It’s not a secret (or a surprise) that alcohol flows pretty freely in Hollywood. Champagne is a staple at many awards shows, and virtually all the pictures you see of celebrities hosting lavish parties features some form of alcohol. That’s why it’s also not a surprise that many of your favorite musicians and actors have drinking problems—even if they’re not always willing to admit it.
However, there are also a few celebs who don’t have a problem letting the public know that they were pretty drunk while filming a project. This should be seen as a cry for help, but most people just sweep it under the rug as comedy, or commend the celebrities for being “real.” We’ve seen over the years that famous people do, indeed, suffer from addictions. Often, people don’t take that seriously until the celebrity is in really bad shape—or until it’s too late to help.
Whether you think that finding out that celebs were wasted while filming is a “fun fact”, or it causes you to be concerned about your favorite famous person(s), it’s pretty safe to say that drinking on the job isn’t professional. Unless, of course, you’re in Hollywood and can get away with it. Here are 12 celebrities who don’t mind if you know they were drunk on set.
12. Neve Campbell – Wild Things
Even though Wild Things was released in 1998, most people who have seen the movie still remember “that scene” when Neve Campbell, along with her co-stars Denise Richards and Matt Dillon, got to…know each other a little better. It has even been called “the greatest menage-a-trois in movie history.” It’s understandable that a scene like that may call for a little “liquid courage”, and Neve was not shy about admitting that she and her co-stars shared a bottle of tequila so that the sex scene would be a little more bearable. Aside from her work on Wild Things, Campbell is perhaps best known for her role in the cult classic, Party of Five. Neve has also stated that she has a dry and sometimes offensive sense of humor, which may be why she agreed to do Wild Things in the first place.
11. Denise Richards – Wild Things
Actress Denise Richards is perhaps best known for her breakout role in Starship Troopers, which was released in 1997. The following year, she joined the cast of Wild Things, and was likely relieved when Neve Campbell showed up with booze the day they had to shoot the threesome scene with Matt Dillon. After Wild Things, Denise appeared in movies such as The World Is Not Enough, where she played a Bond girl, and Undercover Brother with comic Eddie Griffin. Richards is also well known for her marriage to Charlie Sheen, which ended in 2006.
10. John Leguizamo – Super Mario Brothers
Gamers around the world hated the fact that movie execs decided to make a movie out of the popular Mario Bros. game, in 1993. John Leguizamo’s co-star Bob Hoskins, even called the movie the “worst he’s ever made.” In 2006, John Leguizamo also admitted that he hated the movie in his autobiography. He also states that he and Hoskins pretty much knew Super Mario Bros. was going to be a disaster, so they got drunk on set just to get through the day. Leguizamo also broke Hoskin’s finger accidentally during a day of shooting when they were both pretty wasted.
9. Shia LaBeouf – Lawless
Shia LaBeouf sure has come a long way since he played a quirky little brother in the Disney sitcom Even Stevens. When LaBeouf starred in the movie Lawless, he wanted to make the role come to life by being as realistic as possible. The movie was based on a book called The Wettest County in the World, about three brothers who were successful bootleggers in Virginia during the Prohibition era. While filming the movie, Shia often drank moonshine to make sure he was “in character.” LaBeouf has also been to rehab and been arrested for his substance abuse issues, so it’s safe to say that he probably didn’t need that much character development.
8. Natalie Portman – Black Swan
The director of Black Swan, Darren Aronofsky, stated that stars Natalie Portman and Mila Kunis shared a bottle of tequila to calm their nerves before their sex scene in the movie. Kunis initially denied this, but someone else on the set also confirmed that Portman and Kunis had some alcohol before filming. Portman has not denied this, and has also talked about how intense the movie was, so that’s probably not the only scene in which she’s a little buzzed. Of course, it’s also way more fun for people to imagine the two actresses being drunk on the job, so the public is probably going to stick with the tequila story either way.
