It’s pretty common to hear about an ex child star becoming an out of control alcoholic. It has happened to Lindsay Lohan, Shia Lebeouf, Amanda Bynes and countless others. Many of them claim it’s the pressure of growing up on set that eventually pushed these stars over the limits. Who could blame them? They lose out on a normal childhood because these kids were raised on set and knew nothing other than the Hollywood life. Most of these stars had a say in their career choice and they are some of the lucky few who actually made it big, but of course the path to stardom comes with a price.
However, some of these celebrities might have chosen to become actors; others had no other choice. Some like Shia Lebeouf say they went into acting to help support their family and they were the main source of income their family had. Others like Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen had no say whatsoever on the matter. The two were just infants and they were already signed into a TV contract for years. For these cases, the child was forced to live a life they had no control over and as a result grew resentful from it.
The worst case scenario in some of these instances is that the parents were more managers to their kids than they were parents. Some of them pushed their kid into Hollywood so that they would not have to work; they were perfectly fine using their child as a source of income. This resulted in the child becoming resentful towards their parents and, in many cases, some went as far as to legally emancipate themselves from their parents. Other children sued their parents and are extremely open about their lack of relationship with them. Below is a list of parents who exploited their children in the name of fame.
10. Teri Shields/Brooke Shields – Photographed Naked At 10
At the very young age of 10, Brooke Shields was photographed completely naked by photographer Gary Gross for the magazine Little Woman. The photo was taken with the consent of her mother Teri Shields and was later published on Sugar n Spice, a Playboy publication. Why a mother would agree to have a her 10-year-old photographed in such a manner is something only “momagers” would understand. Brooke Shields started modeling at 11 months old and played a prostitute at the age of 12. She grew up extremely fast and that’s all due to her mom pushing her towards a career she did not know she wanted.
9. Kit Culkin – Macaulay Culkin’s “Father From Hell”
Is Kit Culkin the “Father from Hell?” Apparently his children and ex-wife think so. Kit Culkin is notorious in Hollywood as an overbearing manager who pushed his family into acting. Everyone remembers Macaulay Culkin from Home Alone. He became an instant star and millionaire shortly after the release of the movie. Culkin and his family remained relevant six years after the movie premiered when news about a custody battle of the child star broke out. His mom Patricia Brenrup and Kit Culkin were fighting over the right to manage their son’s career. Macaulay Culkin spoke in court on behalf of his mother. He was a minor at the time when he filed a petition to withdraw $17 million from his personal account to provide for his family. The whole family became estranged from Kit and it was said that all the Culkin kids referred to him as Stinky. There were also reports of the family being a nightmare to work with during the set of The Good Son.
8. Melanie Sloan/Scarlett Johansson – The 10% Mother
Melanie Sloan started managing Scarlett Johansson‘s career since she first started acting. Johansson started acting at the age of 9. Sloan was receiving 10% of her daughter’s earnings. The two seemed to have kept a great relationship despite Johansson being the bread winner of the family.
The two did, however, disagree with how the money should be spent. In 2009, Scarlett fired her mom as she believed her expenses needed to be cut down. Shortly after she was fired, Melanie decided against buying a $1.4 million house, presumably because she could not afford it. It’s obvious she was a little too reliant on her daughter.
7. Krista Stodden – 16-Year-Old Daughter Marries 50-Year-Old
Some people might recognize the name Krista Kay Keller Stodden as the woman who agreed to marry off her 16-year-old to a 50-year-old man. Courtney Stodden is a singer and model. She was on Miss Teen Washington USA in 2010. She and her mother Krista were at the center of a media controversy when it came to light that the-then 16-year-old Krista would be marrying 50-year-old Doug Hutchison. There was heavy criticism surrounding the marriage and many people were calling Hutchison a predator. Some people were questioning Keller’s parenting for allowing her daughter to marry a guy that is 4 years older than her own dad. Krista remained Courtney’s manager up until the spring of 2015, and although the two seem to maintain a healthy relationship, Krista’s parenting skills are still questionable.
6. The Carters – The Boss Mother
Jane Carter is the mother of Aaron and Nick Carter, but the three do not have the best relationship in Hollywood. Jane and her ex-husband Bob Carter were the managers for both their sons up until 2003 where Aaron sued his mom claiming she had stolen $100,000. The boys eventually became estranged from their mother saying she was more of a boss than a mother figure. In an interview with 20/20, Nick Carter said that they were “starved for that attention, of a motherly figure.” At home the boys’ relationship with their three sisters was just as strained. According to Bob Carter, the girls would refer to Nick and Aaron as cash cows and how Jane only liked the cash cows. Although Jane has made claims of sacrificing everything she had for the sake of the boys, it’s evident that the only thing she really sacrificed was her relationship with her sons.
