Whether it’s in the wrestling ring or on the red carpet, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson continues to captivate us and has done so for the past twenty years. A professional wrestling legacy, he has become so much more than his squared circle persona.
Dwayne Douglas Johnson was born on May 2, 1972, in Hayward, California, to Rocky and Ata Johnson. He became a football star in high school and was awarded a full scholarship to play for the prestigious University of Miami. As part of the 1991 championship Hurricanes, he then played professionally for the Canadian Football League for a few years before being cut in 1996.
Deciding to give the family business a try, he joined the World Wrestling Federation. His Rock persona took wrestling by storm! By 2000, he was tapped to host Saturday Night Live. It was his first foray into acting outside the wrestling ring. That appearance not only showcased his muscles, but his acting skills and comedic timing. He seemed destined for greater things!
Dwayne Johnson continues to be an electrifying personality, both in and outside of the ring. His films are huge box office draws and his periodic returns to professional wrestling are always fan-favorites. The man is an entertainment juggernaut and he cannot be stopped. Maybe that’s why we love him so much. Maybe it’s that he seems to remain so humble in the face of so much success. Possibly, but whatever the reasons, we just can’t seem to get enough of him. What follows are my top ten reasons for why I believe we love Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson.
10. He Isn’t Afraid To Show His Soft Side
To celebrate his young daughter Jasmine’s four month birthday, Dwayne took to Instagram to share a beautiful photo of the proud father and his daughter. He wrote, “I’m always asked – what inspires you? My answer’s easy and honest… what inspires me the most is always waitin’ for me to walk thru my front door when I come home. Happy 4 month birthday Jasmine! One day you’ll know just how happy, proud, lucky and blessed you, your sister and your mama make me. You’ll also thank me one day for your toughness and your mama’s everything else.” He’s even shared some of his relationship with his older daughter, Simone, with us while appearing on an episode of Oprah’s Master Class, shedding a tear when describing his relationship with her.
9. He Is Incredibly Generous
He has made it no secret how much he reveres his mother who has always been there for him. As a token of his love and appreciation, Dwayne bought his mother a new Cadillac. His generosity doesn’t stop there. He has purchased cars for other people as well. In May 2013, he gave his cousin, Tamina Snuka a new Lexus SUV. In January 2014, he gave his long-time housekeeper a new Ford Edge. Then, for Christmas 2015, he gifted a brand new, fully-decked out Ford truck to his Uncle Tonga, as a way of saying thank you for helping him get his start in wrestling all those years ago.
8. He Loves His Family And Isn’t Afraid To Show It
Like many celebrities, Dwayne usually likes to keep his family life private. However, occasionally he’ll go to Twitter or Instagram and let us glimpse just how much he loves his family. In 2015, he became a father for the second time by girlfriend Lauren Hashian when she gave birth to their daughter, Jasmine. Within a few days the proud father shared the first pic of his newborn on Instagram, the message reading, “Christmas came early! Within minutes of being born she was laying on daddy’s chest.” Then for Valentine’s Day, he uploaded a video of himself feeding Jasmine. That same year, when his daughter, Simone, graduated junior high, he Instagrammed a beautiful congratulatory message, hashtagged, “#RegardlessOfHowOldYouGet #IWillAlwaysGrabAndKissYouInPublic.”
7. He Can Still Lay The Smackdown On A Candy Ass Jibroni When Needed
For Dwayne, wrestling is a family affair. As The Rock, he is a third-generation wrestler. His father, Rocky Johnson, and maternal grandfather, Peter Maivia, both were career wrestlers. He has won 17 championships during his time with the WWF and WWE, having gotten in the ring with some of the best. After winning the national championship with the University of Miami’s 1991 Hurricanes football team, Dwayne played briefly in the Canadian Football League. He was cut in 1996, and made the fateful decision to join the WWF. That legacy will always be with him. In 2012, he returned to WrestleMania to face-off against John Cena in the main event, defeating him and proving he still has it!
