By now, we all know Alicia Vikander as the beauty who won the Best Supporting Actress award at the most awkward Academy Awards of all time. However, there is so much more to this fresh faced beauty besides her recent win. Vikander has only been in the business for a few short years, yet she has managed to catch the eye of some of the world’s top directors. Do not be fooled by the actress; she may look glamorous but she is as down to earth as they come. Her humble beginnings started with a small role on a well known Swedish soap opera but she has since sky rocketed to fame by being an actress who works hard for her roles, one that goes above and beyond to give a stellar performance. The 27 year old did not take the traditional path to fame as she had many bumps along the road starting as a dancer, then attempting law school and finally ending up here; an Academy Award winning actress who has films lined up that are guaranteed successes.
Vikander likes to keep her life private but one can now assume that this will be hard seeing as she is geared up to be one of the most sought after actresses (at least for the next few years). If you have not already done so, you better jump on the bandwagon so you can be one of those people that brag about being a fan before she was queen of the world. Here are a few nuggets to throw around when you decide to brag.
10. She Is A Trained Ballerina
Hollywood’s new IT girl has an amazing figure and that may be due to the fact that she is a classically trained ballerina. She studied ballet for nine years at the Royal Swedish Ballet School but was forced to give up her dreams after suffering several dance injuries mostly to her feet and back. She moved on to another creative outlet; acting. She started with a few small roles on TV shows and quickly found out that she loved being in front of the camera. During an interview with The Telegraph, she stated that she had a strong passion for acting that went beyond what she felt for dance.
9. Her Mom Is An Actress Too
Vikander’s mother also loves the spotlight! While her father is a psychiatrist, her mother is a stage actress by the name of Maria Fahl Vikander who has appeared in a few TV shows and short films. She really shines on stage, with productions of Twelfth Night, Miss Julie and Romeo and Juliet under her belt, we are sure she taught Alicia a thing or two about taking acting head on. Besides inheriting the acting gene from her mother, she also inherited her beautiful face. Seriously, Alicia possesses the spitting image of her mother’s beauty AND talent runs in this family. What a lucky girl.
8. Disappearing Act
Alicia has gone under the radar for quite some time; before getting her big Oscar winning role in The Danish Girl (2015), Vikander was in a total of 4 films in 2015 and some pretty popular films before that. In 2012 she appeared in Anna Karenina alongside Keira Knighty and in 2015 she appeared in The Man from U.N.C.L.E., Ex Machina (alongside the great Oscar Issac) and she even appeared in Burnt alongside Bradley Cooper. There is more to come as she is the main girl in the new highly anticipated Jason Bourne series. Hopefully she realizes that she will no longer be able to fly under the radar.
7. She Hasn’t Sized Up Her Competition
Vikander admitted during an interview with Vulture Magazine that she actually had not seen a lot of the Oscar films that she was contending with. She stated that her favorite film this season was 45 Years with Charlotte Rampling but then admitted to not seeing many other films. Could her choice be by default? Vikander must have been way too busy to sit down and watch all those films anyway. Then again she could have done a quick binge watch like every movie lover is prone to doing. Let’s give her the benefit of the doubt here, she has had a busy couple of months.
6. Dream Team
Like a true movie buff, Vikander has a dream team of three directors she would love to work with; Lars Von Trier, Quentin Tarantino and Terrence Malick. She would definitely fit the bill in these directors’ films, Lars Von Trier’s films for sure. Hell, she could have played the role of Mrs. O’Brien in the 2011 film Tree of Life (not that Jessica Chastain did not do a great job). The point is she has the look, and after seeing The Danish Girl she definitely has the acting chops. What a dream team she has picked for herself, and now that she has sent those vibes out to the universe let’s see what comes from it.
5. She Moved Out At 15
It is an understatement to say that Vikander has sacrificed a lot for her career; at 15 she was able to move out on her own to attend a ballet school in Stockholm, and she had a role in Les Sylphides that had no words. She also played a miming unisex role as a witch in a production, and ultimately this role was what made her realize that she could maybe try her hand at this acting thing one day. It was not until about 10 years later that she actually took the idea seriously and started putting everything into her craft, but it looks like it is paying off.
4. She Almost Went To Law School
Everyone needs a backup plan, and Vikander’s was law school. In between auditions and phasing ballet out of her life, Vikander contemplated law school but one would say that faith intervened, when she was able to secure an agent and it looked like casting directors were taking an interest in this young woman with a great olive skin tone. Clearly she did not get far in her studies but just imagine how distracting being in court would be with a lawyer who looks like that. You would never be able to make a proper conviction without thinking of the possibilities of what could happen if you swung a case her way.
3. She Is Dedicated
When she nabbed her role as Caroline in A Royal Affair (2012), she found out that she had to learn how to speak Dutch. The kicker was she only had two months to learn the language which is said to be a bit complicated. Luckily one of her mother’s friends was a native speaker so she asked if she could record her reading the whole script so she too could memorize the lines. She stated that she practiced relentlessly to sound as natural as possible. Her effort paid off because the director was so impressed with her persistence and loyalty to the role of Caroline.
2. She Is Not Social Media Savvy
Vikander may have to brush up on her social media skills or better yet, she may be able to hire someone to do all her Tweeting, posting and following for her. The actress told The Guardian in an exclusive interview that she is not a huge fan of social media. In fact, she is weary of it, as she stated; “I tried it once for two weeks but I felt this constant pressure to post. I was so stressed.” If she is cracking under social media pressure she will definitely need a great PR team to get her through the whirlwind that is ahead of her rapidly climbing career.
1. It Is Official
Alicia Vikander is officially Hollywood’s new IT girl. Since winning her Oscar she has been blogged about relentlessly and there seems to be no end in sight. People are smitten with her and want to know as much as possible about the Swedish born actress. Truth is, that up until this point Vikander has been a pretty private human being, however rumor has it that she is in a pretty serious relationship with Michael Fassbender who is also popular in his own right. She should start getting used to that IT girl status. It may be sticking with her longer than she thinks.
