This week sees the hugely anticipated release of the completely inappropriate comic book superhero Deadpool, and 2016 is set to be a strong year for the superhero genre. Due to be released this year are Batman vs Superman: Dawn of Justice, Suicide Squad, Captain America: Civil War, X-Men: Apocalypse, Gambit, Doctor Strange and Sinister Six. Plenty of choice for the proud geek.
Both DC and Marvel have garnered audience interest by turning their heroes against each other, or bringing them together. With the upcoming Batman vs Superman film getting some attention for DC (though not as much as Suicide Squad, understandably) the Marvel Cinematic Universe Phase Three is set to pit Captain America against Iron Man in Captain America: Civil War.
This got us thinking. Arrow often crosses with The Flash, and The Flash is due to cross with Super Girl. Daredevil and Elektra storylines intertwine and Wonder Woman can be seen in the upcoming Batman vs Superman, but what crossovers or battles would we like to see from DC and Marvel in the future? What about Wonder Woman vs Super Girl? Or Robin vs Gambit?
Here we list the top 10 crossovers we would like to see in the future, assuming there is any space left for more superhero films after this year.
10. Daredevil & Batman
One turned rogue when both of his parents were killed and he vowed vengeance on the criminal underworld that took away all that he held dear. The other blind, lost his father at the hands of the criminal underworld and turned renegade. Both of them are human rather than metahuman, and use their learned skill and gadgets to take on their foes. The two may be well suited in terms of battle, and their individual storylines parallel stories of grief and pain offer dark and intriguing opportunities for explorative narrative development. They would appear to be well suited in terms of motivation and ability, though Daredevil may need to up his level of gadgetry.
9. Supergirl & Wonder Woman
Wonder Woman is highly regarded as the strongest female superhero. An extremely experienced and agile Amazonian warrior, she has already taken on Superman and been victorious. In terms of battle this does not bode well for Supergirl, Superman’s younger cousin. Whilst she is younger and less experienced than Wonder Woman, she is faster and practically invincible with intense strength and the ability to fly. This pairing could either provide an unstoppable team, or an epic battle. As both of their motivations are simply to do good, a pairing as a team against a foe would make more sense. That is a team we would beg to be on.
8. The Flash & Quicksilver
This is not an original concept in the comic book world. Fan boys have been pitting these speedsters against each other for many years. Both possess the ability to run at incredible speeds, they are both able to fly (albeit with restrictions) and they can both utilise epic strength by putting their speed behind a punch. Yet despite their similarities there are certain differences that would make either a battle or a team-up interesting. The Flash has accelerated healing powers and whilst both of them have accelerated thinking, it works in different ways. The Flash is able to phase through objects and cause a Vortex whilst Quicksilver can use molecular destabilisation.
Pitting these two against each other has the potential to provide a very entertaining battle, or pairing them would make an epic team. Though it may be over very quickly.
7. The Hulk & The Beast
Nuclear radiation has a lot to answer for in the comic book world, not least of all these two. The Beast, or just Beast, is a founding member of the X-Men and is known for his bright blue animal like appearance. The Hulk is known for his bright green appearance when provoked and is a founding member of The Avengers. Much like the Daredevil/Batman crossover, the character back stories parallel well and would give both characters similar motivations. In terms of abilities both characters have super-human strength, however Hulks is based on his level of anger, and seemingly limitless, whereas Beast’s is limited but constant. The Hulk is impervious to damage or injury (depending on which adaptation you read/watch) whilst Beast has rapid healing abilities. Beast also has intense senses with a high level of dexterity and agility. Whilst Hulk’s alter-ego Bruce Banner is incredibly clever in his human form, Beasts intellect is advanced and constant. Both are quite evenly matched, though Beast’s added abilities may outweigh Hulks sheer strength.
