10 Actors and Actresses Who Shy Away From Marriage

For many people, getting married today isn’t as big of a deal as it was decades ago. It used to basically be frowned upon if you were in your 40s and still single, but not getting married seems to be the new black. Many celebrities get hitched way too young and then end up getting divorced before they’re 30. There are other celebs who are addicted to matrimony and end up have several exes. Then, there are the movie stars who decide, for whatever reason, not to get married at all. Some have kids with significant others, but don’t feel compelled to make the union official. Basically, some celebs are simply not the marrying kind.

10. John Cusack

The Chicago native and loveable rom-com star never speaks about his love life, but he’s been linked to actresses Minnie Driver, Lily Taylor, Neve Campbell and more recently, actress Jodi Lyn O’ Keefe. Cusack told Total Film, “A lot of women who meet me, aren’t meeting me. They’re meeting their ambition or they’re meeting their relationship to a celebrity.” Cusack’s vagueness and mystery probably makes women want him more.

9. Kevin Spacey

Reports have swirled for years that just because Spacey’s never married he’s gay, but he’s adamantly denied the rumors. “I’ve just never believed in pimping my personal life out for publicity,” Spacey told Gotham Magazine. “I’m not interested in doing it. Never will do it. They can gossip all they want; they can speculate all they want. I just happen to believe that there’s a public life and there’s a private life. Everybody has a right to a private life no matter what their profession is.” He may be private, but he brought his supposed girlfriend to the Oscars in 2000 and thanked her during his Best Actor acceptance speech.

8. Al Pacino

Al Pacino dated Diane Keaton but didn’t father any children with her—that was reserved for two other women. He had a daughter in 1989, with acting coach Jan Tarrant, then had twin sons with Beverly D’Angelo, in 2001. The couple called it quits in 2003. Currently, the septuagenarian’s dating a woman who is 40 years his junior, with no plans to marry.

The Grammy-winning singer dated actor, Owen Wilson for a spell and then moved on to a highly visible relationship with cyclist Lance Armstrong, whom divorced his wife to be with Crow. In 2003, Crow and Armstrong began their romantic relationship and got engaged in September of 2005, but the relationship ended in February 2006. Armstrong told the Daily Mail, “She wanted marriage, she wanted children; and not that I didn’t want that, but I didn’t want that at that time because I had just gotten out of a marriage, I’d just had kids.” That didn’t stop Armstrong from having a kid with another woman in 2009, though. After the breakup, Crow had bigger issues to deal with, like battling breast cancer. The fleetingness of life caused her to adopt a baby boy in 2007, and another one in 2010.

6. Diane Keaton

Getting married was just never in the cards for the Oscar winner and author, Diane Keaton but she’s sure had a slew of high-profile romances with Hollywood’s best actors. Keaton dated Woody Allen in the ’70s and starred in eight of his films from 1971-1993. (Her performance in Allen’s Annie Hall won her an Oscar.) In the late ’70s and early ’80s, she moved on to Warren Beatty, and on-and-off in the ’70s and ’80s, she dated her Godfather costar Al Pacino. “I don’t think he was really that interested. And I don’t think a long-term happy marriage would be easy for him,” she told a reporter about possibly marrying Pacino. When Keaton hit 50, instead of deciding she needed a man, she adopted a daughter and a few years later, adopted a son. “That concept is such nonsense–the idea that if you never marry you’re destroyed,” Keaton told The Telegraph. “I can’t imagine marrying now, that’s not happening.”

5. Keanu Reeves

One reason The Matrix star hasn’t made it down the aisle could be related to a life marred with tragedy. Jennifer Syme, Reeves girlfriend in the late-’90s, got pregnant and delivered a stillborn baby in 1999. The grief tore the couple apart but they remained friends. Eighteen months later, Syme, who was drunk and not wearing a seat belt, died in a car crash on her way to Marilyn Manson’s house. Reeves has privately dated other women, but his personal tragedy probably keeps them at arm’s length. “I want to get married,” he told Parade Magazine a few years ago. “I want to have kids. That’s at the top of the mountain. I’ve got to climb the mountain first. I’ll do it. Just give me some time.”

The blonde bombshell dated a string of men long-term and is considered to be a serial monogamist, but she has yet to find the right guy. Diaz romanced Matt Dillon (an older man) from 1995-1998, Jared Leto from 1999-2003, Justin Timberlake (a younger man) 2003-2006, and Alex Rodriguez from 2010-2011. Diaz told Esquire on marriage, “It just wasn’t the thing I was drawn to. I certainly didn’t want it in my 20s. Or my 30s.” She’s also stated in interviews that she “was never drawn to being a mother” either.

3. Winona Ryder

At 19 years old, Winona Ryder famously got engaged to bad boy Johnny Depp, who was seven years older than her. From 1989-1993, Ryder and Depp were Hollywood’s “It Couple” and epitomized young Hollywood in love. Depp was so committed to his Edward Scissorhands co-star that he got “Winona Forever” tattooed on his arm. The union didn’t last and the two went their separate ways; Depp altered the tattoo to say “Wino Forever.” Following the breakup, Ryder dated a string of musicians and actors, including Dave Pirner of Soul Asylum and Matt Damon. Now in her 40s, she hasn’t quite sworn off marriage. “I very much believe in marriage. I hope to only be married once, which is why I’ve never been married. But I am a strong believer. My parents have been together for 40 years and are still very much in love, so I think I have very high standards,” the actress told OK! Magazine.

Considering Winfrey had a history of abusive romantic relationships growing up, it’s no surprise she’s never quite taken the plunge. She dated former Entertainment Tonight reporter, John Tesh and briefly dated Roger Ebert. But in the mid-’80s, she met businessman, Stedman Graham and they’ve been together ever since. They got engaged in 1992 but haven’t wed. “I’m not a traditional woman and I haven’t had a traditional life, and I think that had Stedman and I gotten married, we certainly wouldn’t have stayed married,” she told a reporter. “The very idea of what it means to be a wife and the responsibility and sacrifice that carries—I wouldn’t have held that very well.”

The lothario dated model, Elizabeth Hurley for 13 years, from 1987-2000 but he didn’t consider marrying her. Since then, Hugh Grant’s not only dated a bevy of women, he’s also fathered three kids with two different woman. Between 2011 and 2013, the fifty-something actor had two kids with a much younger woman, Tinglan Hong, and while she was pregnant with their second child, he impregnated a Swedish television producer. So, that makes three kids within a 15-month span. He may not want to ever get married, but that doesn’t mean he has no family values.
