Being a parent is hard work. It’s pretty safe to admit that most people who have children don’t always know the best ways to properly nurture, comfort, or teach their little ones. Hey, we’re human at best, and most parents truly are doing the best they can. Unfortunately, there are some parents who either don’t try very hard, or stop trying at all.
Fathers often have a bad reputation when it comes to parenting. Even women whose significant others are active fathers sometimes complain that parenting responsibilities are not evenly distributed. There are a number of households in which mom is expected to cook, clean and raise good-mannered intelligent children, while dad is the “fun parent.” There are also families in which the father is the main disciplinarian, and his children learn to fear him. Then there are households in which kids aren’t sure how to react to their father, because they don’t see much of him.
Of course, every family is different, and some kids are fortunate enough to say they have great fathers who have always been a source of encouragement and safety for them. This scenario rings true for a number of celebrities. However, there are some celebs who are just as known for being bad dads as they are for their creative work. Here are 10 of the worst celebrity dads in Hollywood.
10. Alec Baldwin
Alec Baldwin is known for his work on the show 30 Rock, as well as a host of movies, and is the oldest of the Baldwin Brothers, who are all known for their acting. Alec Baldwin is also the ex-husband of actress Kim Basinger, and the two have a daughter together named Ireland. The divorce was a nasty one, and Alec made that even plainer when he left a terrible voicemail for his daughter. He referred to her as a “rude, thoughtless little pig.” He also informed her that she didn’t have the brains or decency to answer the phone when he called. This is definitely not the type of thing you say to your preteen daughter, or your adult daughter, for that matter. He has since apologized for the incident.
9. Hulk Hogan
Hulk Hogan is a veteran wrestler who was married to his wife Linda, for over 20 years. The Hogan family even had a reality show called Hogan Knows Best for a time, and it looked as though they were a loving family—with a few quirks, of course. In more recent years, it seems that Hogan’s relationship with his daughter Brooke is a little weird (to say the least). He once Tweeted a picture of himself rubbing sunblock on his daughter’s legs (gross). Then he Tweeted another picture of Brooke wearing a short skirt and encouraged his social media followers to check out her legs. Many would agree that nothing about this sounds healthy or normal.
8. Charlie Sheen
Charlie Sheen is known for so many things: acting, drinking, doing drugs, entertaining lots of prostitutes and insulting Hollywood executives. Unfortunately, being a great father is not on the list. Sheen has two daughters with actor Denise Richards, and twin boys with Brooke Mueller. When Mueller went to rehab in 2011, Charlie had custody of his sons. Instead of hiring a nanny to care for the boys when he went on acting jobs, he had two of his favorite “goddesses” (his pet name for his prostitutes) take care of the boys for him. Wow. He also had some issues with fulfilling his parent role in his daughters’ lives, but is reportedly trying to improve his relationship with his girls.
7. Eddie Murphy
Eddie Murphy has eight children. He had two children from previous relationships in the early 1990s, then he married model Nicole Murphy, and the pair had five children together. After he and Nicole divorced, he had a relationship with former Spice Girl Mel B. When Mel B became pregnant with their daughter Angel, Murphy was quick to say that he wasn’t sure the child was his. Initially, he denied that he was the father, and demanded to get a DNA test. Even after the test confirmed his paternity, Murphy took years to develop a relationship with his youngest child. Mel B has stated publicly that she’s very displeased with this, and has questioned Murphy’s character concerning his actions toward his child. Sad, indeed.
6. David Hasselhoff
The original male Baywatch babe and star of Knight Rider, has long been known for showing way more chest hair than we want to see. He’s also known for failing to be a model dad. David Hasselhoff has long had a problem with alcohol, and this was made public in 2007, when a video of him trying to communicate while in a drunken stupor was released. This can’t be a great example for children. His daughter was heard in the background of the video clip, begging him to stop drinking. David Hasselhoff stated that he asked his daughter to record him while drunk, because he wanted to see how bad his behavior was while intoxicated. He has also been admitted to the hospital several times after going on drinking binges, but his reps have denied this.
5. Jude Law
The handsome baby-faced actor has been making ladies swoon for years. Maybe it’s a combination of his boyish charm and British accent. However, Jude Law could use a little help in the fatherhood department. Jude Law has three children with Sadie Frost. He also has a child with model Samantha Burke. The pregnancy happened due to a one-night stand the two shared. However, it seems that he doesn’t claim the child he had with Burke. When Jude was on an episode of The Late Show With David Letterman, he stated that he only had three children. This was after his fourth child was born. Jude Law is definitely not in the running for “Dad of The Year”.
4. Michael Lohan
According to Lindsay Lohan’s mother Dina, Michael Lohan (Lindsay’s father) is the cause of all Lindsay’s problems. Apparently Lindsay witnessed Michael being abusive to Dina in their household. This likely caused a lot of the anxiety and mental confusion that led to Lindsay’s frequent trips to rehab. Of course, Lindsay Lohan hasn’t exactly been very lucky in the romance department either, and her relationships include a pretty volatile one with deejay Samantha Ronson. Michael Lohan also hasn’t done much to change his behavior, it seems. He’s in a relationship with Kate Major now, and there have been reports of domestic violence in this romance as well.
3. Mathew Knowles
Mathew Knowles rose to fame as the manager of Destiny’s Child. When the girls went on to pursue solo careers, he managed the individual projects of Beyonce, Kelly Rowland and Michelle Williams. Knowles also had a business relationship with his younger daughter Solange, and she was set to take over his management company. Unfortunately, Matthew Knowles is also known for cheating on his wife Tina (Beyonce and Solange’s mother) and fathering a son with his mistress. According to the child’s mother, Matthew has very little to do with his son and even refuses to pay child support. There are also reports that Beyonce and Solange have very little to do with their father because of what he did to their family.
2. Ryan O’Neal
Ryan O’Neal is a veteran actor whose daughter Tatum, is also an actress. The two have even starred together in some projects. A number of issues caused the father-daughter pair to become distant over time, and Tatum expressed her hurt, anger and confusion about their relationship in a book about her life. Ryan O’Neal is also known for his long-term romance with Farrah Fawcett. The two were together for decades, and when Fawcett passed away from cancer, it’s safe to say that O’Neal was not in his right mind. He was so out of it, in fact, that when Tatum showed up to the funeral, he tried to hit on her! He hadn’t seen his daughter in a while and didn’t recognize her. What a shame. He admitted the incident to Vanity Fair and called himself a “hopeless father.” He took the words right out of our mouths.
1. Woody Allen
Woody Allen may be legendary when it comes to writing, directing and acting, but he’s the worst at parenting. He was named “a treasure of the cinema” by Roger Ebert, but his fathering skills could certainly use some work. Allen was once romantically linked to Diane Keaton, and the two still had a working relationship after the breakup, since he still cast her to star in some of his films. He later began a relationship with Mia Farrow. The couple was together for 12 years and lived in separate homes. A 1991 article in The New York Times even praised Allen for his parenting and stated that he was very present in his children’s lives.
The following year, Woody Allen and Mia Farrow separated after Farrow found some nude pictures that Allen had taken of their adopted daughter, Soon-Yi, who was about 20 years old when the photos were taken. Allen admitted to the relationship and called it one “one of the greatest pieces of luck” in his life.
Woody Allen and Soon-Yi have been married since 1997.
