There’s a term in psychology called “the halo effect,” which effectively means that those who are considered beautiful are considered good, including companies, brands and yes, especially women. Halle Berry once said: “Let me tell you something – being thought of as a beautiful woman has spared me nothing in life. No heartache, no trouble.”
Beauty is exactly what causes some men’s testosterone to bubble, igniting the heat of blinded passion in an otherwise cool, well-heeled male. Beauty will drive men to lie, cheat and steal, as seen throughout history from ancient times to our red carpet gladiators of today. From destroying one of the biggest bands in history, to inspiring some of music’s greatest hits, to even dividing a nation.
For all its intoxicating qualities, beauty can be a curse, which Berry knows all too well. Despite being an Academy Award winning actress, beauty queen with millions in the bank, it seems that true love is trouble for the Ohio-born star. She has a string of broken marriages, including her latest with Olivier Martinez, who got into a fight with her ex, Canadian model Gabriel Aubry over his child with Berry. But the most disturbing incident Berry endured was with an unnamed but well-known Hollywood celeb who once beat Berry so hard he left her 80% deaf in one ear.
Halle finished her quote by saying: “Beauty is essentially meaningless and it is always transitory.”
10. Zayn Malik, Gigi Hadid & Joe Jonas
The supermodel of the moment Gigi Hadid, and her now ex, pop star Joe Jonas, were friends for years before they stepped it up a notch and were seen in PDAs everywhere together this past summer. They were tabloid darlings until they decided to pull the plug, blaming conflicting schedules. Waiting in the wings, however, was ex-One Directioner Zayn Malik, who was snapped at various red carpet events with buddy Jonas. Since pictures emerged of Hadid and Malik walking hand-in-hand, Jonas has since deleted the Instagram pic of himself with Malik and Kanye West at a fashion show with the one-time hashtag #squad.
9. Common & Serena Williams & Drake
Smooth rapper Common, isn’t usually known for losing his cool but things turned sour when he and Drake traded lyrical volleys in their tracks back in 2011-2012. Back then the Chicago rapper and the tennis star Serena Williams were an item and Common last year admitted he was uneasy over his girl’s relationship with the Canadian superstar. “For me, I think it was an emotional thing,” Common told VladTV. “Meaning, I was feeling like, at that time, I think it was the Drake-Serena situation — I ain’t know what was going on with that…Unfortunately, the war might have been over a girl, even though at the time I never said that.” The two rappers have since cleared things but now it seems Serena’s back on with the Hotline Bling star.
8. Mick Jagger & Bryan Ferry & Jerry Hall
Texan Jerry Hall turned heads as a jet-setting young supermodel in Europe in the Seventies and dated Bryan Ferry, who was then with glam rock band Roxy Music in the 1970s. Hall was on the cover of the band’s album Siren, and later dated the musician who was 11 years her senior. Then in 1976, Mick Jagger, who was married to Bianca of Studio 54’s white horse fame, invited Ferry and Hall out to dinner. Mick was obsessed with the young model and pursued her relentlessly, even chasing her around a ping-pong table in his lusty glory to kiss him. She conceded and later married Jagger to which the Stones’ frontman said he was just trying to save her from having to change her name to “Jerry Ferry.”
7. Yoko Ono & The Beatles
John Lennon met Japanese artist Yoko Ono in London, in 1966, during a preview of one of her exhibitions and began dating a year later, after Lennon’s wife Cynthia filed for divorce. John and Yoko are best known for their “bed-in for peace” in Amsterdam and collaborating together for the song “Give Peace a Chance.” But many blamed the artist for her break-up of the world’s biggest rock band The Beatles, with her spats with Paul McCartney tabloid fodder. McCartney recently said it was time to let Yoko off the hook and stop pointing the finger at her for the Fab Four’s demise, saying instead that Lennon wanted to do his own thing for a long time anyway.
6. Elvis Presley & Priscilla Presley & Mike Stone
It’s hard to imagine anyone would want to leave The King of Rock n Roll, Elvis Presley, but his marriage to Priscilla would come to a halt, thanks to his love of martial arts. Presley first got into karate when he was in the army and even reached a seven-level black belt before his untimely death in 1977. He encouraged wife Priscilla to take up a hobby and she chose karate as a way to bond with her musician husband. She later began an affair with her karate instructor Mike Stone, which satisfied her womanly needs after “The King” lost sexual interest in her after the birth of their child Lisa Marie.
5. Diddy & Cassie & Ryan Leslie
Before Cassie Ventura sang Me & You to Diddy, she made beautiful music with the song’s producer Ryan Leslie. Diddy heard the now ubiquitous track in the club and wanted to find out who the artist was. After meeting the two of them, Diddy signed the two to his label, Bad Boy Records and offered mentorship to the young artist. Diddy and Cassie, a notoriously private couple, this year seemingly threw the doors wide open to their relationship this year, releasing a NSFW ad for Diddy’s 3am fragrance and also Diddy releasing a video on Instagram showing a party he threw for his lady for her 29th birthday.
4. Elizabeth Taylor & Richard Burton & Eddie Fisher
The gold standard when it comes to tumultuous, all-encompassing Hollywood affairs, Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton’s relationship has become a byword for excess: drinking, sex, arguing, spending, cheating. Before there was Brangelina, there was Liz & Dick on the equally epic and over-budgeted Cleopatra, in 1962. They kept no secret of their budding romance, even to the press, who documented every kiss and argument, both while still married. Taylor was married to Eddie Fisher, who himself was stolen away by Taylor from friend and fellow starlet Debbie Reynolds. Fisher bought a gun when he heard of the affair with Burton and threatened to kill him. He also put a gun to Taylor’s head but said he wasn’t going to kill her because she’s “too beautiful.”
3. Robert Pattinson & Kristen Stewart & Rupert Sanders
They were emos’ Brangelina. Playing each other’s love interest in the teen vampire franchise Twilight, Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart seemingly found overnight success with the first movie and their off-screen romance. Snapped by paparazzi, traipsing the world together, there was nowhere one went, that the other didn’t follow. That is, until the end of the empire and beginning of Stewart’s turn as the ill-fated, apple-loving lead in Snow White & The Huntsman. Stewart was caught red-handed with the film’s director Rupert Sanders, breaking the hearts of Pattinson and fans worldwide who saw them as the perfect couple.
2. Eric Clapton & Pattie Boyd & George Harrison
Two titans of classical rock fought it out for one model and inspired some of history’s greatest songs. Pattie Boyd was famously married to Beatle George Harrison for 11 years, and inspired what some believe to be the greatest rock love song of all time “Something”. But their marriage was on the rocks when she met his pal, guitar god Eric Clapton, who fell in love with her almost instantly, and penned his own odes to Boyd: “Layla” and “Wonderful Tonight.” After splitting with Harrison in 1974, she moved in with Clapton and later married him. The two later divorced over his infidelities and drug habit. Boyd married for a third time this year.
1. Tupac & Faith Evans & Biggie
The biggest love triangle also spurred one of the worst and deadliest feuds in musical history in any genre, hip-hop or otherwise. Faith Evans was married to East Coast rapper Notorious B.I.G., who was also initially friends with West Coast rapper Tupac Shakur. Their friendship was tested when Tupac visited NY in 1994, and was robbed and shot in the head and groin. This later sparked the nationwide feud in which the two rappers traded tirades in their music, with Tupac claiming he had slept with Faith during her marriage to Biggie. The fight ended a few years later with Tupac getting shot in 1996 and later Biggie in 1997.
