Ending a friendship is never easy, but it’s even more complicated for celebrities who have to deal with the drama going worldwide. From the small fights to the cringe-worthy moments, here are 10 of Hollywood’s most-talked about friendship fights and breakups.
Paris Hilton and Nicole Richie
Paris Hilton and Nicole Richie‘s friendship breakup hit the media faster than you can say “That’s hot.” The former BFF’s, who filmed the popular reality TV show, “The Simple Life” together, ended their friendship in 2005. The media had a frenzy with this news and soon, rumours were flying about what really happened. Hilton stirred up more confusion when she told reporters, “I will not go into the details of what happened. All I will say is that Nicole knows what she did, and that’s all I am ever going to say about it.”
So, why the sudden change of heart? It was reported that Richie showed the Hilton heiress’s sex tape during a party. While they haven’t been photographed together in years, the most recent shot of them was photographed in December 2013 at an Art Basel international art show. Hilton reposted the picture on Instagram with the caption “Miami Nights with @DerekBlasberg & @NicoleRichie. #OldFriends #GoodTimes.”
Selena Gomez and Demi Lovato
They got their start in the limelight together when they appeared on several episodes of “Barney” during the seventh and eighth seasons. However, the pair recently admitted that they drifted apart for a while due to a ‘rough patch’ that occurred when Lovato entered rehab in 2010 for an eating disorder and self-harm issues.
Coincidentally, it was these issues and Lovato’s ability to be open with her fans that caused Gomez to reach out to her former best friend. In an interview with Seventeen Magazine, she revealed that, “She was going through things and I was so young and it was confusing,” she told the magazine. “I processed it saying, ‘OK, I don’t understand what she’s going through so I’m just going to do this.’ I don’t think it was fair, and I’m so happy that I have her back in my life now.”
Miley Cyrus and Katy Perry
Katy Perry kissed a girl and apparently, she didn’t like it. During the twerking-singer’s Bangerz concert at the Staples Centre in Los Angeles, the two singers shared a brief kiss, but Perry later revealed on the morning show, “Sunrise” in Sydney, Australia that she was not into it. “I just walked up to her to give her a friendly girly kiss. You know as us girls do. And then she like tried to move her head and go deeper and I pulled away. God knows where that tongue has been!”
Never one to back down from celebrity criticism, Cyrus took to Twitter to fire back at the “Dark Horse” singer, saying: “Girl if ur worried abt where tongues have been good thing ur ex boo is ur EX BOO cause we ALL know where THAT [tongue emoji] been,” she tweeted on March 6.
Perry responded back (somewhat) lightly with, “@MileyCyrus Oooo gurrrl I’m gonna give you the BIGGEST spanking when I see you in the UK bb!”
Lady Gaga and Perez Hilton
Social media has been a dangerous weapon in the fights between former close friends, Lady Gaga and Perez Hilton. The drama began after fans spotted the celebrity blogger inside of Gaga’s New York City apartment building. The pop diva, who was in L.A. at the time, grew panicked by this, causing her to call security and ask fans to snap pictures of Hilton. “STAY AWAY FROM ME + MY FAMILY YOU ARE SICK TRYING TO RENT AN APARTMENT IN MY BUILDING TO STALK ME. LEAVE ME ALONE!!!” she tweeted.
Hilton took to his blog to defend himself and express the betrayal, saying “After a day of innocent house-hunting, I am devastated and my heart hurts that my former very good friend, a person I used to call my ‘wifey’ and traveled the world with, is making very public and very untrue allegations about me on Twitter.” Months later, the feud is still ongoing.
Lauren Conrad and Heidi Montag
While the popular reality show, “The Hills” was full of drama, nothing caused more of a stir than the friendship breakup between Lauren Conrad and Heidi Montag. The two were inseparable at the beginning of the show, but after Montag entered into a relationship with her now-husband, Spencer Pratt, things began to crumble. The final straw came after rumours flew that the couple spread rumours about Conrad having a sex tape with her ex-boyfriend, Jason Wahler.
