a fellow celebrity. And judging from his recent Twitter battle with Wiz Khalifa (which is also apologized for), it probably won’t be the last.
2. Justin Bieber vs Usher
Recently, a video of Justin Bieber leaked the disdain for his former mentor Usher. When Justin was asked about Usher, he pretended not to know him, stating that Usher’s name “sounded familiar.” Justin Bieber was also asked during the deposition if Usher helped to launch him into stardom. Bieber replied that he was “found on YouTube,” which is obviously his way of not giving Usher any credit for his career. Clearly, if Usher hadn’t introduced Bieber to L.A. Reid, there’s no telling where his career would be. Biebs has been known to be pretty mean and immature, but this is one celebrity diss that probably crossed the line.
1. 50 Cent vs Floyd Mayweather
Rapper, actor and business mogul 50 Cent, has been known to be involved in a few celebrity feuds with people like his ex Vivica Fox and Meek Mill. But no celebrity diss from 50 Cent seems to be as intense as the borage of insults he continues to sling at Floyd Mayweather. The rapper has accused Mayweather of being illiterate. When there was a rumor going around that Floyd Mayweather was having an affair with T.I.’s wife Tiny, 50 Cent wrote a fake love letter to Tiny as though it was from Mayweather, with several words misspelled. It seems that the two are friends though, since 50 Cent stated in an interview at Power 105 that he and boxer Floyd Mayweather are like brothers, but Mayweather does things to aggravate him. Sounds like a pretty complicated relationship.
