Sometimes celebs make good choices and sometimes their perspective is a little off. It just proves they are normal people who don’t wake up looking fresh and fabulous, like their promoters would have us believe.
How many times do we look back and seriously regret an outfit or hairstyle? It is humiliating, particularly if you happen to notice within hours or days instead of years later when you can more easily laugh about it.
Well, think about it. Stars see their fashion disasters within days, even minutes, of making them as there are always plenty of photographers around to capture those mistakes and hundreds of methods for sharing. It is always too late to do anything about it but succumb to the ridicule of the industry. Now that Joan Rivers has passed on, let’s see how the fashion police handles the upcoming awards season, beginning with the Golden Globes. Joan was known for her fairly-brutal, but entertaining, way of cutting to the chase of good taste.
The last few years of red carpet fashion mistakes makes us believe this list should be much longer. Many fashion faux pas have been made, yet not all stars will give public retrospectives on their disasters. However, we managed to find a few who were readily admitting they didn’t know what they were thinking and today we’re going to share a list of 12 of the best red carpet fashion regrets.
Kristen was a mere 11-years-old when she wore this drab, figure-hiding ensemble. She wore this at the premiere of the Panic Room in 2002, a film co-starred with Jodie Foster. According to an interview with Marie Claire UK, Kristen still considers herself a tomboy, but “I had like these baby hairs and I was being weird about them, so I was like, “I’m just gonna cut them off. And I had like these little things like poking out from under my hair and behind my ears, and a ridiculous outfit. I did not know how to get dressed up at that age at all. I didn’t even know what I liked. I was just like a completely… goofy kid.”
It was that sheer Alexander McQueen gown that Gwyneth wore without a bra at the 2002 Oscar ceremony that may be her biggest fashion regret. She actually admitted it in her own newsletter, according to fashionista.com. “There were a few issues; I still love the dress itself but I should have worn a bra and I should have just had simple beachy hair and less makeup. Then, it would have worked as I wanted it to – a little bit of punk at the Oscars.”
Selena recalls her worst red carpet fashion look when she went to the Teen Vogue Young Hollywood party. She wore this Hotter Than I Thought t-shirt with wide belt, shorts and leggings. She also reports, “I remember going on my first red carpet with skinny jeans and sneakers like, awesome, this is not a look that I would do ever again … I feel like when I wore sneakers and a lot of jeans to red carpets my stylist was really mortified.”
Taylor Swift has been walking red carpets since she was 16-years-old (2005). In her opinion, According to an interview in Yahoo Shine, Taylor had quite a few red carpet fashion regrets. She says, “I think since I missed prom so many times, I would wear prom-like dresses. Princessy pastels… I can’t remember a specific one. I just see them all as a blur.” Miss T is now known for being quite the fashionista, so she learned quickly and generally looks perfect from head to toe.
For Eva, her horrible fashion choice was when she wore a lavender gown to the premiere of Ghost Rider in New York City. “It was a beautiful dress, but the way I put everything together, it was a Princess Jasmine gone wrong. The strapless, purple dress with necklaces and hair in a really high braid. It’s not a good look,” is what Mendez admitted in an interview with Associated Press. Mendez is generally fashion-striking and has made many best dressed lists since that unfortunate choice.
Whitney Port, former reality show on The Hills, has been on her share of red carpets. She, like most, has her share of red carpet mistakes. She got her start as a fashion designer on the reality show and has since gone on to create her own line, Whitney Eve. One of her most regretted memories is when she wore a red dress with black polka dots and black tights at The Hills finale party. “But there’s one dress that I looked like a ladybug in that I wore to a red carpet event. ”
6. Kelly Brook
Fashion model and actress, Kelly Brook, has been the first to admit that sometimes she is just too busy to select the perfect fashion choices. Reports of the 34-year-old beauty in Bang Showbiz last year were interested, when she said, “I have [regrets] every day. I sometimes see pictures and think, “urgh, why did I put that on? I’m a busy girl and I don’t always have time to put a perfect outfit together.”
Sienna is one who has honestly admitted that she used to have horrible style. She has since thrown out all of the awkward clothes she used to own. She said, “I used to have horrible style. I had pink and white hair and I had this giant paper-maché sea horse that rattled when I’d wear it on my neck. I was mental and you’re so lucky I’ve changed.”
A few years ago, Sienna and her sister developed their own fashion label, Twenty8Twelve, yet in 2012 the women stepped down from the position of co-creative directors to pursue other things.
Well, the 2001 MTV VMA awards was probably one of the few regrets he may have from the early 2000’s.
But that year, when Britney Spears and Justin showed up in matching denim outfits, it was more than the more mature audience could bear. Timberlake was quoted in Playboy as saying, “God, I feel I’ve gone to therapy just to erase some of them. The cornrows I wore with ‘N Sync. That was pretty bad. Britney and I wore matching outfits. Yeah, another bad choice. I’d probably pay good money to get some of those pictures off the internet.” We can’t say that we blame him, although the Disney couple did look adorable in their matching ensembles.
Rose McGowan is a lovely lady with a beautiful figure, but even she remembers this “gown” as a fashion mistake. Her date to the 1998 MTV VMA awards was punk-style Marilyn Manson, so it may have seemed extremely fitting for the times. But, maybe the completely exposed booty might have been just a little over the top. Rose told Maxim in a 1999 interview, “I wore it to cause an uproar, but I’ll confess that I did change into another dress after walking up the red carpet. Those little strands in the back would have given me griddle butt if I’d sat down.”
Anne‘s story was one of second-guessing oneself at the last minute and going from great to okay. She changed from a Valentino gown to Prada because she was concerned her Valentino was too similar to the one Amanda Seyfried would be wearing. She felt badly as Valentino was counting on her to wear their gown, so she made a public apology in People magazine, “Though I love the dress I did wear, it was a difficult last minute decision as I had so looked forward to wearing Valentino in honor of the deep and meaningful relationship I have enjoyed with the house and with Valentino himself.”
Robert Downey Jr.
Robert Downey Jr. is about 5’8″ tall, which is a fairly average height for many A-List leading actors. But at the 1993 Oscars, Robert wore platform sneakers to appear to be taller that his wife, Deborah Falconer. He regrets that decision and said, “I wore these Ziggy Stardust platform shoes. Imagine leather shoes with five Goodyear tires on the bottom.” Perhaps they wouldn’t have looked so out of place if they had black soles instead of the white, which really stood out. Reports from celebitchy.com and other online publications say Downey generally wears platform shoes.
