Let’s be honest: there aren’t too many female comic book characters that aren’t hot. That’s right: the comic book industry is basically supported by big boobs and voluptuous backsides (after all, sex sells – especially in the comic book industry). It is surprising then, that these ladies haven’t always been the stars of the show.
Comic book characters didn’t actually start being drawn super sexily until the 80s – think big boobs and big bottoms (which you probably already were!). Combine this with the fact that they barely had any clothing on and were drawn in sexually suggestive poses, you’ve created the pinnacle of fantasy. Men were also sexified though, with muscles and broad shoulders for days.
Female comic book characters have always been controversial, much as women often are. Either they were too sexy or too unrealistic or they were victims of violence. They weren’t always seen as equals and they were stereotypical. You get the idea. Thanks to all the real-life female superheroes in the 70s who pushed for women to be more represented, a lot of super-heroines and super-villains started making their way onto the comic book scene. And, in the past few years, female comic book characters have been able to be just as heroic as their male counterparts. In celebration of female comic book characters who are just as powerful as men, here is a list of those who are both powerful and hot.
Let’s just put it out there – Marvel’s Mystique is a curvy and exotic beauty with her blue skin and yellow eyes. She is also a mutant, a class of humans with superhuman abilities and has also mainly been a supervillain. Her powers include shapeshifting and being able to change her voice into that of another person. Mystique is actually over 100 years old, but because she can rearrange her cells, she can stay young forever. Her skimpy outfits and using her sexuality to her advantage make her a hot character indeed. Jennifer Lawrence most recently portrayed Mystique on the big screen in 2014’s X-Men: Days of Future Past. She will reprise the role again in the sequel, X-Men: Apocalypse, scheduled for release in May of 2016.
9. The Scarlet Witch
Another Marvel hottie is The Scarlet Witch, also known as Wanda Maximoff, who first appeared back in the early 60s. Originally, she was depicted as a mutant with the ability to alter reality. Her reality-altering power eventually became so strong that she could create entire armies out of thin air. Scarlet Witch made it to the 14th place on Comic Buyer’s Guide’s “100 Sexist Women in Comics” list. Elizabeth Olsen has most recently portrayed The Scarlet Witch in 2015’s Avengers: Age of Ultron and will appear again in Captain America: Civil War to be released on April 29, 2016.
Starfire is one alien with a lot of sex appeal. Take one look at her outfit (which is basically no outfit at all) and you will see why she has made it on the list. DC’s Starfire is actually the name of several different characters in the DC Comics collection of characters. Nevertheless, she landed in the 20th spot in the “100 Sexiest Women in Comics” list. Her power is being able to absorb ultraviolet radiation, which allows her to fly at ridiculous speeds. This same power gives her superhuman strength and invulnerability. What makes her so hot? Take a look at her and you tell us (also, she has awesome fighting skills).
Zatanna is a cult favourite in the comic book world. To the delight of many, she oozes sex appeal with her fishnet stockings, knee-high boots and magician’s hat. She was ranked fourth on Comic Buyer’s Guide’s “100 Sexiest Women in Comics” list. Many fellow comic book characters would agree, as she has had a variety of romantic relationships, including one with the Flash. DC’s Comics Zatanna, is a magician whose powers are, of course, magic. What makes her so hot? She is one of the most powerful sorcerers as far as DC Comics goes. The woman also has curves in all the right places.
6. Black Canary
One of DC’s earliest female superheroes (her first appearance was in 1947), Black Canary made it to 26th place on Comics Buyer’s Guide’s “100 Sexiest Women in Comics” list. She is a vigilante and is considered one of DC Comic’s top martial artists. Originally, she didn’t have any superpowers. Now however, she can create sonic vibrations (called the “Canary Cry”) which destroys whatever is in her path. What makes Black Canary so hot? Her calculated mind and her fighting skills, although her fishnet stockings might also have something to do with it. Consult Green Arrow for more, since he married the girl.
5. Red Sonja
With Red Ronja coming in at first place on Comics Buyer’s Guides “100 Sexist Women in Comics” list, it was only necessary to include her on this list as well. Marvel has done it again. What makes Red Sonja so hot? The girl knows how to handle a sword (ahem, she is a warrior, after all). Her body is in peak condition, which is probably why her armor includes a bikini and knee-high boots. It was this exact bikini armor that made her popular to begin with. There is no doubt that fans would love to see her make it to the big screen. Unfortunately, it’s been thirty years since Red Sonja has done so. But the time may come soon as the script is reportedly being worked on as we speak. Various actresses have been considered for the part, including Megan Fox, but no one is currently attached to the project except for the screenwriter.
4. The Black Widow
Marvel’s The Black Widow, also known as Natasha Romanova, is one of the greatest Russian spies. She was originally an antagonist to Iron Man before she left for the United States, becoming a spy for S.H.I.E.L.D. and a member of the Avengers. Her powers include resistance to both aging and disease due to the fact that she is equipped with biotechnology. She has two bracelets that can deliver “the widow’s bite,” which sends out electrostatic bolts, tear gas and can transmit radio signals. What makes her one of the hottest comic book characters? Her intellect, which some have said is a gift. She also has a pretty hot body due to her status as a world class athlete. Scarlett Johnansson has most recently taken on the role in 2015’s Avengers: Age of Ultron and will also appear in Captain America: Civil War, to be released in early 2016.
Marvel’s Storm, is a mutant whose powers include controlling the weather and the ability to fly, which happens when she creates wind storms that are strong enough to carry her through the air. Storm is historically significant because she is one of the first black comic book characters to make an appearance in a well-known comic book. Interestingly, one of her most defining characteristics is her white hair, which originally encountered some resistance because publishers thought it would make her look old. What makes her so hot? First of all, she is one of the most powerful mutants out there and her love does not discriminate – she has been romantically linked with both men and women. She is clearly the object of many men’s desires, including Wolverine and Dracula. She has been portrayed on screen by Halle Balle.
2. Emma Frost
One of the comic book industry’s most popular characters, this blonde bombshell mutant, also known as The White Queen, first made her appearance in the 80s. She is highly sexualized in comic books, which is one of her most recognizable traits (along with her tendency to be antagonistic). She was once a supervillain and enemy of the X-Men before eventually becoming a superhero and one of their main members. Her power happens to be telepathy (she can also telepathically sedate victims) and the ability to turn her skin and hair into diamonds, which makes her indestructible. What makes Emma Frost hot? The girl is smart. She even has multiple degrees. She also uses her sexuality to her advantage and is not oppressed by it. Her dry wit is unparalleled. We don’t need to mention her bombshell good looks. January Jones (Betty Draper from Mad Men) most recently immortalized Emma Frost on the big screen in 2011’s X Men: First Class.
1. Wonder Women
DC Comic’s Wonder Woman, is a warrior princess. One of the most popular female comic book characters dating back to the 40s. She has a ton of superpowers (super strength, speed, stamina, reflexes, agility, flight – we could go on), top of the line combat skills and a ton of weapons. Who wouldn’t want a tiara that you can throw at people if necessary? One of her more interesting superpowers is empathy, which gives her a lot of insight. What makes her hot? She is a feminist, fighting for justice, love, peace and gender equality. Not only that, but while her personality tends to change depending on the writer, one thing that has stayed the same is the fact that she offers loves and compassion without discrimination. Not to mention she has an incredible body given that she is an amazing athlete. Her skimpy swimsuit costume also probably contributes to her hotness (we assume…). In general, Wonder Woman has it all. Gal Gadot is set to take on the role of Wonder Woman in the first feature film starring this superheroine in 70 years. She will make her debut in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice in March 2016.