7. Mila Kunis – Black Swan
Even though Mila Kunis didn’t want to come across as unprofessional and admit that she and Natalie Portman had to down a few tequila shots before filming their sex scene in Black Swan, she’s pretty much quieted down about it now. Maybe that’s because the director and another movie staff member saw the tequila. Or, maybe it’s because Mila realized that the movie was still a great success and her career wasn’t in jeopardy. After getting drunk to get through the movie, the actress, who is known for her role in the hit sitcom That 70’s Show, and the movie Friends With Benefits, Kunis has settled into motherhood and is engaged to Ashton Kutcher. Mila Kunis is also the spokesperson for Jim Beam, which may be another reason people aren’t buying her Black Swan story.
6. Billy Bob Thornton – Bad Santa
Billy Bob Thornton has made it no secret that he enjoys a good drink (or three). So when he starred in Bad Santa, he felt it was necessary to get completely into character. Thornton stated that in order to play the character well, “you can’t go halfway drunk, you know?” He also stated that he “wasn’t sort of drunk.” Even though Bad Santa is a little vulgar to be considered a holiday classic, it did pretty well in the box office, and Thornton’s drunk scenes may have a lot to do with that. There’s even a Badder Santa that is only available on DVD. This version is unrated and contains Thornton’s drunk antics that weren’t allowed in the original film.
5. Daniel Radcliffe – Harry Potter
Daniel Radcliffe will always be known as Harry Potter, even though he’s worked on a number of other projects since then. Radcliffe did an interview in 2012, stating that he would often show up to set drunk. He’d been partying the night before, and would go to work intoxicated after spending the entire previous evening drinking. Daniel even admitted that he could point out the scenes where he was completely wasted because he was “dead behind the eyes.” Perhaps the pressure of being such a huge child star got to him, or maybe he just thought he was invincible, as many young people do. Radcliffe has since gone to rehab and seems to be doing quite well.
4. Anna Kendrick – Drinking Buddies
Drinking Buddies was pretty much an improvised movie with a basic plot. Anna Kendrick, one of the stars of the movie, was playing a drinking game on set with fake beer, but Jake Johnson, who played her fiance, switched it to the real thing, and hilarity ensued. Johnson actually pulled this prank on Kendrick halfway through an actual take, so before Kendrick realized what was actually happening, it was kind of too late. Luckily, Anna Kendrick is just as funny and charming sober as she is drunk, which is not an easy feat for most people. The scene actually ended up in the movie, and it was a pretty sweet moment.
3. Margot Robbie – The Wolf of Wall Street
Margot Robbie admits that she had some tequila so she’d be less nervous when shooting her nude scenes for The Wolf of Wall Street. After all, she was a new actress and was playing the wife of Leonardo DiCaprio, which likely made her a bit anxious (with reason). Even though those three shots of tequila likely made Robbie feel better, most people would agree that she didn’t have anything to be nervous about. However, we understand that being naked in front of a film crew isn’t the most comfortable thing in the world for most people. Due to the nature of the film and all the depictions of drinking and drug use, we wouldn’t be surprised if Margot Robbie wasn’t the only cast member drinking on set.
2. Brad Pitt – Fight Club
Most people don’t think of Brad Pitt as a drinker, but when he was filming Fight Club with Edward Norton, he admits that the two were drunk on set. Remember the scene when Pitt and Norton are hitting golf balls in the dark? This scene wasn’t originally in the script, but the cameras happened to be rolling when the actors wanted to see if they could hit the movie catering van with golf balls. Clearly, this is a “drunk” activity. David Fincher, the director, decided to keep the scene in the movie, and fed Pitt and Norton their lines to make the scene come together.
1. Martin Sheen – Apocalypse Now
There’s a memorable scene in Apocalypse Now where Martin Sheen is in a hotel room alone, drinking. During this scene, Sheen really is drunk. It’s also no secret that this movie took a toll on everyone involved. During the filming, the director, Francis Ford Coppola, lost 100 pounds and contemplated suicide. Martin Sheen even had a heart attack! After experiencing that level of stress, virtually anyone could be tempted to drink, although alcohol is probably a bad idea for people who are suicidal or have heart problems. The hotel scene was actually unscripted; Sheen got drunk and Coppola told the crew to capture the moment. Sheen punched a mirror and started crying when he cut himself. He also tried to attack Coppola off-camera and almost all of these “gems” ended up in the movie.
