10. Miley Helps Homeless Youth
Miley Cyrus isn’t exactly known as a political activist, but during the 2014 MTV VMAs, she sent a homeless teenager, who she also brought as a date, up on stage to accept her best video award and make a speech to bring attention to the plight of homeless teenagers. But the craziness didn’t end there. It turned out that Miley’s date, Jesse Helt, was wanted by police for probation violation in Oregon. With all the backlash, Miley reacted on social media saying, “While the media obsesses over one homeless man’s legal issue, let’s help the other 1.6 million homeless youth.” Ms. Cyrus is most certainly right, because more shocking than her stunt, is the number of homeless youth in America.
9. Marlon Brando Rejects His Oscar In A Big Way
In the first awards show stunt in history, to protest Hollywood’s treatment of American Indians in film and television, actor Marlon Brando sent up American Indian, Sacheen Littlefeather to decline the Oscar he won, for his performance in, The Godfather. Quite surprised, some of the crowd reacted with cheers and others with “boos.” Littlefeather was only up on stage for one minute, but Brando actually gave her a 15-page speech that she was supposed to read. When a producer got wind of what was happening, he told Littlefeather she would be arrested if she stayed on stage for more than 60 seconds. Littlefeather later read her speech backstage to the press.
8. Kanye Loves Beyoncé
Party-crashing is the norm in Hollywood, but crashing someone’s award show acceptance speech is a whole other story. At the 2009 MTV VMAs, rapper Kanye West wasn’t happy his friend Beyoncé, didn’t win the Best Female Video Award. Instead of acting normal or sending her flowers, Kanye stormed the stage, grabbed the mic from Taylor Swift, who won the award and proclaimed, “I’m sorry, but Beyoncé had one of the best videos of all time.” Of course Beyoncé was horrified and poor Taylor Swift was shocked. Swift then went on to perform live, shortly after that bizarre moment and as usual, killed it. West later apologized for being a jerk.
7. Anna Nicole Smith’s “Beautiful Duet”
Rarely do we hear of anything eventful happening at the Billboard Music Awards, but Anna Nicole Smith had an infamous one we just can’t forget about. While introducing rapper Kanye West, she came out, clearly intoxicated, asking the audience if they liked her body. She had recently lost weight using a pill called Trimspa. In all fairness, she was wearing a low cut dress, so the audience probably did like her body. Smith then began to slur her words, and rambled something about West making her “beautiful duets, ” just before she started screaming about how Kanye was a “freaking genius.” The moment was tragically unforgettable, as Smith died a few years later and was even parodied on the television show, MadTV.
6. South Park On Acid
Before the 2000 Academy Awards, South Park creator, Trey Parker was nominated in the Best Song category for “Blame Canada,” from Southpark: Bigger, Longer and UnCut. He brought his co-creator, Matt Stone as his date. So, what did they wear? Trey wore a version of Gwyneth Paltrow’s pink Ralph Lauren dress from the previous year, and Matt wore a dress similar to Jennifer Lopez’s infamous low cut Gucci gown. In recent years, the duo recently admitted, to work up the courage for this shenanigan, they dropped acid shortly before hitting the red carpet. Unfortunately, “Blame Canada” did not win the award for Best Song.
5. Sacha Baron Cohen Dictates The Oscars
In 2012, Sacha Baron Cohen went to the Academy Awards as ‘The Dictator’, from his namesake movie. Paramount Pictures describes the movie as “the heroic story of a North African dictator who risked his life to ensure that democracy would never come to the country he so lovingly oppressed.” Carrying what he said were the ashes of the late North Korean dictator, Kim Jong-Il, Cohen told Ryan Seacrest in an interview, that the late Jong-Il’s dying wish was “to be sprinkled over the red carpet and over Halle Berry’s chest”. While that didn’t happen, at least Cohen got to promote his film.
4. Meat Lady Gaga
In 2012, Lady Gaga wore a dress made of meat, accessorized by a meat hat and meat booties on her feet, to the MTV VMAs, which was designed by Franc Fernandez and styled by Nicola Formichetti. So, why was meat the new black? Gaga said she wanted to make a statement about the importance of fighting for what one believes in, as well as her opposition to the, “don’t ask-don’t-tell” policy of the military. The dress is currently displayed in the Rock and Roll Hall of fame, preserved as a type of jerky.
3. A Sexy Kiss
During the trio’s performance of “Hollywood,” at the 2003 MTV VMAs, Madonna and Britney Spears started to smooch, then Christina Aguilera joined in. But before her part of the smooch was caught on camera, the action cut away to Justin Timberlake’s (Timberlake and Spears were an item at the time) reaction. The moment was hot, sexy and shocking, but certainly not remembered accurately.
2. Britney Gives Us Less
Another notable Britney Spears moment wasn’t nearly as sexy as her kiss with Madonna and Christina Aguilera. In 2007, Spears was supposed to give us more performing her single, “Gimme More,” and unfortunately, she gave us a whole lot less. Looking a little lost, Britney forgot some the lyrics and didn’t keep up with beat while dancing. In short, she was a hot mess who phoned it in. Furthermore, she wasn’t wearing the most flattering outfit. Having clearly put on a few pounds, even Britney later said, “I looked like a fat pig.”
1. The Twerk Heard Around The World
It was the twerk heard around the world. During 2012, MTV VMAs, Miley, wearing a teddy bear costume, let us know she was all grown up during her performance with Robin Thicke. Miley performed her song, “We Can’t Stop,” but she didn’t stop there. Robin Thicke was on stage performing his hit, “Blurred Lines,” when Miley decided to blur some lines of her own. Miley danced around the stage, “twerking,” and bent over and shook her butt and waved a foam finger at the very much married Thicke. This twerk was not as innocent as it appeared to be, because by 2014, the marriage between Thicke and his wife Paula Patton- well, stopped.