6. He Is A Real Kick-Ass Movie Star!
We first saw Dwayne on-screen during the prologue to 2001’s The Mummy Returns. While it was a small part, it led to his first leading role in the spin-off, The Scorpion King (2002). For this role he earned a record $5.5 million, the largest salary ever paid to an actor for his first starring role. Since then, he’s never looked back, joining the Fast & Furious and G.I. Joe franchises, which dominated the box office in 2013. That year, Forbes Magazine named Dwayne Johnson the top-grossing actor, with his films bringing in $1.3 billion worldwide! He’s only widened his appeal by venturing also into more kid-friendly films, like The Tooth Fairy, The Game Plan, and the upcoming remake of Jumanji.
5. He Genuinely Loves His Fans
If you’ve even been lucky enough to meet him at a premiere or an event, you know how genuinely pleased Dwayne is to come across the street and say hello and take as many pictures as time allows. He often personally responds to fans on Twitter, during #RockTalk, and then sometimes when a fan really just needs an encouraging word. While filming the upcoming Baywatch, he took time out of his schedule to meet with a young special-needs boy named Ryan. He shared the meeting in a photo on Instagram, which he often does when he meets fans.
4. He’s Incredibly Funny!
We know Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson can do action! But he’s not on shy to take on comedy roles too. His new film has him paired up with comedian Kevin Hart in Central Intelligence, which looks to be a roller coaster ride of action, laughs, explosions and more laughs! He can play funny! Did you see him in Be Cool (2005), or The Other Guys (2010)? His quick wit and charming personality belies his imposing physique. Even when he’s not necessarily trying to be funny (seen him in The Tooth Fairy?), we can’t help but laugh knowing that he’s in on the joke as well. That’s just one more part of what makes him great!
3. He Frickin’ Trained Wolverine!
That’s right! It’s no secret that Hugh Jackman, known for his ripped character Wolverine in the X-Men films, and Dwayne Johnson are bros. Being a man-mountain of pure muscle, who else would Jackman go to for tips on how to get shredded? One day, Jackman called up his friend, “He said, ‘Okay, you want to put on 25 pounds of lean muscle? You need six months. You need to eat 6,000 calories and here it is.’” In between fitness tips, Jackman recalled one funny tidbit, “Right as he’s telling me the whole diet, someone knocked on his trailer door – and I’ll never forget this moment. He goes, ‘Hold on a second! I’m talking to Wolverine! You can tell them I said they can wait.'”
2. Unlike So Many Others, His Instagrams Of Food Are Actually Really Interesting
Instagram is full of people just posting photos of their food; their lunch; their dinner; their diet. It’s absolutely boring. No one cares! But if you’re a follower of Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, then it’s a treat whenever he posts his meals! When he eats, he does it up right! When he posts his cheat days, it’s monumental! Giant stacks of pancakes, mountains of brownies, trays of donuts, and a whole assortment of large pizzas! It’s incredible to behold – and even more incredible to believe he eats it all by himself! His regular training diet is pretty big as well, consisting of egg whites, filet mignon, chicken, fish, oatmeal, broccoli, asparagus, a baked potato, and a salad, all measured and weighed of course.
1. He Totally Owns Throwback Thursday!
Never one to shy away from self-deprecating humor, Dwayne is known for posting some classic throwback photos on social media; photos that showcase his great 1990s style! Like the now-famous one of him from 1997, wearing the black turtleneck complete with exterior gold chain and sporting his fancy fanny pack. He captioned that piece of nostalgia with, “fanny pack and lean take it to a whole other level.. #90sRock #WTF #BuffLesbian.” Nice! He’s posted some others of his teen years and college days, but with that one turtleneck, fanny pack photo, he now officially owns Throwback Thursday! He is definitely the jabroni beatin’, pie eatin’, highflying, electrifying, elbow droppin’, spine poppin’, eyebrow-raising people champ, now and always!
