While the 2004 film, Mean Girls, was geared towards teenagers and was generally a comedy, the notion of breaking down other women isn’t exactly a new concept. While everyone has known at least one mean girl personality that thrives on cutting down other women, it’s surprising when this type of behavior is evident in the celebrity world.
The public likes to think that those that have reached rich and famous status have done so because of their good-hearted nature and ability to be kind towards others, but that definitely isn’t always the case. While reality show competitions seem to give the nice personalities a leg up, not every celebrity is made famous through their kind and heartwarming backstory.
For those that have been able to reach the celebrity level, it’s inevitable they will become surrounded with others that are equally famous. From walking the red carpet to co-starring in television and film, celebrities have to interact with more than just their fans. Although there is usually a whole team of public relations professionals whose sole responsibility is to maintain an appealing persona in the public eye, that doesn’t mean the public has been completely fooled.
From subtle jabs about other celebrities to full out feuds in public, not all the beautiful starlets in Hollywood are supportive of one another in every way. Check out our list of 10 celebrity hotties with secret mean girl tendencies, and see which celebrities aren’t as nice as they would have you believe.
10. Kate Gosselin
Kate Gosselin first made a name for herself as a “mean girl” when audiences saw how she would belittle and berate her husband on the show Jon & Kate Plus 8. After the two divorced (what a shocker!), Kate continued in reality TV through the show Kate Plus 8. At the time, Sarah Palin also had a reality show on TLC, Sarah Palin’s Alaska. The dynamic between Palin and Gosselin when the “cast” for the two shows got together was awkward to say the least, with Gosselin’s mean girl tendencies coming out in full force when things didn’t go her way. Making snide comments to Palin, she asks, “You really like this?” about their group camping trip. Rather than staying and enjoying the campsite set up by the Palin’s, Gosselin promptly packed up her kids and left.
9. Ariana Grande
While other artists would be thrilled at being compared to the amazing Mariah Carey, Ariana Grande reportedly found it extremely irritating. She is also known for her obsession with only being photographed on the left side of her face, and has even made media demands at certain events stipulating only photos from the left side can be used. Even when taking photos with fans, Grande had an incident made public in 2014 when she demanded one of her fans delete the photos taken on her phone. Rather than embracing a girl that won a contest to meet the starlet, Grande tried to put her in her place.
Rihanna is known for her social media posts that don’t care about the impression being left for her fans. Even though she has a very impressionable and young fan base, she often fills her posts with stripper outings and extremely provocative pictures. Yet, it was the exchange with one young fan that showed the ugly mean girl side to Rihanna. Looking to emulate the Alexandre Vauthier jumpsuit Rihanna donned at the 2010 Eche Awards, 16-year-old Alexis Carter posted a photo of herself wearing a similar outfit on Twitter. Rihanna perpetuated the #PromBat mockery, and even put a side-by-side comparison with the high school student and the Wu-Tang Clan logo. Someone must have forgotten to tell Rihanna that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.
7. Nicole Richie
Nicole Richie started off as just the unknown celebrity kid that was friends with Paris Hilton. Being cast on The Simple Life was a way to introduce her to the public, but it also gave insight into how entitled she was and demeaning to those around her. In one infamous episode, Richie exploded into a tantrum at a local pool hall when she couldn’t find her purse. Grabbing a bottle of bleach, she threw it and caused property damage for the poor innocent lounge owner. Yet, it was the falling out between Hilton and Richie that showed her true mean girl side. While claiming to be her best friend, Richie hosted a viewing party to watch Hilton’s sex tape, which ultimately caused the friendship to dissolve.
6. Christina Aguilera
Christina Aguilera has been more successful as the judge television personality on The Voice than through her music career lately, since it’s been quite some time since her music has reached Beyonce or Rihanna status. Yet, her time on The Voice has been filled with stories of clashing egos with the other judges, and the latest involves a feud with Gwen Stefani. Stefani replaced Aguilera on the show when she left to tour, but some of Aguilera’s stage performances also drew attention due to her mean girl tendencies. Cameras caught Aguilera spitting cough drops and gum out into the crowd, and even throwing it directly at a fan in one case.
5. Nicki Minaj
Nicki Minaj isn’t new to throwing shade at other women in the celebrity world, since her feud with Mariah Carey was basically the only reason why fans still tuned into American Idol. Countless eye rolls and verbal jabs were played out behind the judge’s table, and there was even a moment where she mocked ringing Carey’s neck behind her back. Just when you can write it off as just two divas clashing heads, Minaj recently started up her shenanigans with Demi Lovato on the red carpet. The pair were photographed at the 2016 Met Gala, but Minaj was not happy to share the spotlight when she was buddied up with Jeremy Scott, the designer who created both of their gowns.
4. Reese Witherspoon
Reese Witherspoon often tries to play the “Southern Belle” role off screen, even bringing southern-style gifts to Ellen DeGeneres whenever appearing on the daytime talk show. Considered one of America’s Sweethearts, her secret mean girl side became public knowledge when details emerged regarding her arrest in 2013. Her husband, Jim Toth, was being arrested for a DUI when Witherspoon got out of the car and began pulling the fame card in the worst way possible. Saying, “Do you know my name?” she seemed legitimately baffled that she had to actually follow the law like other people. Her mugshot shows a smug-looking Witherspoon not even complying to look directly into the camera.
3. Mariah Carey
It’s hard to say who the true perpetrator was in the Mariah Carey feud with Nicki Minaj back in Season 12 of American Idol. While Carey definitely threw a fair amount of shade, Minaj was much more blatant about her attacks. Whether it was just Carey defending herself or exuding that famous diva-like behavior, the incident involving Jennifer Lopez was much clearer. Back in the early 2000s, Carey was approached by the paparazzi when they mentioned Lopez’s name, and Carey replied, “I don’t know her.” The quote went down in history, and in early 2016 paparazzi again approached Carey about the incident, and she replied, “I still don’t know her.” Lopez appeared on the Wendy Williams Show and said, “[Carey] is forgetful, I guess… We’ve met many times.”
2. Taylor Swift
Taylor Swift started off her career with hit songs like, “You Belong With Me,” depicting her as an awkward teenager that was always on the outs with the popular crowd. However, in real life she has become the leader of a popular group, with celebrities preening to be in her “squad” and hoping to not fall out with the Queen. Her music has also changed in recent years, with most of her best hits stemming from kiss-and-tell antics about all her ex-boyfriends. While some celebrities seem to be ostracized by their numerous sexual relationships, somehow Swift has stayed under the radar despite the long list of exes.
Beyoncé has some of the most dedicated fans, known as the “Beyhive.” Yet with great power comes great responsibility, and Beyoncé never puts her fans in check. Seeming to use the Beyhive to do all her dirty work, the most infamous incident involved Kid Rock and his comments on not finding Beyoncé attractive. The Beyhive unleashed bee symbols throughout his social media over-and-over, which completely shut it down. Beyoncé could have easily told her fans to leave Kid Rock alone, but she let it happen and probably let out an evil laugh behind-the-scenes. Beyoncé’s recent Lemonade album also made headlines since her “Becky with the good hair” line had the Beyhive on the attack once again.
