Reality TV has had a major impact on the state of TV in the United States and beyond since its introduction. Presumably starting with 1992’s The Real World on MTV. Reality TV exploded from there until we got to where we are today. Now, there are entire channels devoted to reality TV, it just feels impossible to flip through the channels without coming across several of them airing at any given time.
Reality TV has given us even more than that, though. It’s given generations the hope of love and the ability to feel the sting of high profile celebrity breakups, with several well-known power couples springing out of reality TV shows. In some cases, two people meet on a reality TV and go on to fall in love and be together, such as on Big Brother or The Real World. In some cases, entire reality shows are built around them and their relationship, as in the case of The Osbournes or The Newlyweds.
Regardless of how they met and came to be known to the world at large, the world is obsessed with these reality power couples. Here are some of what we think are the best reality TV power couples that took the world by storm.
10. Heidi Montag and Spencer Pratt
Originally from MTV’s The Hills, they were often called “Speidi” by their fans at the time. They were named the 3rd most popular couple in the world by USA Today in 2009. It’s pretty difficult to have owned a TV at any point during the airing of The Hills and not have heard about them. You’d probably have to be actually trying to avoid them. But perhaps America actually has more fun hating on them than anything else. But Heidi and Spencer don’t care. They just go and point to all their successes and say you could never hope to have even a fraction of what they have. Perhaps that’s why people hate on them so much. Regardless, they are a force in the universe, and they are back on reality TV this year on Marriage Boot Camp.
9. Flavor Flav and Brigitte Nielsen
Of course, everyone remembers Flavor Flav from back in the good ‘ol days of Public Enemy. But perhaps he’s actually become even more famous since then. Most well-known to today’s young generation as that crazy guy who goes around wearing a giant clock, Flavor Flav is still a popular name. Nielsen herself is no slouch, as she has starred in some great movies like Red Sonja. Originally falling for each other gradually on season 3 of The Surreal Life, they later had their own VH1 reality show titled Strange Love. If nothing else, it’s at least amusing to see the tiny Flav try to hold his own next to the giant that is his lover Brigitte.
8. Lisa Vanderpump and Ken Todd
Featured on The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills, Lisa and Ken have been married for over 30 years. Ken is an ex-soccer star, and Lisa has become vastly successful as a restauranteur, author and actress. She is now valued at over $65 million. They also have their own spin-off reality show under their belt, appropriately titled Vanderpump Rules. Although their marriage was originally a whirlwind affair, having only known each other for six weeks before tying the knot, they have managed to stand the test of time. They renewed their wedding vows on the season 3 finale of Real Housewives. It goes to show, sometimes you just know this is the person you will be with for the rest of your life.
7. Jeff Schroeder and Jordan Lloyd
Originally meeting and falling in love during Big Brother season 11, and then featured again on season 13, as well as The Amazing Race season 16, this couple is touted by many as reality TV’s perfect couple. Through all the trials and tribulations they’ve been put through on reality TV, they’ve never really publicly exposed any major faults in their relationship. They just seem to be, well, perfect. The whole world looks up to Jeff and Jordan as what a couple should be, and hopefully they will go the distance. Because if they don’t, I’d bet a great many people are going to lose faith in love.
6. Kourtney Kardashian and Scott Disick
Okay, everyone is familiar with this couple by now, right? Love them or hate them, the Kardashians and their reality show Keeping up with the Kardashians, have taken the world by storm. And one of the couples at the center of all the madness that always seems to stay together despite all the hardships and current separation is Kourtney and Scott. They’ve had their ups and downs throughout the many years of the show, but they always seem to end up back together.
5. Ice T and Coco Austin
This couple became famous through their reality TV series Ice Loves Coco, in which Ice showed, well, how much he loves Coco. But this couple has actually been married for over a decade. After watching their show, many people learned exactly why. Despite their various quirks, they show just how much they truly adore each other, perhaps even more because of their individual faults. And that goes and sets a great example for today’s youth as well. These days, you can see Ice-T over on Law and Order SVU and still showing in his personal life that monogamy is the way to go.
4. Nick Lachey and Jessica Simpson
This is one couple that seemingly came out of nowhere but blew up throughout the world of entertainment. Perhaps it was just because they looked so darn cute together. Who knows? It’s undeniable that The Newlywed couple was charming, though. It was a little bit off-putting how the show seemed to play on Jessica’s naïve personality to perpetuate the “dumb blonde” stereotype, however. It was perhaps partially that which led to Nick and Jessica’s divorce in 2005, just months after the show finished airing. The world was chomping at the bit for details, but sadly none really emerged. It was speculated in the media as differences leading to them growing apart, but no one really knows exactly what the circumstances were.
3. Khloe Kardashian and Lamar Odom
The coming together of the reality star and the pro basketball player didn’t convince many at first, but the world was quickly won over by the charm of this power couple. Their relationship was so noteworthy, that it even spawned its own Kardashian spin-off show titled Khloe and Lamar. It was a shame when they announced their divorce amidst Odom seemingly spiraling out of control in ways Khloe couldn’t handle. But there is hope for the future! There seems to be some rekindling of the old flames amidst Odom’s tragic accident that landed him in the hospital with Khloe by his side, looking after her former husband.
2. Ozzy and Sharon Osbourne
The Osbournes was one of the most popular and successful reality shows of its era. Following around iconic former rocker Ozzy, his wife Sharon, and their children, the show was immensely funny and charming. Perhaps best remembered these days for Ozzy’s iconic shouting of “SHARON!” whenever he needed her attention, it was always worth a laugh (and still is). But more than that, Ozzy and Sharon have been married since 1982 in a marriage that has truly stood the test of time and rock and roll. After The Osbournes, Sharon went on to take the reality world by the horns, starring in such shows as The X Factor (UK), America’s Got Talent and The Talk.
1. Kim Kardashian and Kanye West
Perhaps the most recognizable celebrity couple of the moment, Kim and Kanye are so hot that even people who hate reality TV know of them. You can’t avoid hearing about them. They have come a long way since they started dating back in Spring of 2012. They had their first child, a girl, in 2013 and were married last year in 2014. Now, they just had baby number two. So North West will have a baby brother to play with. We wouldn’t be surprised if there comes a spin-off of the Kimye’s with Kim, Kanye and the two kids. I am sure the world would tune in to see that.
