There are lots of ways to get attention in Hollywood. One of those ways is to enter into a pseudo-romantic relationship with another star or aspiring star, and watch the rumors fly. People are fascinated by relationships and marriages for some reason, and the public either loves to see their favorite celebrity without another famous person, or hates to see the romantic choice their idol has selected.
Some people see a marriage as a business opportunity, with a few cuddles and heartfelt moments in between, if there’s time. Fortunately, or maybe unfortunately, this tactic has been working for more people in Hollywood than you may think. While you may suspect that some marriages aren’t exactly sincere when you watch an episode or two of reality television, there are some bonds that are more professional than personal. Even when people suspect or are pretty sure that a Hollywood marriage is fake, it doesn’t stop some from wanting to see how the whole thing will play out. Whether you believe wholeheartedly in the sanctity of marriage, or understand that matrimony could serve as a business merger, observing the dynamics of a “loveless” marriage can be fascinating. Here are 10 marriages in Hollywood that are faker than reality TV.
10. Jonathan Plummer and Terry McMillan
Terry McMillan is the author of popular books that have been made into movies, such as Waiting to Exhale and How Stella Got Her Groove Back. Terry McMillan had a bit of a “Stella” moment of her own when she met Jonathan Plummer, a younger man, and decided to marry him. After seven years as husband and wife, Plummer revealed that he was gay. The two appeared on Oprah twice to talk about their relationship, and McMillan expressed her hurt and anger over Jonathan’s identity. Plummer admitted that he knew he was gay before marrying McMillan, but he loved her and was ashamed of his sexuality.
9. Kris Humphries and Kim Kardashian
Okay, so maybe the marriage wasn’t technically fake, but it was short-lived, and probably happened for all the wrong reasons. There is speculation that Kim Kardashian only scheduled the wedding to get free publicity and products. This is not an illogical assumption, since the marriage only lasted for 72 days. There are also still some rumors going around that the wedding, which was televised on the Kardashian’s reality show, was a way to get extra press. Kris Humphries asserted that he was just a pawn in the game of Kardashian. Then again, Kim’s ring did cost $2 million. That’s a pretty pricey sham, but you can’t put much past celebrities these days.
8. Robert Smith and Brandy
Singer and actress Brandy was in a serious relationship with Robert Smith when the two found out they were expecting a child. They told the media that they tied the knot a few months into Brandy’s pregnancy. However, the songstress revealed years later that she and Smith were actually never husband and wife. She had her people share the story with the media to preserve her “good girl” image. But that’s all behind her now. Brandy has since broken off an engagement to Ryan Press, been a starring cast member in the sitcom The Game, and is currently on Broadway, starring in Chicago.
7. Britney Spears and Jason Alexander
Britney Spears, whose longest marriage was to Kevin Federline, also had a relationship with singer/actor Justin Timberlake and a brief marriage to Jason Alexander. No, not the guy from Seinfeld; this Jason Alexander was a random man Spears met while partying. She and Alexander got hitched in Vegas after lots of drinks. The marriage was annulled two days later, and Britney admitted that she was quite drunk when she said “I do” to Jason. And of course, Alexander wasn’t exactly sober, either. These days, Britney Spears is back in Vegas performing during her residency. She’s belting out the hits everyone wants to hear and putting on quite a show; the kind that won’t embarrass her two days later.
6. Nicky Hilton and Todd Meister
Paris Hilton’s sister married business manager Todd Meister, in Vegas in 2004. But the heiress and fashion designer had the union annulled just three months later, by the same court who annulled Britney Spears’ marriage to Jason Alexander. The reason for the annulment wasn’t made public, so the real cause of the breakup is a mystery to this day. Maybe Meister didn’t have as much money as he claimed. Perhaps Hilton spent a few weeks with him and decided that she didn’t really like him all that much. Or maybe the two just weren’t ready for a commitment. Either way, both of them have been out of the public eye for a while, so it’s likely that they’re not big fans of too much media attention.
5. Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes
The ever-famous movie star and former Dawson’s Creek star were a publicity match made in heaven. In fact, Katie Holmes was the reason for Tom Cruise’s couch leap on Oprah. Years later, people still recall this clip. There are several theories floating around to explain why Holmes and Cruise tied the knot. Some say that Holmes’ career was waning and she needed a way to get back in the spotlight. Others assert that Cruise had his eye on Katie for years, and that theirs was an arranged marriage, because Tom Cruise has that kind of pull. The two have a daughter, which critics also viewed as a way for Katie Holmes to never stop running out of Tom Cruise’s money. The two have been divorced for a couple of years now, and haven’t inundated the media with negative things about each other, probably because it’s not good for either of their careers.
4. Sophia Bush and Chad Michael Murry
Sophia Bush and Chad Michael Murray were co-stars on the popular WB show One Tree Hill. They fell in love while working together and decided to get married. Both were in their early twenties at the time, and likely weren’t ready for the seriousness of marriage. Chad Michael Murry allegedly wasn’t faithful to Sophia Bush, and was constantly entertaining other women. So, after five months as husband and wife, Bush filed for an annulment. But a judge denied her request, and the couple had to get a traditional divorce. The former couple also had to continue working together on One Tree Hill. Awkward.
3. Debbie Rowe and Michael Jackson
Even though Debbie Rowe and Michael Jackson’s union was literally a contract, they were legally married for three years. This was just long enough for Debbie Rowe, a former nurse, to have Michael Jackson’s three children through the process of artificial insemination. Actually, Rowe was already pregnant with Jackson’s first child when his mother, Katherine, insisted that the two become man and wife. After the two divorced, Debbie Rowe admitted that she was paid handsomely to have Jackson’s children for him. She also agreed to give up her parental rights as part of the surrogacy deal, but has since made it clear that she wants to be in her children’s lives.
2. Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt
Even though Pitt and Jolie have been married for years and he has supported her through some very serious health issues, there are still people who say their marriage is fake. The rumor took off when the two actors started dating while working together on Mr. and Mrs. Smith, when Brad Pitt was still legally married to Jennifer Aniston. Jolie and Pitt also took quite some time to actually tie the knot, stating that they wouldn’t get married until there was marriage equality for all. Maybe they didn’t think that would actually happen, and were trying to make a political statement while avoiding marriage. At any rate, the two are officially hitched now, and have both biological and adopted children to make their family complete. There are even reports that Jolie admitted to the fact that she and Brad Pitt are in an open relationship.
1. Kris and Bruce Jenner
The Jenners are officially divorced after more than 20 years of marriage. That’s a long time to fake it, so there’s a good chance that there was some love there. But when your husband reveals to you that he wants to become a woman, there’s nothing left to do but end your marriage. There have long been rumors going around that Kris is obsessed with fame and money, and will do anything to make sure that she and her family stay in the spotlight. Many people also question why she and Bruce Jenner stayed together for so long, since hiding one’s gender identity for so long can be challenging. Kris, who is also famous for being married to attorney Robert Kardashian, has referred to Bruce Jenner as her “hero” for his bravery in terms of embracing his desire to be a woman. Interesting!