5. Crystal Workman – Ariel Winter (AKA Alex Dunphy)
Most people might recognize Ariel Winter as Alex Dunphy from the hit TV show Modern Family, but the teen has been acting long before she landed the role. Her mother and manager Crystal Workman has been taking Ariel to acting auditions since she was a child. In 2012, the Modern Family star filed for legal emancipation from her mother due to claims that she was physically and emotionally abusive. The actress moved out of her mother’s house and into her sister’s who also made the same claims against her mother. Although dragging Ariel from audition to audition helped the teen achieve her dream, it damaged their mother-daughter relationship. It does not seem as if the two ever had a good relationship as Winter has said her mom would constantly ridicule her.
4. The Lohans -The Unstable Home
In 2005, Lindsay Lohan released the single, “Confessions of a Broken Heart” also known as “Daughter to Father.” The song was written as a letter by Lohan to her father Michael Lohan about his alcoholism. The music video was directed by Lindsay herself and her little sister Ali Lohan was the star. The video shows a young girl, which is supposed to be Ali, getting home to her dad who is seen yelling at her mom after ballet class. Lindsay said she hoped her dad would see the positive side of the video and realize that she loves him. Lindsay is another child star whose life slowly derailed due to the pressure of being a Hollywood star.
In an interview with the New York Daily News in 2013, Dina Lohan said that she believed that Lindsay’s upbringing was the reason why the young actress was such a train wreck. “Lindsay saw her dad abuse me – that’s why she’s so screwed up,” she said. Lindsay had an unstable home and being in the limelight did not help her.
3. Joe Jackson/The Jackson Children – Just Call Me Joe
The entire world knows about the Jackson family. The showbiz family has been around since the 1960’s when The Jackson Five was first established and the world was graced with their talent. However the pressures of managing such a well-known family came at a price. Joe Jackson, the father, was known as being extremely strict with his kids and was definitely more manager than he was a dad. The late Michael Jackson always dreamed of the childhood he lost out on and tried to relive it during his adulthood. Michael Jackson let the world know what it was like to be a part of the famous family and how Joe ruled the family with an iron fist. He and his siblings were born to be entertainers and a means to an income for their father. The Jackson kids did not know what it was like to be kids who had fun and made mistakes. At home it was all about business with some reports suggesting he instructed his children to call him Joe, not Dad. The lack of relationship between Joe and his children is evident now that Joe is living a quiet and lonely life in his Las Vegas condo.
2. Jaid And Drew Barrymore – Introduced To The Night Life At 8
It might surprise some people to learn that the cute little girl from E.T had an alcohol and drug problem just a few years after the movie had premiered. Drew Barrymore had her first sip of alcohol at the age of 9, was chain smoking cigarettes by 9 and half, was smoking pot by 10 and finally snorting cocaine at 12. By the time the actress was 14, she had been in rehab twice and had an extremely rocky relationship with her mother. Barrymore has stated in the past that she would drink to get drunk in order to escape the pressures of being a high-profile celebrity.
Where was momma Barrymore throughout all of this? Apparently by her side, Jaid started taking Drew to parties and nightclubs when she was only 8 years old exposing her to that lifestyle. Jaid was an aspiring actress who never got the break she needed to make it big but instead used her daughter to gain that fame.
Drew became legally emancipated from her mother by the time she turned 15, stating that the two could not be in each other’s lives. Although Jaid might claim that she sacrificed her own career for her daughter’s, it’s pretty obvious that childhood stardom was not Drew’s dream. She pushed her daughter into doing something she wanted for herself and in turn made her an alcoholic. The two have never been able to recover their relationship but Drew continues to support her mother financially.
1. Kris Jenner – Worst Mother Ever?
Kris Jenner is a prime example of what it is to be a manager before a mother. Having had her family’s dirty laundry air out on television for over the last 8 years, the Kardashians have become Hollywood’s most famous family. Kylie and Kendall Jenner were not even teenagers when the series began to film. The two girls grew up on set, which is common for child stars. The sisters have grown up in front of millions of people, and most of their lives is public knowledge. Having to go through puberty is awkward enough, but being on a reality TV show while it’s happening must be a nightmare.
Kris should have taken upon herself to try to protect her daughters’ personal lives as much as possible, but instead she signed a contract agreeing to expose it all. Kylie and Kendall are adults now. Kendall has since dropped her last name and has attempted to distance herself from Keeping up With the Kardashians, but Kylie has become the media’s main focus. Kendall has stated that her last name has damaged the prospects of her own modeling career, while Kylie has been called a mini-Kim.
