In Hollywood, it can be tough to make genuine friends. After all, every move is scrutinized by the paparazzi, you’re often competing for the same roles, and the gossip magazines are endlessly speculating (whether correctly or incorrectly) on the status of all your relationships, whether romantic or friendships. That’s a tough environment to sustain a life-long friendship in.
For the most part, celebrities seem to have many friends of the moment – people that they’re captured eating a meal at the latest L.A. hot spot with, people that they’re seen going to the gym with, etc. The bonds never seem to last long. Sure, there are a few celebrities who have kept their Hollywood BFFs for years and years, becoming virtually inseparable. However, those seem to be the exception rather than the rule. When you’re living in the public eye, it can be easy for a little tension between friends to explode when one friend comments to the press about something, or when reality show cameras are trained on you 24/7.
And even amongst those seemingly inseparable BFF relationships, there’s plenty of room for drama – here are 10 former celeb BFFs who are no longer friends, for whatever reason.
10. Paris Hilton and Kim Kardashian
Once Kim Kardashian and her family snagged their own reality show, Keeping Up With The Kardashians, they were catapulted to superstardom. And, while it was her sex tape with Ray J that initially put Kim on the map, her relationship with rapper Kanye West pretty much cemented her spot on the red carpet as she began accompanying him all over the world. However, back when she was younger, before all that happened, she was one of Paris Hilton’s BFFs – and her assistant! Hilton apparently couldn’t handle her former employee becoming more famous than she was, and during a 2008 radio interview, she compared Kim’s famous derriere to “cottage cheese inside a big trash bag.” Well, if those aren’t fighting words, we don’t know what are.
9. Lauren Conrad and Heidi Montag
Lauren Conrad and Heidi Montag are pretty much the dictionary definition of former BFFs who are no longer friends. They met when Conrad made the move to Los Angeles to attend FIDM and became quick friends, and even roommates! Oh, and they were together a ton while filming their reality series The Hills, hitting up all of L.A.’s hottest clubs. However, when Montag’s boyfriend turned husband Spencer Pratt stepped into the picture, things went south – fast. There were scandalous accusations, there were mascara tears, there was yelling, and they’re no longer friends.
8. Madonna and Gwyneth Paltrow
While they may seem like unlikely friends, on paper, it makes sense that Madonna and Gwyneth Paltrow grew quite close. They were both married to Brits, they were both obsessed with staying physically fit, and they were both successful in their respective careers. The duo started hanging out in 1999 and quickly became close friends, with Gwyneth even referring to her BFF as “like an older sister” to her. However, about ten years into their friendship, in 2010, something happened. Neither woman has ever confessed what exactly went down, but Gwyneth soon started asking her Goop readers what to do “when you don’t like a friend anymore.” An insider told Us that apparently Gwyneth “can be jealous and competitive.” Who knows why this friendship ended – perhaps Gwyneth’s first trial of conscious un-BFFing?
7. Demi Lovato and Miley Cyrus
Friends who get their big break on the Disney network together stay together, right? Well, not exactly. Demi Lovato and Miley Cyrus first became friends when they were both starring on Disney channel shows – Sonny With a Chance and Hannah Montana, respectively. They were frequently spotted together and were slowly climbing up the ranks in the entertainment industry. The two seem similar on paper – both ended up sullying their squeaky clean Disney images with some personal issues and choices, and both ended up taking a step back from acting to focus on their music careers. However, they haven’t exactly remained besties. As Lovato said in a 2014 interview, “I don’t have anything in common with her anymore, and I wish her all the best.”
6. Denise Richards and Heather Locklear
Though there are a few years separating them, Denise Richards and Heather Locklear became fast friends and were spotted together countless times enjoying one another’s company. However, things went sour at one point when Richards began dating Lockler’s ex-husband, Richie Sambora. That’s a definite no-no for basically all friends, let alone extremely close friends like these two were. You just don’t date your friend’s ex. However, though many gossiped that the man drama was what created a rift between the two former pals, Richards herself has stated that the friendship was over far before then. “If Heather and I had been friends at that time, I would never have crossed that line,” said Richards. “But we weren’t. The friendship was not salvageable.”