Despite attending the couple’s televised wedding, Conrad later revealed that she no longer speaks to her former best friend.
Rihanna and Katy Perry
The two mega-star singers, who are always sitting together during award shows, reportedly suffered a rift in their friendship when Rihanna allowed former boyfriend, Chris Brown back into her life, despite the advice from friends and family to stay away. The “Dark Horse” singer, who does not approve of the relationship, reportedly voiced her opinions telling Elle U.K “It’s really unfortunate but you can’t save these people. My days of celebrity saving are over.”
More recently, an insider revealed that Perry is ‘disgusted’ with Rihanna over the friendship that she shares with Perry’s recent ex, John Mayer. The “Monster” singer was spotted with Mayer at Soho House in Los Angeles in mid-April. The insider said, “Katy’s disgusted with her and is fed up with being hurt. This year is all about making tough choices that are best for her in the long run, even in they’re painful. It’s the last time she’ll let Rihanna hurt her.”
Miley Cyrus and Demi Lovato
Indications of a feud between the two former Disney stars began in 2008 when Cyrus and her friend, Many Jiroux, posted a video on YouTube, poking fun at the videos that Lovato and Selena Gomez often posted as a way to connect with their fans. Despite saying that they were simply imitating Gomez and Lovato, fans still thought that it was mean. Cyrus later removed the video and told fans, “If we offended them we’re super-sorry. They were being funny on their show and Elvis says imitation is the greatest form of flattery, so we were imitating them.”
Flash-forward to 2014, and Cyrus, who was feeling particularly nostalgic, posted a picture of herself and the “Neon Lights” singer on Twitter, with the caption, “Now this is what true friendship looks like. None of that hollywood crap. @ddlovato I miss you = ]”
Unfortunately, this gesture didn’t receive exactly the warmest response as Lovato, although denying it was about Cyrus, later tweeted, “It’s just kind of hard to miss somebody that I don’t know anymore.”
Heather Locklear and Denise Richards
Betrayal played a huge factor in the friendship breakup between the two blonde bombshells, Heather Locklear and Denise Richards. Locklear had divorced her rocker husband, Richie Sambora, after finding racy photographs from his personal assistant, but she was in for an even greater betrayal when Richards, her former best friend, began dating Sambora, just three months after her own divorce to Charlie Sheen.
Richards later set the record straight in an interview with Redbook magazine, where she revealed that the two of them ended the friendship months before she even dated Sambora. “I don’t want to say what caused the split, but she and I weren’t even speaking then. It wasn’t ever like we’d be shopping and go back to her house and I’d flirt with her husband. Yes, I got together with Heather’s soon-to-be ex-husband, but no, I didn’t have an affair with him.”
Gwyneth Paltrow and Winona Ryder
They were one of Hollywood’s closest duos, but things took a turn for the worst when Ryder believed that Paltrow stole her role in “Shakespeare in Love” after finding the script and convincing producers to cast her instead. To add more salt to that wound, Paltrow went on to win an Oscar for her role in the film.
Paltrow may have gotten the last laugh, though when Ryder was arrested for shoplifting in 2001. She took to her website, Goop, to write a post that hinted towards it being about her former best friend. “Back in the day, I had a ‘frenemy’ who, as it turned out, was pretty hellbent on taking me down,” she wrote. “I restrained myself from fighting back. I tried to take the high road. But one day I heard that something unfortunate and humiliating had happened to this person. And my reaction was deep relief and happiness.”
Kim Kardashian and Paris Hilton
Before Kim Kardashian quickly rose to fame, she was hitting up Hollywood’s party scene with fellow socialite, Paris Hilton. However, as she grew more famous, so did the jealousy from the Hilton heiress.
Tensions hit an all-time high in 2007 when Paris was interviewed by a radio host in Las Vegas, saying, “I would not want [Kim’s butt] — it’s gross! It reminds me of cottage cheese inside a big trash bag.”
Despite not speaking for years, Hilton still expressed her happiness after finding out that Kardashian was expecting her first child.
