It’s no secret that hair is very important to women. Not only is it closely tied to beauty, but it also plays a big role in one’s individual identity. Long, flowing hair has come to be seen as a symbol of femininity, while short hair is more often associated with masculinity. According to the Bible, long hair was considered a woman’s “glory,” or her “pride and joy.” Therefore, when a woman chops off her hair, she is challenging the so-called “norms” of gender.
There are several reasons why a female celebrity might decide to go bald. Maybe it’s for a good cause, like bringing awareness to a disease; maybe it’s for a certain role; or maybe they do it to make a fashion statement or because they simply like the way it looks. Whatever the case, not everyone can pull off the look. It takes a certain degree of confidence (and good bone structure).
Lately, what with the growing popularity of hairstyles like the pixie cut and the bob, it seems as though more and more women are opting for shorter hairdos. Who knows, maybe one day the bald look will be in fashion. After all, in today’s progressive world, the lines between gender are becoming increasingly blurred.
Here’s the list of 10 gorgeous celebs who willingly went bald.
10. Karen Gillan
Karen Gillan has been popping up in films more and more lately, but she is perhaps best known for her role in Doctor Who as Amy Pond, companion to the doctor. Gillan is famous for her beautiful bright red hair, which is why it was such a shocker when she chopped it all off to play Nebula, the villain in the hit film Guardians of the Galaxy. Sporting blue makeup and a clean-shaven head, she was virtually unrecognizable in the film. You can check out the video of her getting her hair cut off on YouTube. Near the end of it she can be heard saying: “Oh my god. It’s happened. It’s actually happened! And that’s how easy it is just to get rid of all your hair.”
9. Jessie J.
Back in 2013, Jessie J. had her hair shaved off for Comic Relief, a British charity. She made the daring move in an effort to help raise donations. The English musician, known for hits like “Bang Bang” and “Price Tag,” had become known for her short black bob, but if you ask us, she looks even better without hair. She apparently thought so too, as she decided to shave her head once more in 2015 shortly after splitting up with her boyfriend.
8. Charlize Theron
Charlize Theron recently chopped off her golden locks to play Furiosa, the strong female lead of Mad Max: Fury Road. Believe it or not it was Theron’s idea to shave off her hair. After she and director George Miller had trouble finding a hairstyle that made her look tough, Theron suggested that they buzz it all off. As soon as Miller signed off on it, she grabbed some clippers and did the job herself. Pretty bold on her part.
7. Demi Moore
Demi Moore’s never really been known for her acting abilities, but in 1997 she went all out for the Ridley Scott film G.I. Jane, which is about the first woman to go through U.S. Navy Special Warfare training. In order to play the part, she had to shave off all of her hair. Unfortunately that alone wasn’t enough to save her performance, and she went on to win the Razzie Award for Worst Actress.
6. Cynthia Nixon
Cynthia Nixon is best known for her role on Sex and the City, playing Miranda Hobbes, the career-oriented friend of Carrie Bradshaw. Aside from television, Nixon is also an accomplished stage actress, and she shaved off her red hair a few years ago for a role in the Broadway play Wit. She received a Tony nomination for her portrayal of Vivian Bearing, an English professor dying of ovarian cancer. Although she liked the bald look, she said she didn’t want to keep it forever.
5. Kellie Pickler
Country musician and former American Idol contestant Kellie Pickler shaved off her signature blonde hair for a good cause. After learning of her friend’s breast cancer diagnosis, Pickler, whose grandmother passed away from cancer, decided to go on Good Morning America and buzz her head in a sign of solidarity. Her friend, Summer Miller, said of Pickler’s decision: “If this compels even one person to change their mentality toward waiting until the age of 40 for their mammogram, then it will be worth it.”
4. Britney Spears
We all remember the Britney Spears meltdown of 2007. After years of being in the spotlight, Spears, who’d gone through an ugly and very public divorce with Kevin Federline finally hit her breaking point. The meltdown culminated with her shaving off all of her hair for no apparent reason. Shortly after, sporting her new clean-headed look, she took an umbrella to a paparazzo’s car, leading many to believe that she had lost her mind. Thankfully, Spears has since grown back her long blonde hair and mounted a successful comeback.
3. Sigourney Weaver
What is it with baldheaded women in action movies? Setting the way for Natalie Portman, Charlize Theron, and Demi Moore was Sigourney Weaver, who buzzed her head for the third instalment of the Alien franchise. It was director David Fincher’s idea to shave her head, helping to add a new dimension to the famous Ellen Ripley character by making her look less feminine and more rugged. Weaver said that she had to shave every two days in order to keep the same look throughout the film.
2. Amber Rose
Amber Rose is famous for dating rappers Kanye West and Wiz Khalifa. By now, she has become synonymous with a buzzed head. In fact, if you were to see a picture of her with hair you probably wouldn’t even recognize her. Rose keeps her hair short (and usually blonde) by choice, as it gives her a unique look that helps her stand out from the rest of the crowd. Back in 2011, she said she was inspired to shave her head because of another famous bald celebrity: Sinead O’Connor.
1. Natalie Portman
Academy Award winner Natalie Portman famously shaved her head for the 2006 film V for Vendetta. Better yet, she shaved her head in the film. In a powerful scene, Portman can be seen crying and shaking while her long dark locks are being buzzed off (you can tell that her reaction is somewhat genuine). Not one to shy away from an acting challenge, Portman actually enjoyed her low maintenance hairdo and said the only stressful thing about it was that it had to be done in one take. Fortunately for her, she looked great with ultra short hair.
