The perks of being a celebrity is the attention you get from the world. However, the downside of being a celebrity is also the attention you get from the world. Yes, being in the public eye has its ups and downs. All the good you do is documented and shared with your admirers and you’re revered as a great person and ideal role model. But then, all your dirty laundry is likewise aired for all the world to devour, like fodder for a horse.
Being a celebrity is tough. But having your private life massacred out in the open is part and parcel with your status. Unfortunately, family rifts always make for the juiciest of gossip stories.
Here’s a list of stars who’ve famously had rifts with certain members of their families. Some have patched things up and some are still at odds and ends with their loved ones. Here’s hoping that love and harmony may eventually be restored in their respective families, as repaired relationships are a big part of the healing and growing process.
10. Demi Lovato
Many child stars have suffered from the curse of growing up with issues, having cracked under the pressure of being under the limelight at too young an age. One example is Demi Lovato, once the sweet and cute darling of Disney productions. The 21-year-old suffered from bulimia, drug, and alcohol abuse, but has cleaned up her act since. Lovato had been estranged from her father, Patrick Lovato, since 2010 and said she had no intentions of rekindling their relationship. He passed away in 2013 without making amends with his daughter.
9. Macaulay Culkin
With hits like Home Alone, Home Alone 2, and My Girl, Macaulay Culkin was one of the biggest child stars of the ‘90s. He was making millions in his movies and since he was a minor, his father handled his money for him. Being a father to two child stars, Macaulay and his brother Kieran, Kit Culkin ran a tight ship. He was the proverbial stage father, over-meddling in all of his children’s affairs. It was too much for the young Culkins to take. In 1997, Macaulay, at the age of 17, legally emancipated himself from his father. Kieran soon followed suit.
8. Ariel Winter
Another child actor makes it to the list of celebrities estranged from their parents. Ariel Winter plays Alex, the adorable middle child of Claire and Phil Dunphy in the hit TV show, Modern Family. However, Winter’s family life is far from her wacky, close-knit TV family. Winter claimed her mother, Chrisoula Workman, physically and emotionally abused her and she promptly filed for emancipation. The court granted her request and Winter now stays with her sister, who has temporary custody of Winter until she turns 18.
7. Christina Aguilera
Former Mickey Mouse Club star Christina Aguilera went on to be one of the most successful pop artists in the world. She came to be known to the mainstream music world with her hit song, “Genie in a Bottle” and has scored numerous other billboard hits since then. However, this poor little rich girl came from a troubled past. She is not on speaking terms with her father, Fausto Aguilera because she claimed he physically and emotionally abused her during the time he was still married to her mother. She is open to the idea of reconciling, though no steps have been taken yet in that direction.
6. Jennifer Aniston
When Jennifer Aniston shot up to stardom during her stint playing Rachel in the TV hit show, Friends, she became estranged from her mother, Nancy Dow. The latter put her daughter in a bad light when she talked about her on a television show, which caused the dispute. Then to make matters worse, she wrote a book entitled, From Mother to Daughter to Friends: a Memoir alluding to Aniston in the book. Although when Aniston and her then husband Brad Pitt called it quits in a highly-publicized divorce in 2005, Aniston decided to make amends with her mother.
5. Kate Hudson
With a famous mother like Goldie Hawn, many thought that daughter Kate Hudson would simply be in her shadow as she tried her luck in Hollywood. Boy, were they wrong. Kate Hudson has definitely come into her own. She may carry her biological father, Bill Hudson’s last name, but it was her mother’s long-time partner, Kurt Russell, who raised her as his own. She says she’s not on speaking terms with her father, saying he “doesn’t know me from a hole in the wall.” She said she was glad she had Russell as her father growing up.
Who would think that a multi-million dollar pop star would have immediate family members who were destitute? Such is the case for Madonna, one of the most famous cultural icons and music artists in the world. With a music career that has spanned three decades and counting, hers was the classic tale of rags to riches. She has two biological brothers and has had friction with both at one point or another. Her older brother, Anthony Ciccone is homeless and repeatedly bashes his famous sister for not bothering to help him, calling her a “b****.”
3. Drew Barrymore
As far as troubled child stars go, Drew Barrymore is the epitome of it. Born into the famous Barrymore family, she is the granddaughter of screen legend John Barrymore and won the hearts of many when she played little Gertie in Steven Spielberg’s blockbuster film, ET. However, her success in her professional life didn’t carry over to her personal life. During her adolescence and early teens she was partying at Studio 54 with her mother, doing drugs and alcohol. She filed for emancipation from her mother at 17, at which time her father had also abandoned her. She says her relationship with her mother has always been besieged with problems and issues.
2. Courtney Love
She’s one of the most controversial figures in the music scene and if you get to know her family background, a lot of things would fall into place. American rock star Courtney Love was raised by her mother after her parents got divorced when Love was only 5. She had a tumultuous relationship with both her parents and sought legal emancipation from her mother at 16. History repeated itself when it was reported that Love also has a rocky relationship with her own daughter by Kurt Cobain, Frances, the latter having stated that “Twitter should ban my mother.”
1. Lindsay Lohan
Lindsay Lohan had such a bright future ahead of her, showing her immense talent as a child actress in movies like, The Parent Trap, Freaky Friday, and Mean Girls. However, her career started suffering due to her repeated run-ins with the law for alcohol and substance abuse. The public is well-aware of her family problems, from her parents’ shaky marriage and divorce, to her father’s legal battles and public statements against his daughter. She’s allegedly not on speaking terms with her father to this day.
