Deadpool had a tremendous, record-breaking opening weekend and was well deserving of the overwhelmingly positive reviews. This is a movie that Ryan Reynolds has been trying to get together for nearly a decade, and it turned out to be a huge success for him. Ever since he first played the role (Wade Wilson) in the dreadful 2009 X-Men Origins: Wolverine, fans have been wanting a solo film for the character. Especially since that film completely destroyed the character and demonstrated that they had no idea what they were doing. Reynolds is only able to shine when he first appears in the film displaying his swift sword skills, after that, everything went downhill.
Thankfully, Deadpool’s first solo-outing has redeemed the character and is a perfect translation of the comic book Merc with a Mouth. It’s R-rated, filthy and violent, ridiculous and hilarious, and everything Deadpool is supposed to be. The fact that it broke over $100 million on its opening weekend, in February, totally solidified its chances of getting a sequel. The studio has already confirmed Deadpool 2, with Reynolds, the director and writers all set to return. But now, there is a bigger question to be asked, which is, who are they going to cast as Cable in the sequel?
Nathan “Cable” Summers is the son of Cyclops in the comics, and is pretty much a time-travelling warrior. As a Mutant, Cable has the ability to perform telekinesis, telepathy, technopathy and is an expert marksman. Deadpool and Cable have their own comic series together and serve as the perfect “buddy-cop” duo, with Cable as the straight man and Deadpool, the exact opposite. Cable has been confirmed for the Deadpool sequel, and there are certainly a list of Hollywood actors who could take on the role.
10. Ron Perlman
Ron Perlman has been around for quite a while and is probably best known for playing Hellboy – at least in the comic book world. To everyday audiences, they’re most familiar with his role on Sons of Anarchy. The guy is a very solid actor, and is certainly old enough to play Cable. The physicality wouldn’t be a problem at all, considering he’s done action in the Hellboy movies, and the dude is pretty ripped. Will he actually be cast in the role? Probably not to be perfectly honest, but Perlman could play Cable, if he were ever to win the role.
9. Henry Rollins
Henry Rollins didn’t start out as an actor, he originally the frontman for California hardcore punk band Black Flag in the ’80s. But Rollins is also a motivational speaker, writer, journalist, publisher, activist and has an acting career. He’s been in some movies as well as some television shows, but never anything on the scale of Deadpool. This would be giving him ridiculously huge exposure as an actor, if he landed the role of Cable. He’s got the hair, the right age and certainly is fit enough for the physicality. He could serve as a pretty decent Cable in the sequel.
8. Sean Bean
It’s pretty much a foregone conclusion that Sean Bean would not be killed off if he took on this role. The English actor, who appeared in the first season of HBO’s Game of Thrones, has been acting for 20+ years. He’s a stellar actor, and could pull off the role of Cable if it were given to him. Bean has the right look for the character and would just need to add some gray to his hair. He’s usually in serious roles in dramas or action movies, so seeing him in this hyper-comedic, silly comic book world would be quite interesting and a nice change of pace for his career.
7. Jeffrey Dean Morgan
For comic book fans, Jeffery Dean Morgan may forever be The Comedian in Watchmen in their eyes. As far as the “beefiness” goes, Morgan certainly seems to have the right body build for Cable. He’s been able to show a little bit of range, mostly doing dramatic work, though his funny side is not showcased very often. Assuming he has one. Cable doesn’t need to be funny, he’s the straight man, but somebody with comedic timing while playing the straight man would be perfect. Is Morgan the guy for the job? He better get on Fox’s radar pretty quick if he is.
6. Dolph Lundgren
Dolph Lundgren is a classic ’80s action movie actor, basically known for being a big brute. He also played an inferior version of The Punisher once upon a time, and everybody remembers his villainous role in Rocky IV. The Swedish actor is 6’5″ and if he dyed his hair gray, he could pull off a convincing Cable. Although, even if he doesn’t get this role, Lundgren won’t be missing out on anything, as he has a slew of movies coming out in 2016 and 2017, including Kindergarten Cop 2. But since he is usually known for playing bad guys, watching him play someone like Cable opposite Deadpool would be a unique departure for the actor.
5. Ray Stevenson
Although The Walking Dead‘s Jon Bernthal will now be known as The Punisher once he makes his debut on the second season of Daredevil this March, Ray Stevenson once took on the role in 2008. His Frank Castle in Punisher: War Zone was a big improvement from Thomas Jane. Stevenson is 6’4″ and definitely looks fairly intimidating, and he’s certainly convincing blowing away bad guys with various firearms. Maybe he could punch a hole in Deadpool’s face, much like he did in Punisher: War Zone. That would be the ultimate meta-joke.
4. Mel Gibson
Yes, even Mel Gibson, for all the controversy he’s created, could pull off the role of Cable. Gibson has always been a solid actor, and continued to be even after his fall from grace. Some have always wanted to see Gibson play Wolverine, so maybe seeing him play Cable instead could serve as a nice substitute. He’s pretty convincing at playing crazy and it’s safe to assume he can pull off holding a straight face while Deadpool annoys him to no end. Gibson also has experience in the buddy-cop genre, with the Lethal Weapon franchise. This is territory that he knows very well.
3. Kurt Russell
Snake Plissken playing Cable? Well that would definitely be worth checking out! Kurt Russell has had somewhat of a resurgence in his acting career lately, thanks to Quentin Tarantino. His roles in Death Proof and The Hateful Eight have brought his charisma back to cinemas and it’s very nice to see. One interesting factor here is that Russell was rumored to be talking with James Gunn, director of Guardians of the Galaxy, for a role in the sequel to the 2014 Marvel film. Guardians of the Galaxy 2 has just begun production, and it’s not clear whether or not Russell has accepted the role or not. If he has, maybe he wouldn’t have time to play Cable in Deadpool 2.
2. Jon Hamm
Well, Jon Hamm is now officially done with Mad Men, so perhaps it’s time to start picking up more of those film roles. Hamm has a sense of humor, he’s appeared more than once on 30 Rock and played a pretty ridiculous tool in Bridesmaids. Seeing him play alongside a sharp comedic talent like Ryan Reynolds would be something to witness. Hamm is another actor who could see quite a boost in his acting career by starring in a high-profile comic book franchise such as this. This would also be his first role that would require a lot of physicality.
1. Stephen Lang
In all honesty, it will probably be Stephen Lang who ends up snatching the role of Cable. If you don’t remember Mr. Lang or have never seen him before, he played the main villain in James Cameron’s Avatar in 2009. The man is pretty much the spitting image of the comic book character, and his name has been brought up the most in relation to Cable. Of all the actors on the list, Lang has the best chance of being offered the role and taking it. He has even gone on record saying he’s ready for it.

As much as the Deadpool movie was a dream come true for Ryan Reynolds and so many fans, casting Stephen Lang as Cable would be just as special, for so many people. In fact, Stephen Lang will probably already have been cast in the role by the time you read this.