5. Rihanna and Katy Perry
While Rihanna and Katy Perry seem different, both are at the top of the pop world, and it kind of makes sense that they ended up becoming besties at one point. After all, they both put out an endless stream of catchy hits, they both rock unique looks, and they both strut their stuff with confidence on the stage. They were very close from about 2009 to 2012, but their friendship hit a road block when Katy Perry supposedly didn’t approve of Rihanna getting back with Chris Brown. While Perry was pretty much just expressing the same sentiment that literally every one of Rihanna’s fans felt, the Bahamian bombshell didn’t take kindly to her friend’s lack of support. Rihanna skipped Katy’s birthday party, Katy skipped Rihanna’s Halloween party, and while they’re not clawing one another’s eyes out on the red carpet, they’re not exactly hanging out every night either.
4. Paris Hilton and Nicole Richie
Socialites Paris Hilton and Nicole Richie are perhaps the most infamous former BFFs ever. In the early 2000s, they were basically inseparable, and seemed to do everything together – including starring together in a reality television series, The Simple Life. However, in the late 2000s, something caused a rift between the duo. Hilton confirmed the end of their friendship in a 2007 interview, stating that “I will not go into the details of what happened. All I will say is that Nicole knows what she did and that’s all I am ever going to say about it.” Thankfully, the two both remained tactful about the end of their friendship and neither came out to the public with catty or cruel statements about one another. Nowadays, while they’re certainly not as close as they used to be (and likely never will be), they’re civil towards one another.
3. Brody Jenner and Spencer Pratt
Once upon a time, Brody Jenner and Spencer Pratt were two reality television bros, hanging out in the hottest Cali clubs and getting into rich kid antics on their reality show The Princes of Malibu (yeah, it was as cringe-worthy as it sounds). Then, when Jenner began dating Lauren Conrad for a while, he was featured on her far more successful reality show, The Hills, and became a somewhat regular cast member. And, as many may know, Pratt eventually became one of the featured members of the show thanks to his romance with Conrad’s friend turned enemy Heidi Montag. Pratt was increasingly, well, insane, and he was eventually kicked off the show for his violent outbursts, which prompted his former BFF Brody to talk to the media, saying that “lately it’s hard for me – even as someone who used to be best friends with him – to see what’s real and what’s not as far as he goes.”
2. Brad Goreski and Rachel Zoe
While Brad Goreski and Rachel Zoe’s relationship started out as an employee/employer relationship, anyone who has watched The Rachel Zoe Project knows that it was way more than that. Partly due to the fact that Zoe’s team was fairly small at the time, and partly due to the crazy schedule that the two had, they became BFFs, frequently joking around with one another and indulging each other’s fashion fantasies. However, despite the fact that Zoe essentially brought Goreski into the public eye, he soon decided to bite the hand that fed him and venture out on his own in the styling world – taking some of Zoe’s clients with him! The two have allegedly never really spoken since (and we’re sort of on Zoe’s side on this one).
1. Gwyneth Paltrow and Winona Ryder
Gwyneth Paltrow sure has a history of having a tough time keeping friends, and it dates all the way back to the 90s. When Paltrow was a fresh face in Hollywood just getting her start, she was very close with fellow actress Winona Ryder. The two were constantly spotted together, and seemed inseparable. However, things went sour when Gwyneth allegedly stole the lead role in Shakespeare in Love from Ryder. And it wasn’t like they were pitted against one another in a final audition – Paltrow supposedly spotted the script meant for her friend while she was hanging out at Ryder’s house and ended up taking the role. The two don’t outwardly bash one another by name, but Paltrow has made enough snarky comments over the years that we’re pretty sure this friendship is unsalvageable.
