Most celebrities are loved and adored by the masses. After all, it’s the fans that buy their merchandise, pay for their albums, go to their movies and watch their television shows, which essentially keeps them employed. Then, there are the celebrities that everyone seems to love to hate. They’re the stars that fill the pages of tabloid magazines and that everyone can’t seem to stop talking about, even though they’re not necessarily loved by the masses. Some of them have done unspeakable things to rightfully earn this hatred, while other celebrities have simply rubbed the world the wrong way. Either way, these celebs have made the list for one reason or another. Here are the ten celebrities we love to hate and why.
10. Anne Hathaway
Anne Hathaway was once the girl next door that everyone loved and adored. She starred in family films like, The Princess Diaries and Ella Enchanted. Hathaway has become an A-list actress with major roles in critically acclaimed films like, The Dark Knight Rises and Les Miserables. Although her acting career has taken off, Anne’s off camera persona has been deemed insincere and rehearsed. Many feel she takes herself far too seriously, which makes Hathaway unrelatable. Even though Anne has done nothing offensive, the fact that she comes off as too goody, too serious and too into herself, makes her an easy target for hatred.
9. Kristen Stewart
Ever since Kristen Stewart played the role of Bella in the Twilight series, Stewart has been criticized for her inability to show emotions or act. Many fans of the Twilight Saga took notice of Stewart’s lack of interest in interviews and her loathing for the films that made her famous. Kristen took a lot of heat when she was caught by paparazzi, cheating on Robert Pattinson with married film director, Rupert Sanders. This cheating scandal was the tipping point for Twilight fans and the fans that once loved her, showed their support for Pattinson by hating Stewart.
8. Lindsay Lohan
That adorable little redheaded girl from the, Parent Trap is gone forever and what seems to be left of her is a twenty-seven year old woman, who can’t seem to get her life together. Lindsay has been fired from several film projects in recent years, because of her unpredictable behavior and the fact that she is completely unemployable in Hollywood. Her six failed attempts at rehab and ongoing trouble with the law is played out and her fans seem to be fed up her. Lohan’s docu-series, Lindsay, on the OWN network was cancelled after one season, due to poor ratings and Lohan’s unwillingness to promote or cooperate. Radar Online reported that reruns of SpongeBob Squarepants had more viewers than Lohan’s docu-series. It’s clear people just don’t really care about Lindsay Lohan anymore.
7. Gwyneth Paltrow
Gwyneth Paltrow seems like the all American girl, until she opens her mouth. Gwyneth has received a lot of hate recently for the ridiculous things she says. The A-list actress preaches clean eating and living, which is all well and good, but then she says things like, “I’d rather smoke crack than eat cheese from a tin,” or “I would rather die than let my kid eat Cup-a-Soup.” Paltrow also thinks very highly of herself and isn’t afraid to make that clear. Gwyneth stated in an interview with ELLE UK magazine, “I am who I am. I can’t pretend to be somebody who makes $25,000 a year.” She has also been quoted saying that her job as a mom and a movie star is more difficult than a mom with a 9-5 job. Paltrow released a cookbook titled, “It’s All Good” in 2013 and received much criticism when it was discovered that her recipes for one day would cost a family $300. This shows how out of touch Gwyneth is with reality.
6. Taylor Swift
Country singer, Taylor Swift came onto the scene in 2006 with her first album, and she instantly had a place in America’s hearts. Her innocence, “surprised” looks and Southern demeanor were a breath of fresh air in Hollywood. As more songs and albums were released, the public realized that every single one of her songs was about an ex-boyfriend, a current boyfriend or a potential boyfriend. Every week, Swift seemed to be dating someone new and in three years, she had dated fifteen guys, which completely destroyed her innocent image. Tina Fey and Amy Poehler joked about Taylor’s serial dating history, while hosting the Golden Globe Awards this year. Swift didn’t find it very funny responding, “There’s a special place in hell for women who don’t help out other women,” – and that is why Swift has made this list.