6. Black Widow & Harley Quinn
Black Widow is an orphan who was trained from an early age as a Soviet spy. She is highly trained in hand to hand combat and a variety of martial arts and fighting techniques. She is gifted in terms of intellect and has been enhanced by biotechnology which means she is resistant to age and heals at a superhuman rate. As for Harley Quinn, she is insane. The Joker’s female sidekick began life as a psychiatrist but was driven insane by the sight of the Joker’s beaten body. She is skilled in hand to hand combat and the use of weapons, especially her mallet. Her insanity also adds a mania and a strength to her fighting. It is easy to underestimate her when looking at Black Widow, but Harley Quinn could put up a strong fight.
5. Ghost Rider & Spawn
This is cheating a little, as Spawn is neither DC nor Marvel but they are so similar they had to be included. Both of these characters have similar stories, having both essentially sold their souls. Ghost Rider originally sells his soul in order to save his Father. He is then given the power of Hellfire, which gives him a flaming skull and supernatural powers. He is practically indestructible and has superhuman strength. Alongside his powers, Ghost Rider has a motorbike that is capable of travelling faster than a conventional motorbike, and is capable of feats such as riding up vertical walls. Spawn also sold out to evil when sent to Hell in order to return to Earth. As a Hellspawn his abilities include superhuman strength, speed and durability as well as regenerating his wounds. He is also skilled in hand to hand combat, which would make this face-off an exciting, if dark one.
4. Deadpool & Deathstroke
So it is little secret that Deadpool is a mocking rip-off of Deathstroke. They share almost the same name (Slade Wilson/Wade Wilson) however they have differing abilities. Put them together, it may well go off. Deathstroke began as a soldier who took part in a project which then gave him enhanced strength, intelligence and agility. Deathstroke also has regenerative abilities and enhanced senses. Deadpool’s origins are somewhat vague, under the cover of a mental condition. However his abilities are not dissimilar to Deathstroke’s. He has physical prowess and exceptional regenerative abilities, but he also possesses a telepathic immunity and superhuman stamina and agility. Unfortunately Deathstroke does not possess Deadpool’s ability to quip, which is by far his greatest asset.
3. Suicide Squad & The Avengers
Marvel’s team of fighters including Captain America, Hawkeye, Black Widow, Iron Man, Thor and Hulk teamed against DC’s messed up band of renegades including Harley Quinn, Deadshot, Bronze Tiger, Black Spider and El Diablo. Oh the fun. Whilst The Avengers may well outweigh the Squad in terms of training, the sheer mental instability of the members of Squad bring with it an unpredictability and utter mania that is a strength all of its own. Plus, it would be a lot of fun to watch. This would also depend on which Avengers line up against the Squad. Faced by Hulk and Thor, they would stand little chance, however if they were not in the lineup, this may go a different way.
2. Green Arrow & Hawkeye
Two of the best archers in the world, one a brooding millionaire and the other a circus trained orphan. Both have excellent archery skills and both are trained in martial arts. They also both have a variety of gadgets and trick arrows at their disposal. Both are physically fit and agile due to their training. One slight advantage for Green Arrow is that he is a talented tactician, where as Hawkeye tends to be more of a brawler. Hawkeye is a talented weapons man and is able to fashion weapons out of almost anything, as opposed to Green Arrow who is a talented inventor but takes time over his weapon inventions. Green Arrow is, however, an excellent hunter and stalker which may be Hawkeye’s downfall. These two are fairly evenly matched, and those make the best fights.
1. The Avengers & Justice League
Ok, so in the comic book world this has already happened but it would make an almighty film, hence it being number 1 on this list. Superman going up against Thor, Batman against Iron Man, Wonder Woman against…well…anybody. The possibilities for epic fights are numerous within these two teams, though the city which they fight in might end up a little worse for wear. Both of these teams have had numerous line ups over the years, so it depends on which team members are used as to who has the edge, although a team with both Wonder Woman and Superman may have the better odds but in the end, who cares. It would just be an awesome, apocalyptic battle to watch.
