via youtube.com

You think you know, but you have no idea where these celebrities are coming from when it comes to drugs.

Just because they are socialites in Hollywood, doesn’t exactly mean they have done hardcore drugs or anything of the sort. By contrast, even the celebs you think would never get involved in some way with drugs may surprise you. Some of them have had a past and it might even scare you. Not only because of who they are and their good reputation, but because of the stories about them experimenting with drugs. It will shock you.

Another reason why it’s so shocking reading these confessions is because of their age. Some of these stars are so young that it’ll make you ask how can they have such experiences when they are still pretty much kids and just starting life? Or the fact that you hear about them all the time in the news and social media so you kind of know what they are up to. It leads you to wonder when they found the time to go through a  stage involving drugs? How did we miss that?

Of course, there are those celebs who don’t really shock us much at all about their involvement with drugs but their stories are still entertaining.

Below is a list of celebrity drug confessions that will make your jaws drop.

Michael Phelps is an American competition swimmer and Olympic gold medalist. He’s your typical athlete as he comes off as focused, driven and overall, wouldn’t have time to socialize nor have a personal life outside of his sport. In 2009 though, the 30-year-old swimmer was caught smoking a bong when photos surfaced on the internet. He later commented on his behavior in a statement saying, “I engaged in behavior which was regrettable and demonstrated bad judgment,” Phelps said. “I’m 23 years old and despite the successes I’ve had in the pool, I acted in a youthful and inappropriate way, not in a manner people have come to expect from me. For this, I am sorry.” With those record-breaking numbers and over-achievements, his bad boy behavior hasn’t come close to ruining his reputation.

Gossip Girl actress Leighton Meester has kept a good reputation throughout her career. But one can’t avoid the fact that she’s attractive and carries that “popular girl” vibe and as it turns out, our perception of her hasn’t been that far off from the truth. Meester opened up to the January 2011 issue of Allure magazine about her old partying days. “We had craaaazy parties, we had DJ’s, bands, an ice luge, a fire twirler,” she said. “I mean, drinking is one thing, over-drinking is another. And drugs are something that I do not tolerate at all. You’d be surprised how many people do it.” Oh we’re surprised. “If you go out and you’re living the nightlife scene, that’s what people do.”

9. Adam Levine

Earlier in his career, Maroon 5 frontman Adam Levine had his experience with drugs. The 36-year-old shared his experience with MSN. “We had a brief experience one time with what I guess was Ambien,” Levine said. “It was the first and last time we took this drug. But we were at Denny’s, at some shady part of the city of whatever part of the country we were in, and we took it and we ordered the food and we woke up at the table, what must have been an hour later.” Sounds like they had a good time. Ever since, no word on Levine experimenting with drugs has come out.

8. James Franco

If you follow actor James Franco on any social media outlet, you’re probably not that surprised to find The Interview star on this list. However, if you just know him as one of the usual handsome actors walking down the red carpet for an award show, then this might shock you. “I used to smoke weed, but I haven’t done it in a long time,” Franco told USA Today in August 2008. “Everybody, even now, thinks, ‘That guy is stoned.’ It’s just the way I talk, because I don’t smoke weed. Somehow, there’s something about me, the way I talk, that implies that I’m on drugs.” Funnily enough, he is right. Regardless if he still does or not it’s no wonder he can pull off acting gigs in drug-related films such as In The End and Pineapple Express. He has experience.

7. Drew Barrymore

Here’s one who we already knew had her troubles with drugs but when she spoke to 60 Minutes, it came out even more shocking than we expected it. Drew Barrymore admitted that she started using drugs at a young age. “I started smoking when I was nine,” she told the CBS news show. “I know it’s nuts. It was an extraordinary experience. I went through it, and I learned a lot. And I learned it in front of everyone which was righteously embarrassing. But you know what, it made me stronger.” The Never Been Kissed star has carried a good girl reputation throughout her career but she has also been open about her troubled upbringing and experience with drugs during her youth. Today, Drew is an award-winning actress, mother and wife and explains she’s never been happier.

6. Taylor Swift

In contrast, Taylor Swift is not the type to get herself involved in any type of drug-related situation. She told 60 Minutes in 2011 her take on the whole substance abuse topic- especially being in the Hollywood scene. “I have drunk, but I’m not a drinker,” she explained. “I don’t drink to get drunk because that’s not cute. And I don’t want to smoke anything because I sing!” Maybe this isn’t that shocking to hear from “Queen Swift” but considering the ones who have shocked us, it was safer to keep our minds open with this one. It looks like Taylor made some good choices considering how far they have taken her.

5. Demi Lovato

Mainstream singer Demi Lovato has been very open about her struggles with depression and an eating disorder. There’s no doubt that Demi is known for coming out stronger, especially being in the public eye at such a young age. The “Heart Attack” singer has made a name for herself as a positive role model for younger girls who commonly go through the same thing. However, she told Access Hollywood back in 2013 about her other struggles which included heavy drugs. “I couldn’t go 30 minutes to an hour without cocaine, and I would bring it on airplanes,” she told the news show. “I would smuggle it basically and just wait until everyone in first class would go to sleep, and I would do it right there.” We knew Demi went through a tough time but we didn’t know she really went all the way.

4. Amy Poehler

Funny girl Amy Poehler wasn’t shy in talking about her experience with cocaine and ecstasy. “I tried cocaine, which I instantly loved but eventually hated,” she wrote on her memoir, Yes Please, in 2014. “Cocaine is terrific if you want to hang out with people you don’t know very well and play ping-pong all night but it’s bad for almost everything else, the day after cocaine is rough.” The Parks and Recreation actress went along and mentioned how having her children, Archie and Abel, with her ex-husband also made her cut off drugs a little as well as her career. She continued, “I can’t perform, drive or write stoned, and therefore I smoke pot a lot less than I used to.”

3. Lena Dunham

Lena Dunham has been known for her quality acting in her hit show, Girls. She also has a reputation for being down to earth. With that being said, it’s not surprising that Lena didn’t have the best of luck trying out drugs- according to the actress herself when she admitted it in an interview. “I tried coke, but was a total failure,” Lena told The Guardian in a 2014 interview . “I snorted a little bit, then always sneezed. It was sadder than having not tried drugs, in that I tried drugs and failed at trying drugs.” In a weird way, it makes her come off as even more down to earth.

2. Tina Fey

Another shocking confession was from comedian and actress Tina Fey. Knowing that her best bud, Amy, had her experience with drugs, you would think same goes for Tina. Not exactly. While speaking to Women’s Health magazine back in 2007, she opened up about saying no to drugs. “I have had surgeries before when I’ve been unconscious, but I have never used any kind of recreational drug,” she told the publication. “I want to be on record saying this, so my daughter can see it one day in the future. I have never done any drugs! I am extremely square and obedient in nature.” Good for you Tina.

1. Leonardo DiCaprio

Another shocker in terms of staying away from drugs is Hollywood’s ultimate alpha-male, Leonardo DiCaprio, or so he claims. The Wolf of Wall Street actor spoke to the Los Angeles Times in February 2014 and explained how he never got peer pressured into doing drugs while being in the Hollywood industry, especially at such a young age. “Never done it,” DiCaprio confessed. “That’s because I saw this stuff literally every day when I was 3 or 4 years old. So Hollywood was a walk in the park for me.” It does make sense until we realize this is Leonardo DiCaprio we’re reading about- then it just doesn’t connect. If you say so, Leo.
