Hollywood is often the ideal place for a love story to form on screen. However, there are times when the chemistry between actors is just too strong, and they have to act on it. Of course, this is risky, because it’s hard to tell whether the connection simply comes from working together, or if it’s something more. There are also some cases in which the co-stars of movies are “asked” to be together for the sake of promoting the movie. Sure, movie executives and agents would never admit this, but sometimes it’s a convincing marketing plan.
Of course, there are some instances in which an on-screen couple falls in love while shooting a movie, and ends up being together in real life. Some people have actually been able to make their relationships work for years now. This just goes to show you that it’s quite possible to find love at work, and it’s not always a bad thing to date your co-workers.
Whether you believe that these couples are together for the “right” reasons or you’re suspicious about the motives for these Hollywood romances, there’s no denying that these relationships are fun to watch. Here are 12 movie couples who actually started real-life relationships.
12. Rachel Weisz and Daniel Craig
Craig and Weisz had an on-screen relationship in the horror movie Dream House. Apparently, this sparked some real-life chemistry between them, because the two started dating, even though they’d been friends long before the movie. They kept their relationship a secret for quite some time, and tied the knot in 2013. Both Rachel Weisz and Daniel Craig are accomplished actors on stage and on screen. Weisz is a former model who has appeared in the movies Sunshine, The Mummy Returns and The Runaway Jury. Daniel Craig is best known for being the latest actor to portray the legendary character James Bond.
11. Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell
Kurt Russell and Goldie Hawn met for the first time at Disney Studios, and the first movie they made together was The One and Only, Genuine, Original Family Band. However, they remained friends until 1984, when they filmed Swing Shift together. Russell and Hawn then made Overboard three years later. They’ve been together for more than two decades, and are one of the rare Hollywood couples who have stayed together for so long without getting married. Goldie also had two children before she and Kurt started dating, actors Kate and Oliver. The two have long regarded Kurt Russell as their father, much to the chagrin of their biological dad.
10. Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall
This classic couple has long been seen as the Hollywood standard for romance, even though their relationship was not without drama. Humphrey Bogart is one of the most famous film noir actors of all time. He met beautiful actress Lauren Bacall, when the two filmed the movie To Have and Have Not. The two had a chemistry that couldn’t be denied on screen, but their romance turned into a real life one as well. However, their love story came with a lot of controversy. Bogart was 25 years older than Bacall, and when he met the actress, he was still married to Mayo Methot, who was also an actress. In 1945, Humphrey divorced Mayo so that he could make Lauren his wife.
9. Alec Baldwin and Kim Basinger
Alec Baldwin and Kim Basinger had one of the most passionate relationships of the 1990s. They were often seen showing each other affection in public, and everyone believed they would be together forever. The two actors met while filming the movie The Marrying Man in 1991, and three years later, they were husband and wife. The duo were married for seven years, and those years were filled with angry outbursts and passionate arguments. In 2001, Basinger and Baldwin decided to divorce, but the process was pretty messy. You may also recall Alec leaving a pretty nasty message for his daughter in the heat of the divorce proceedings. Luckily, they’ve both moved on since then.
8. Kevin Bacon and Kyra Sedgwick
Lemon Sky is the movie where talented actors Kevin Bacon and Kyra Sedgwick met. This was in 1988, and the two decided to marry that same year—they’ve been together ever since. Even though they’ve been husband and wife for 25 years, it is easy to tell that they’re still madly in love with each other. They’ve made it clear that since their children moved out of the home in 2012, Sedgwick and Bacon have been on a mission to rekindle their romance. Kyra even told The Daily Mail that she and her husband walk around the house naked a lot more now.
7. Jennifer Garner and Ben Affleck
Jennifer Garner and Ben Affleck have been in the news a lot lately, since there have been reports that the two are ending their decade-long marriage. After Affleck broke up with Jennifer Lopez in 2003, Ben decided to try the “Jennifer” thing one more time. However, this time, he was smart enough to keep the relationship out of the spotlight until the two were serious. Garner and Affleck had worked together before, but when the two starred together in Daredevil in 2003, the sparks started to fly. The couple has three children together, and there have recently been reports that Garner and Affleck have been seen in public together, which leads many to believe that they may be rekindling their romance.
6. Russell Crowe and Meg Ryan
Remember the action movie Proof of Life? In the film, Meg Ryan’s husband is kidnapped, and Russell Crowe plays the negotiator who is hired to free Ryan’s spouse. However, Meg and Russell’s characters start to fall for each other, which makes things complicated when it comes to freeing Meg’s husband (in the movie). The two actors started to feel an attraction for each other in real life, and they have a very public affair, since Meg was married to fellow actor Dennis Quaid at the time. After nine years of marriage, Ryan and Quaid divorced. However, there were rumors that Quaid cheated first, suggesting that Russell and Meg’s relationship was “justified.”
5. Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton
Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor had a turbulent relationship that the reality show cameras of today would have loved to capture. The two met in 1963, when filming the movie Cleopatra. The reason their attraction was so believable on screen was because the actors were falling for each other in real life. In the 1960s and 1970s, Taylor and Burton were one of the most passionate and glamorous couples to watch. They got married in 1964, but divorced ten years later. The year after their divorce (1975), they decided to get married again, but were divorced again the following year.
4. Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth
Liam Hemsworth and Miley Cyrus met while filming The Last Song, in 2009. Cyrus was a rebellious teen with a good heart underneath it all, and Hemsworth played her hot love interest. It wasn’t long before the two were dating in real life, and embarked in a four-year romance. They also got engaged and had plans to get married in 2013. However, in September of that year, they decided to call off the relationship, stating that they were too young to tie the knot, according to an interview with Barbara Walters. There were rumors that Miley wanted him back and wrote him a letter to try and start their romance up again. However, Cyrus should probably calm down a bit before Hemsworth can take her seriously again.
3. Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson
A large part of the reason why the Twilight movies and books were so popular is because fans were following the real-life romance of Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson. Some wonder whether or not the relationship is real, or whether the actors pretended to be a couple just to promote the Twilight franchise. It seems a little suspicious that the couple started having “problems” near the end of the last Twilight film, when Kristin started filming a new movie and had an affair with the director. Stewart and Pattinson had reportedly made plans to marry, but the engagement was called off after news broke about Kristen’s affair.
2. Vanessa Hudgens and Zac Efron
Zac Efron and Vanessa Hudgens were one of the Disney Channel’s cutest couples, and they met on the set of High School Musical. There were two more sequels to this popular film, and teen and pre-teen films tuned into the movies in part because they were enchanted with Hudgens and Efron’s off-screen romance. It was reported that the two decided to call it quits because of Efron’s drug problems and infidelity. Zac has since been to rehab, and Vanessa has moved on to date Josh Hutcherson. The two have been together for a few years and seem very happy.
1. Brad Pit and Angelina Jolie
Everyone remembers the story of how Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt met on the set of the 2005 movie, Mr. & Mrs. Smith. At the time, Pitt was still married to Jennifer Aniston, but the two soon divorced, and he and Jolie started living together. They were together for years before finally deciding to tie the knot, and they have several adopted children together, as well as three biological children, including a set of twins. After fans got over the shock and anger of Brad Pitt stepping out on Aniston, it was plain to see that Angelina and Brad had a real connection, and it doesn’t look like they’ll be breaking up any time soon.
