With a cast in the hundreds, it’s hardly surprising that Game of Thrones has one of the largest densities of gorgeous, powerful women. In the World of Ice and Fire, looks come hand-in-hand with politics; soldiers follow beauty, nobles support the strong, and at the top of the food chain there’s always a sexy woman calling the shots.
Creator George R.R. Martin, and show runners D.B. Weiss and David Beinhoff, may get all the credit, but what about the casting department? I’d like to offer my own personal thanks. They’ve been responsible for discovering and presenting us with some of the most stunning unknown beauties in television. If it weren’t for them, the show may not have attracted the legions of adoring fans that have caused it to become a worldwide phenomenon.
With every passing season we are bombarded with new female characters, which makes the hotly debated issue of, “Who is the sexiest character?” much harder to answer. While it was impossible to include everybody, here are the 11 most attractive female characters in Game of Thrones.
WARNING! THIS ARTICLE CONTAINS SPOILERS!
English actress Roxanne Mckee, appeared in the first two seasons of Game of Thrones playing one of Daenerys Targaryen’s handmaidens. As a former bed slave, she was an expert in the art of lovemaking, which made her a favorite with Viserys — the self-proclaimed king of the Seven Kingdoms. Her skills in the brothels eventually landed her a role as Dany’s personal tutor after the Khaleesi expressed a desire to pleasure her husband, Khal Drogo. Unfortunately, her pretty face also landed her in the bed of the traitor Xao Xhoan Doxos, which resulted in an awful death: being locked away in the dark vaults of Quarth to starve.
10. Margaery Tyrell
Margaery Tyrell is the daughter of Lace Tyrell, ruler of Reach. Although she becomes the wife of Joffrey Baratheon after the Battle of Blackwater, her status as queen is cut rather short when Joffrey gets poisoned and meets his death at their wedding feast. Margaery is known for her ambition and beauty, but also has a sympathetic and understanding side to her character. She is played by English actress Natalie Dormer, who also stars in the CBS series Elementary, and played Cressida in The Hunger Games movies The Hunger Games: Mockingjay part one and two.
9. Cersei Lannister
Cersei Lannister may be the most evil, manipulative person in Westeros, but she’s so strikingly good looking, she even managed to win the physical affection of her own twin brother! As the Queen Regent, she is one of the most powerful players of the Game of Thrones; crossing her is like crossing the Devil himself. Although she finally got her comeuppance after four seasons of vindictive behavior by being forced to make a naked walk of shame through the streets of King’s Landing, seeing her beautiful golden locks get the snip was mildly disappointing. It’s hard to believe that actress Lena Headey, is in her 40s.
8. Talisa Stark
Played by Oona Chaplin — who is the granddaughter of the late Charlie Chaplin — Talisa Stark is an exotic beauty whose blunt personality attracted the King in the North, Robb Stark. Even though he was promised to another, he broke his vow to follow his heart, and so, they married in secret. His betrayal, however, would have devastating consequences. After a feast at Lord Frey’s castle, Robb and all of his men were butchered in an event now known as The Red Wedding. While dying of arrow wounds, he watched his wife and unborn child as they were stabbed to death in the Great Hall — sometimes misery is the price of true love.
7. Lady Melisandre
Portrayed by actress Carice Van Houten, the “Red Woman” is a master of manipulation, using the power of seduction as a weapon to control kings and armies all over Westeros. By simply whispering in his ear, she’s managed to control Stanis’s every move, from advising him to attack Blackwater Bay to birthing an assassin shadow-child; she even convinced him to burn alive his only daughter! But, not everyone is so quick to fall head-over-heels in her presence. The Onion Knight and Lady Melisandre never saw eye-to-eye and, while it was clearly a struggle, the honorable Jon Snow resisted temptation when she tried to seduce him in Castle Black.
When the wildling Ygritte is captured by Jon Snow, morality takes over, leaving him unable to execute her. Throughout the subsequent night, he succumbs to her seductive charm before being captured by her wildling people. In season three, Snow falls so deeply in love that he breaks his vows of celibacy and the two begin a relationship, which prompts other members of the tribe to run wild with jealousy. Ygritte is experienced, brave and knows how to fight, making her a good match for the young Lord Commander. With her red hair and an unyielding personality, Scottish-born actress Rose Leslie, suits the role perfectly.
In the very first episode of Game of Thrones, we were introduced to the beautiful Ros, while she was servicing Tyrion Lannister in a brothel outside Winterfell. Her good looks helped her attain a position working in an upper-class pleasure house in King’s Landing, under the guidance of Petyr “Littlefinger” Baelish. Before she was unexpectedly killed off in the third season, she had serviced half of the nobility in Westeros, including Theon Greyjoy, Grand Maester Pycelle, and even — kind of — Joffrey Baratheon. In the real world, actress Esme Bianco, is a neo-burlesque performer and model.
4. Sansa Stark
Over the years we’ve watched Sansa Stark undergo a huge transformation — perhaps more than any other character in Game of Thrones. The once ladylike teen who dreamed of marrying a handsome prince and living happily ever after is long gone. She saw her father’s beheading, was beaten by her betrothed, married a sexual assaulter and almost got thrown down a bottomless hole by her own flesh and blood. Now she’s taken on a new Gothic look to go with her fresh, strong willed personality. Actress Sophie Turner is now 19 years old and has grown into a very attractive young woman.
Being a former adult star, it was easy for Sibel Kekilli to convince us all that Shae was highly experienced in the bedroom; as the lover of Tyrion Lannister, she had to be. When Kekilli was initially offered the role, she turned it down, but the producers never let up and eventually she accepted. Of all the prostitutes in Game of Thrones — and there are a fair amount — Shae is without a doubt the most mysterious. Even to this day fans debate whether or not she truly loved Tyrion. Some suggest that she was after his money; this theory gathered even more momentum when Tyrion discovered that she was sleeping with his father.
2. Tyene Sand
“Am I not the most beautiful woman you’ve ever seen?” He may have been drugged and in dire need of her life saving antidote, but when the Dornish noble asked Bronn this question, how could he have answered to the contrary? Tyene Sand hasn’t been in Game of Thrones for long, but her seductive aura and magnificent battle prowess has already made her a firm fan favorite. Even after she almost took Bronn’s life, he remains infatuated with her. We can only hope that in later seasons they rekindle their near-romance, just so we can see more of her.
1. Daenerys Targaryen
No matter how many stunning women are written into Game of Thrones, Daenerys Targaryen will outshine them all. She is the Mother of Dragons, Queen of the Andals, and possibly the most just, yet harsh leader in the entire World of Ice and Fire. After her horse-lord husband passed away, suitors have been lining up — although she’s yet to choose a suitable candidate. But it’s not just beauty that Daenerys Targaryen has on her side; she also has a huge army, legions of loyal followers and, of course, three dragons. Since landing the role, actress Emilia Clarke has become a global sensation and one of the most sought after names in film and television.
