Breaking up is never easy to do, and it’s likely even more challenging when you’re in the public eye. Not only have paparazzi been following celebs throughout their entire relationship, they’re also after them to get the scoop on how and why the relationship didn’t work out. Depending on the level of fame some of these individuals have reached, they can’t even hang out with friends or get a little retail therapy in to get over the breakup without some guy with a camera “strongly suggesting” that they answer questions about their past relationship that can be a little uncomfortable.
Aside from getting harassed in public, some celebrities have even taken to embarrassing their former flames. Perhaps this is a form of revenge. Maybe it’s a way to try and heal from the hurt of the breakup. Whatever the motive, entertainment reporters everywhere wait on these juicy gossip morsels, which make for intriguing stories. The public shaming could even work in the favor of some celebrities, depending on the circumstances of the defunct relationship. It’s not the best path to stardom, but it could help. Here’s a look at 10 celebrities who took the not-so-high road of shaming their past loves for everyone to see and hear.
10. Linda Hogan
Linda Hogan was married to former wrestler Hulk Hogan. The Hogan family even enjoyed reality show success for a time on Hogan Knows Best. After their divorce, Linda stated that Hogan was a narcissist and a pathological liar. She also claimed that during the darkest times in their marriage, he was physically abusive to her. She wrote a tell-all book to reveal more of the hardships she and her family endured, while Hogan was a professional wrestler with the World Wrestling Federation and various other business ventures. Linda Hogan went on to date a much younger man, Charley Hill. Hill was 19 and she was 48, when he proposed to her in 2012.
9. Sophia Bush
Sophia Bush starred in One Tree Hill with her boyfriend, fiancé, husband and now ex-husband, Chad Michael Murray. She admitted on an episode of Watch What Happens Live on Bravo, that Murray “pretty much hates her.” When a fan called in to ask Bush when she and Murray last spoke, she responded that her mother told her if she didn’t have anything nice to say, not to say anything at all. That says a lot. The former couple had to work together for more seasons on One Tree Hill, and Bush stated that she learned how to deal with it. She also asserts that she and Chad were “two stupid kids who had no business being in a relationship in the first place.” Ouch. But at least she takes part of the responsibility for their split.
8. Russell Brand
The British comedian and actor is known for lots of things, but tact isn’t one of them. He was married to singer Katy Perry for a short time, and alluded to the fact that their love life wasn’t that great. He stated that “when you’re a monk, you’re not allowed to have sex with anyone. When you’re married, it’s one person. That’s one more than a monk.” This statement also indicated that perhaps Brand wasn’t ready for a commitment. He went on to say “I’d be having sex thinking, ‘think of anyone, anyone else’.” Definitely not cool, and obviously something the two should have kept within their marriage.
7. Rita Ora
The singer dissed her ex-boyfriend Rob Kardashian, most likely after he took to Twitter claiming that she was less than a decent woman. She fired back by stating that his lovemaking skills were “wack” and that she had to get her needs met elsewhere. This could indicate that she was not faithful in the relationship, which may have led to Kardashian’s hurtful and alarming Tweets. Or maybe she responded out of retaliation, in an attempt to embarrass him as much as he’d embarrassed her. Either way, this airing of dirty laundry is a little less than classy on both ends.
6. Olivia Wilde
Actress and model Olivia Wilde seems to be in a happy relationship with Jason Sudeikis of Saturday Night Live. But prior to their relationship, she was married to Tao Ruspoli and she didn’t have much to say anything good about it after the breakup. Wilde stated that she felt like her lady parts “died” and “turned off.” She also used the phrase “lights out.” It’s safe to say there were some issues in the intimacy department for these two. Could it have worked out? Who knows. It’s hard to see your way to reconciliation when the lights are out.
5. Charlie Sheen
Sheen is known for his angry tirades, and anyone he’s irritated with at the moment could be a target. His relationship with ex-wife Denise Richards seems to be a civil and friendly one these days. However, at the height of their disagreements, he sent her a message to “rot in hell.” Pretty harsh words for someone who is the mother of your children. But it looks like the two have made up for the good of the kids. It’s also likely that Richards is used to Sheen’s fiery temper. But still, those words are usually reserved for someone you sincerely hate.
4. Kevin Hart
Kevin Hart has been quoted in the media quite often for throwing jabs at his ex-wife, Torrei Hart. He made it pretty clear that he no longer wanted to be exposed to her anger and nasty attitude. He also stated that he was always a happier person than her. The year they got divorced, 2011, Hart stated that he had a “good year” due to the fact that he was no longer married to Torrei. After a series of feuds that were recorded online, the two seem to be on good terms now. Hart recently bought his ex a new car, and she expressed her thanks on social media.
3. Justin Timberlake
At least Timberlake had the creative decency to make his public shaming into a song. His hit “Cry Me a River” was very likely about his ex Britney Spears. Rumors were swirling that Spears cheated on Timberlake with Wade Robson, a choreographer and dancer. The lyrics to the song were pretty straight-forward: “I already know/I found out from him/now there’s just no chance for you and me/there’ll never be.” The song goes on to say “your bridges are burned and now it’s your turn to cry.” Timberlake also cast a woman for the video who looks a lot like Britney Spears.
2. Ben Affleck
Ben Affleck is a talented actor and director, but he is also well-known for his very public relationship with singer/actor/dancer Jennifer Lopez. The two were engaged for a time and sent the media into a frenzy whenever there was a “Bennifer” spotting. Affleck stated that he got out of the relationship because he felt “suffocated, miserable and gross.” That’s got to sting. It has also been reported that Affleck’s mother didn’t approve of the relationship, which may have been a factor in his split from Lopez. Ben Affleck is now married to actress Jennifer Garner and Lopez has recently claimed that she’s taking time to find herself before getting into another relationship.
1. Brad Pitt
Brad Pitt is almost as well known for his divorce from Jennifer Aniston, as he is for his acting career. In 2011, Pitt stated that while he was married to Aniston he “wasn’t living a very interesting life.” He also stated that he was trying to pretend that the marriage was “something that it wasn’t.” So, he basically called his then-wife boring and alluded to the fact that their marriage was one big happy charade. Nice. Brad Pitt later stated that his words were taken out of context and that he was referring to the unhappiness he felt with his career at the time. Is that an apology?
