When it comes to amazing superhero teams, the X-Men are as talented as any other group. Even if you think you have figured out how to properly take out one of their team members, there is no guarantee that the rest of them are not going to come back swinging with even more firepower.
While this can seem like a great thing, it also would have posed a serious problem for the franchise if they were not able to create villains that were strong enough to truly challenge the X-Men. Thankfully, Marvel succeeded, and as strong as the X-Men are, the villains are every bit as cool (if not cooler). Like the good guys, the variety of powers that go into the villains helps make them stand out as equal, if not better, than any villain other superheroes have to face.
Some of these villains have appeared on the big screen, and some even in roles that paint them as heroes. Yet, if you look at the history of the comic book character, there is no doubting that everyone on this list wanted to inflict some serious harm on the X-Men at one point or another.
While there are always going to be more villains emerging that could take a spot on this list, I still don’t think you’ll find a more powerful group of ten evil people than the 10 individuals listed below. Also keep in mind that with X-Men: Apocalypse scheduled to come out later this year, you better believe that people are about to get a lot more familiar with one of the most powerful villains of all time. Does he make my list? I guess you’ll just have to keep reading to find out. But, also, of course he made my list.
10. Emma Frost
When fans saw Emma Frost in the latest X-Men movies, it was clear that she was not someone to mess with. As a recognized longstanding member of the Hellfire Club, and an alternative name of The White Queen, you know she means business. When it comes to the different types of powers, one of the most effective is always going to be powers that are centered around the mind. Emma is no stranger to this, as she possess telepathy, mind control, memory alteration and can also induce paralysis in her opponents due to the level of mind-penetration that she inflicts. The real unique power of Emma comes from the fact that she is also able to shapeshift into a solid diamond, which greatly boosts many of her attributes that would be valuable in any battle, such as speed and strength. While she has not always been seen as a villain, there are definitely moments where Frost gets under the skin of the X-Men.
While I am not sure how Jennifer Lawrence would do in a fight, I definitely would not bet against Mystique. When it comes to fighting someone, one of the strongest advantages that you can have is knowing what it is you are up against. What do you do when you go up against a shapeshifter who can literally turn into anyone? While Mystique’s powers may have more practicality for getting around less combative problems such as getting security clearance by impersonating an officer, there is still no doubting her ability to lay the smack down when it matters. Plus, are there really any powers out there that you would rather have in real life other than hers?
If you consider that the X-Men have a mutant who has the ability to control ice, it only seems natural that the villains have a character who could control fire. Pyro may not be able to physically manifest fire, the way Bobby can with ice, but he can control the fire’s duration, intensity, and overall size of the fire. You put a lighter in his hand and watch out! It is important to also remember that Pyro needs to be mentally focusing on the fire creation in order to keep it lasting, so he may not fare so well against someone like Xavier who can tap into his mind. That being said, fire is both awesome and deadly so having control over it can definitely land you on the list of the 10 biggest villains of the X-Men.
When it comes to beating the Blob, one glance is enough to know that you aren’t going to physically manhandle him. On top of being one of the physically largest villains out there, he’s also not afraid to use his size. While he may not have the most fancy of powers, there is something to be said about someone who can absorb your punch and refer to it as a tickle. Also, good luck moving him if he decides that he wants to stay standing where he is. While you may also look at him and think he is slow, be careful because his speed and athleticism are on par with a fairly athletically in-shape male, which is going to make it all the scarier when he is running at you.
When it comes to knocking off Wolverine, nobody may have tried more times than Sabretooth. The character has traits similar to Wolverine, including claws, anger, general strength and an unbelievable healing factor, which has even given him an eye back. Unlike Wolverine, he never had Xavier to help straighten him out. As a result, Victor Creed grew up to be a vicious assassin, but Creed has also been known to kill people just for the sake of pleasure. Similar to Wolverine, Creed also ages at an incredibly slow rate so you better believe this villain is going to be around for a long time.
He isn’t nicknamed “The Unstoppable Juggernaut” because they thought it would be ironic. While it is easy to look at Juggernaut and be blown away by his sheer size, you also need to take into account the character’s momentum because it absolutely is a power. When moving, especially quickly, there aren’t many individuals that have the ability to stop or even slow down the Juggernaut. His sheer size also makes him incredibly durable and his outfit helps shield him from mental attacks. Sure, you may think he’s strong and just move on, but make sure you realize just how strong. We’re talking the kind of power that can lift up buildings and throw them at people. Plus, in the movies he’s yelled out, “I’m the Juggernaut, bitch!” That’s pretty badass and easily gets him a few points.
Quicksilver is far from being all bad, but he’s too cool of a character to not mention when you consider that he has been evil. It is the personality of Quicksilver which has resulted in him acting as both hero and villain multiple times during his life. There is no doubt you want him on your side though. If you’ve seen the movies then you know he has the power of super speed, which also impacts his ability to think at super speeds. There was even a period in his comic book life where he was exposed to mystic Terrigen Mists, increasing his power and allowing him to literally run faster than time.
3. Scarlet Witch
Like Emma Frost and Quicksilver, Scarlet Witch is far from being all bad. This is proven further by the fact that her character joined the Avengers in the latest film. Yet, given that Scarlet Witch is related to Magneto, is it really shocking to know that she also has an evil side? Watch out because Wanda has the ability to literally warp reality. On top of that power, which is too strong to even try and explain, Wanda can teleport and has control over chaos magic which she can use to inflict some damage. She can also create hexes which help defy the laws of probability in her favor, so even if she may not be the most powerful warrior on the battlefield, you can believe she’ll be the luckiest!
While Magneto is not always at odds with the X-Men, there have certainly been enough occasions to help solidify him as the second most powerful villain. While his power, being able to manipulate magnets, seems simple, it really does have long lasting implications of power. Magneto has been shown to create magnetic force fields, and then use his control over magnets to help him fly. A charismatic leader, Magneto has also helped lead the Brotherhood of Evil into countless battles. Granted, when you reject the idea of humans and mutants living peacefully side-by-side, you are going to come into moments where you need to show off your strength, especially when these views go against Charles Xavier, who is one of the most powerful X-Men in his own right.
There is no shortage of power when it comes to Apocalypse. The X-Men may be powerful, but Apocalypse is essentially immortal. With access to special “regeneration” chambers, Apocalypse is able to heal himself. The character also has complete control over all the molecules in his body, so he has the ability to alter his body image at will. This also makes him incredibly flexible and can enhance his physical abilities. He has even been known to turn body parts into weapons or defensive tools such as wings.
Apocalypse can project and absorb energy, and has also shown elements of telepathy and telekinesis. You may think that someone with all this power wouldn’t have time to study things, but you’d be wrong because he’s also a genius. Apocalypse is known to have genius level intellect in regards to physics, engineering, genetics and biology. His blood can also be used to heal other mutants, so if anyone is fortunate enough to be on his good side, he’s probably going to keep them alive for a while.
Make sure you remember the name, because he’s the focal villain of the new X-Men film.
