Being part of a celebrity couple is not without its challenges. While it’s likely lots of fun to pose on the red carpet with your significant other and take lavish vacations, you’d also have to deal with the paparazzi following you. The tabloids may also print false or partially true stories about you and your mate, and you’ll likely be asked about these stories during interviews.
Even though celebrity romances are often riddled with gossip, there are times when one (or both) people in the relationship mess up in one way or another. People make mistakes, because nobody’s perfect and that includes celebrities. These are usually the times when celebrities wish that the public and the media would just leave them alone for a while and let them work through their relationship issues.
Then again, there are also some celebrities who welcome the attention. After all, public approval or interest is a big part of stardom. This means that if people aren’t paying attention to you, you’re probably not doing well when it comes to your music, movies or television shows. There are some celebrities who understand this principle, but tend to take it too far with their attention-getting schemes, which can be pretty annoying. Here are 10 of the most attention-thirsty celeb couples.
10. Michael Sam and Vito Cammisano
Michael Sam is known for being the first openly gay player to be drafted to the NFL. Before going pro, he revealed to his teammates that he was gay when he played football at the University of Missouri. Sam was also featured on a season of Dancing With The Stars, where he told the story of his troubled childhood and his struggles to come to terms with his sexuality. We discovered that Sam and his fiance Vito Cammisano, definitely don’t mind giving the public a glimpse into their relationship. After all, they planted some pretty serious kisses on each other on a news broadcast when Sam found out he would be playing in the NFL. Sam also posted a picture of him proposing to Cammisano on Twitter, which obviously means the couple wants everyone to know about their love.
9. Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds
OK, to be fair, both Reynolds and Lively have been in serious relationships with people they used to work with. So, it’s no surprise they want to be a little more private in their relationship with each other, at least in the beginning. But the pair have now been married for a few years and have a baby girl together. It took a while for Blake to confirm that she was pregnant, and for weeks after the baby was born, the couple didn’t reveal the little girl’s name (it’s James). The media was also hard-pressed to get a photo of baby James, since Lively and Reynolds only posted cryptic photos of the child’s feet or images of them holding little James with her back to the camera. Celebrities know that the public is fascinated with famous babies, so they often ride this attention-seeking train as long as they can. Since having their daughter, Reynolds has stated that he’s never loved his wife more. How sweet! This was also effective in getting the public’s attention.
8. Jennifer Aniston and Justin Theroux
Yes, after all this time, people are still talking about what a jerk Brad Pitt was for leaving Jennifer Aniston and getting into a relationship with Angelina Jolie. While Aniston doesn’t discuss it much anymore, she’s likely using this nonstop celeb buzz to get the public more interested in her relationship with actor and director Justin Theroux. The two have been engaged for a few years now, and there’s often a tabloid magazine or two that claims the two have gotten married in a secret ceremony. This, of course, keeps everyone interested in the relationship, which leads some to believe that this engagement is nothing more than a long-standing publicity stunt. Aniston is very coy about her relationship with Justin during interviews, which only makes the public want to know more. Jennifer Aniston has stated that Theroux is talented and great at all of his creative pursuits. She then added that he’s a beautiful person. Looks like she admires him more for his work than his role in their relationship. Interesting.
7. Neil Patrick Harris and David Burtka
When Harris isn’t planting a smooch on his husband David Burtka’s cheek at awards shows, he’s likely hosting the award show. Neil Patrick Harris has hosted the Tony Awards three times, the Primetime Emmy Awards twice, and was the first openly gay man to serve as the host of the Academy Awards. Burtka and Harris are both actors, which is probably why they don’t mind putting their love on display. They filmed a special with Oprah Winfrey for the OWN Network, and discussed the challenges of raising twins while trying to maintain their relationship. Harris also allowed rumors to swirl around his sexuality for two years before he finally confirmed that he was gay and dating Burtka.
6. Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt
Pitt and Jolie aren’t known for inappropriate public displays of affection. This means that they know the public will go crazy any time they touch each other in public. They’ve been seen embracing slightly and smiling at one another on the red carpet, and Pitt kissed Jolie on the cheek during a tribute to her at an awards show. Nicely played. They do just enough to keep people wanting more, which makes them appear that they don’t want the attention. Not to mention, they’re both really hot and they have lots of children (biological and adopted), so that makes them pretty interesting as well.
5. Mila Kunis and Ashton Kutcher
Remember when Kutcher and Kunis were co-stars on That 70’s Show? According to a few rumors, the two didn’t care for each other much when they worked together, even though they played on again, off again love interests. Years later, they got together in real life, after both being in relationships with other celebs (Kutcher was married to Demi Moore, and Kunis was in a long-term relationship with Macaulay Culkin). Mila Kunis and Ashton Kutcher don’t talk about their relationship much, but they are often strategically seen in public with one another. It seems to be pretty easy for photographers to get a glimpse of Mila’s engagement ring, and the two recently welcomed a baby girl together. There are now speculations that they got married recently in a private ceremony. It seems that the way to get the most attention in Hollywood is to pretend that you just want to “live your life like a normal person.” Kunis did state that Kutcher was a great partner during her pregnancy in an interview on Ellen, which gave fans just enough of a sweet glimpse into the life of the couple.
4. Ellen DeGeneres and Portia de Rossi
Actresses Ellen DeGeneres and Portia de Rossi have been together for quite some time, and Ellen (who is also a successful comedienne and talk show host) mentions their relationship “casually” on her show from time to time. Perhaps DeGeneres is madly in love and wants everyone to share in her happiness. Maybe she wants to bring more attention to gay rights. Perhaps these are both her motives. The two rarely do interviews, but de Rossi did say that Ellen has changed the way she thinks about life and has given her new self-confidence. So, if these two are trying to get the type of attention that is thought-provoking and void of outrageous stories, this may be the way to do it.
3. Justin Timberlake and Jessica Biel
Timberlake and Biel had an on again, off again relationship for years before finally deciding to tie the knot. While they probably didn’t go through these changes in their relationship simply for media attention, they had to know it was going to get the public talking. A few months after they got married, there were rumors that there was trouble in paradise, since the two weren’t seen together at many public events. This is just another way that celebrities stay relevant in the minds of the public. Jessica and Justin recently had a baby boy, and when Timberlake accepted an award a few months ago, he mentioned his wife and called her his “greatest collaborator.” He then promised he’d be home to change diapers and get his “swaddle on.” Cute.
2. Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner
Fellow actors Jennifer Garner and Ben Affleck were known for complimenting each other during interviews. Affleck called Garner his “everything” while accepting an award, and referred to her as the “best woman ever” while she looked on lovingly. These kind words weren’t enough to keep the couple together, though. They recently announced they were divorcing, the day after their 10th anniversary. If that’s not attention-getting, then we don’t know what is. This was clearly planned, and while we’re pretty sure the divorce is real, they still made the decision to announce their separation in a way that was going to drum up lots of celebrity buzz.
1. Kim Kardashian and Kanye West
Are you really surprised by this one? Kanye West is almost as well-known for saying outlandish things at inappropriate times, as he is for his rap and production career. He also started a fashion line, but we’re guessing that was just for attention, because the clothes leave a lot to be desired. Kim Kardashian is pretty much the Queen of Getting Attention, so when these two decided to tie the knot, the public shouldn’t have expected anything less than media overkill. The two have had some pretty sweet moments though. There was that time when Kim told all her social media followers that Kanye was a great father. West also said that Kardashian, along with their daughter North, has made him a better human being. So, even if you hated them before, the Wests have once again garnered your attention by being sweet and somewhat normal. You’re welcome.
