Is there any role in Hollywood that is more iconic than James Bond, a man so badass he is identified by 3 numbers and an iconic drink order? The role has changed actors’ careers and has been a staple of the big screen for generations. Regardless of your thoughts on Daniel Craig as Bond, everyone has their own ‘Bond’ who they feel is the best one so far. Perhaps you liked the sly edge that Connery brought to the performances. Perhaps instead you appreciated the brash rawness that comes from Craig’s portrayal.
With the release of Spectre, Daniel Craig has come out and stated that this may in fact be his last film as the super spy. As one would expect from the Internet, there is rampant speculation on who will become the new James Bond. Spectre marks the 4th depiction of Bond for Daniel Craig, and while the original casting choice was not overwhelmingly positive, Craig’s films are a success both critically and financially. The premier for Craig, Casino Royale, was the highest for any James Bond film. That number has since been surpassed by the 3rd instalment Skyfall, which brought in $1.8 billion internationally.
There is no doubt that there is a huge buzz for Spectre. With all eyes on Bond right now, it is only natural that it will lead to the speculation of who gets to fill Craig’s shoes. While we don’t know who the next Bond will be, it never hurts to guess! Plus, if any of these turn into a reality, guess who looks like a genius: This guy!
10. Jason Statham
There would be no doubting Statham‘s physical capabilities. Statham has looked in excellent shape well befitting of an action star in many films. The problem with Statham is that for as much of a Bond as he could be, he would work even better as a villain or henchman. I do believe he needs a place in the future Bond films. Jason has his experience with crime films, he’s all over the action scene and he is absolutely hilarious when the script calls for it (such as in Spy). I would love to see him face off against Bond, in a similar role given to Dave Bautista in the upcoming Spectre.
9. Clive Owen
Clive Owen is one of my favourite actors in Hollywood. When he was given the chance to work with a heavy drama, such as the film Children of Men, Owen knocked it out of the park. Anyone who questions if Clive can handle himself as a convincing action star with a pistol also needs not be concerned after watching his gun-toting action film Shoot Em Up, which as you guessed by the title, involves a great deal of shooting. I am convinced he would have both the suave charm of Bond, combined with the action pedigree to lead to some fantastic scenes.
8. Tom Hardy
If you do not know who Tom Hardy is by now, I am almost jealous because you have some fantastic films to watch for the first time. Tom’s stock is continuing to rise as audiences were blown away by the sheer scale of Fury Road this past summer. Hardy’s no stranger to big project roles, as he also was menacing as Bane in the 3rd Batman instalment, The Dark Knight Returns. Hardy also showed his ability to help captivate audiences in the blockbuster success Inception only a few years ago. For anyone still doubting his commitment to acting, watch his transformation and dedication to get into peak shape for Warrior in 2011.
7. Michael Fassbender
I am absolutely biased because the newest X-Men series is one of my favorites of all of the comic reboots. That hopefully does not compromise my view too much when I state that Fassbender would be a fantastic James Bond. Cold and cunning, Fassbender has the added benefit of his Magneto experience if things get too hectic! Fassbender has continued to display his ability to take over the screen that should only aid in the confidence people hold towards him as Bond. Fassbender’s stock may never be higher, as his newest film, depicting the life of Steve Jobs, is currently being advertised absolutely everywhere.
6. Jude Law
Jude Law is a fantastic actor. Being nominated for two different Academy Awards, Law has had a career that has spanned over a decade and several genres. While it a smaller role, Law was absolutely hilarious (and somewhat badass) in the 2013 film Spy. While some of Law’s biggest films, such as the 2001 classic Enemy At The Gates are behind him, he still shows a passion for acting that could lead to an outstanding and different version of James Bond.
5. Gerard Butler
The only downfall of Gerard Butler being the next Bond, is that he probably won’t be able to kick anyone into a hole like in 300. Thankfully, for Butler’s sake, he has an extensive film catalogue that shows he is not afraid to make things violent. Butler has also shown some comedic chops in films such as The Ugly Truth, which could be utilized to create a more relaxed James Bond. Butler also showed his ability to keep the testosterone and adrenaline flowing for an entire film in 2009’s Law Abiding Citizen.
4. Christian Bale
Bale is no stranger to the brightest of lights in Hollywood. You don’t get much bigger than being Batman, except maybe being James Bond. It’s like being Batman, except you don’t have to cover your face and you get all the ladies! Bale is an outstanding actor who has shown a tremendous dedication to his craft. Largely considered one of the biggest method actors in Hollywood, Bale’s dedication can be seen through examples such as his extreme weight loss for the film The Machinist. There is no doubt in my mind that Bale would step up his already tremendous skill if given the opportunity to transform another iconic character.
3. Liam Neeson
If you need Bond to get any more badass, just threaten to take his daughter and send Liam Neeson on the case! Only problem is, I bet if you give Neeson access to Q, he’d have the film over in 10 minutes. Despite being 63, Liam Neeson has re-emerged in the past 5 years as a bonafide action star, and even if Bond is perhaps out of his reach, his success leads to many feeling like Neeson is still one of the top action stars. Of course, fame is no stranger to Neeson who has been appearing in films since 1978! Perhaps the true testament to Neeson’s age is the fact that he was considered for Bond…around 18 years ago. It is rumoured that Neeson was one of the actors being courted, only to turn down the role at the request of his then-fiance.
2. Hugh Jackman
Hugh Jackman is an absolute badass, and if you don’t believe me, just watch him chop up some fools in absolutely any of the Wolverine films he’s done. Spoiler alert, he’s done a lot of them. Jackman has recently come out and stated that he turned down the role of James Bond, roughly 8 years ago. This was also around the time that X-Men 2 was being filmed. While he has turned it down before, Jackman has stated that he would consider taking the role if offered again. Given his pedigree as an outstanding actor, an action superstar and a great singer, it would be hard to not at least pass a script his way.
1. Idris Elba
Idris Elba is widely considered to be one of the leading options for the next James Bond. Elba would be the first non-caucasian to take on the role and his acting talent cannot be denied. Idris has been all over the big screen in the past few years, with acting roles including but not limited to both Thor films. Idris Elba is also absolutely outstanding in his role on the hit drama The Wire. Anyone that is doubting his skill to be Bond, would not be for long after seeing what Elba is capable of with a good script. 3 Golden Globe nominations for best actor also add more credentials to his acting prowess. The Bond franchise would, and perhaps will be, in great hands with Idris Elba.