5. Chris Brown
Chris Brown makes this list for obvious reasons. In February 2009, Chris and then girlfriend, Rihanna got into a heated argument, which ended in domestic violence. Rihanna had severe injuries that required hospital treatment. After that, Chris Brown continued on his downward spiral and ended up on America’s most hated list. In March 2011, while appearing on Good Morning America, Brown became violent and angry after being questioned about the Rihanna incident. He threw a chair at a window, fought with several GMA staff, took off his shirt and stormed out of the building. Since these incidents, Brown has been in several fights, including altercations with Drake, Frank Ocean and Tony Parker. Chris has been in and out of rehab and jail for several years. His violent behavior, drug use and disregard for the law is enough explanation for why society loves to hate him.
4. Kim Kardashian
Kim Kardashian has been criticized since she came on the scene and became the ‘It Girl.’ The fact that her fame is directly linked to a “leaked” sex tape with rapper, Ray J has caused a lot of controversy. She’s criticized for being famous and having no real talent. Kim’s most intimate moments are used to garner more fame and more money, so her entire life seems scripted. After her 72 day marriage to NBA basketball player, Kris Humphries, many of her fans felt duped by the socialite and since then, the backlash against Kim has continued. She has been criticized for her measly 10% charitable donations from her online auctions in which she receives the items for free anyways. The loathing for Kim Kardashian was in full effect and in plain sight, when she landed the cover of Vogue for the April 2014 issue and there was no denying that people love to hate Kim.
3. Katherine Heigl
Katherine Heigl, at one point was earning $12 million a film, but her bad attitude and reports that she was extremely difficult to work with quickly made a dent in her career. Past co-stars have reported that Heigl complains about everything on set, including the script, the Kraft food service, the wardrobe and the crew. Katherine slammed her own film, Knocked Up, saying it was sexist. She also ridiculed the writers of Grey’s Anatomy, stating they didn’t give her any good material to work with and that is why she didn’t receive an Emmy nomination. People showed their disapproval for Heigl, by not showing up to her films. Katherine’s last three big movies, including, One for the Money, Life as We Know It and Killers all bombed at the box office. As of now, Heigl is working vigorously on her comeback, but it doesn’t appear anyone wants her to come back.
2. Justin Bieber
Justin Bieber has received an abundance of hate from society and even fellow celebrities. His bad behavior, which began in 2013, has landed him more headlines than his actual career ever has. He’s drag raced, driven under the influence, spit on fans, got banned from Germany, urinated in a janitorial bucket at a restaurant, fought with paparazzi, fought with DJ’s and abandoned his pet monkey – just to name a few. He shows no remorse for his actions and his responses when questioned are full of arrogance. Seth Rogen has been very vocal about his thoughts on Justin Bieber and he even took to Twitter to tweet, “All jokes aside… Justin Bieber is a piece of sh-t.” In 2013, Justin Bieber visited the Anne Frank House in Amsterdam and wrote the following absurd message in the guest book, “… Anne was a great girl. Hopefully she would have been a belieber” – and that is why Bieber haters outnumber beliebers.
1. Kanye West
Kanye West was once respected for his creativity, his work and his music, but then he grabbed that mic out of Taylor Swift’s hand, cutting her off in the middle of her acceptance speech to make his own declaration. After the incident, even President Barrack Obama referred to Kanye West as a, “jack-a**” signifying that the whole country hated Kanye. Kanye continued to do interviews, making ridiculous statements like, “… I will go down as the voice of this generation,” and “I’m going to go down as a legend.” Kanye has also compared himself to Beethoven, Steve Jobs, Picasso and even, Jesus. At the MTV Europe Music Awards, Kanye crashed the stage after losing, Best Video of The Year to the band Justice and declared, “If I lose, this awards show loses all credibility.” Finally, Kanye hit the nail in the coffin when he proposed to Kim Kardashian, making them the most hated couple in the world.
