Breakups happen every day. And it seems that in Hollywood they happen even faster, which is sort of understandable with the magnifying lens that is the media on them at all times. But there are some relationships we really care about, as if we know the couple, as if we have been there for all their ups and downs. Sometimes, we care more about these celebrity couples than people we do know in real life. And, when they breakup, it’s like they broke up with us too – the unseen third wheel of their relationship.
We take these breakups so hard because we put these people on a pedestal. We look at their relationships and model our own after them. We hope that we will find love like theirs. And, when they break up, we are lost. Here’s our list of breakups that we’re still not over. If these celebrity couples can’t make it work, who can?
15. Vanessa Hudgens and Zac Efron
This was one of those relationships that people just loved. After the two co-starred on the High School Musical movies, we also fell in love with them. They were so cute, just trying to figure out Hollywood together. They were everything you wanted from Disney Stars who dated in the early 2000s.
And then they split, and it broke the hearts of millennials all around the world. Oh, and it gave hope to those who lust after Efron (which is everyone, if I’m not mistaken).
While he has made comments about how he regrets doing the HSM films, I think we all know that, deep down, he treasures those memories and that time in his life. Also, we are all aware that he wouldn’t be the star that he is today without those movies, which is just a fact. Thankfully, he posted an old photo with Hudgens and other cast members, saying how he cherished that time in his life. And while this isn’t him addressing his undying devotion to Hudgens – it is a step in the right direction.
14. Jennifer Garner and Ben Affleck
This breakup feels like the girl next door and the boy next door broke up. Who didn’t want these two to be together? Honestly, after the mess that was Affleck‘s relationship with J-Lo, this seemed so much more stable. And it never appeared like a hot and heavy type of relationship. It always seemed like one of those well thought out, mature, relationships.
But, after a year of separation, they still haven’t filed their divorce yet. Which seems a little strange. They also still live on the same property. To be fair, these actors in Hollywood have so much land – it isn’t like he is in the room next to hers. But still, with how pleasant these two are with one another, and how good they are with co-parenting, there is nothing but speculation that they could one day get back together.
13. Gwen Stefani and Gavin Rossdale
This was a match made in 90s rock heaven. Stefani and Rossdale met in 1995, a different time in our country, an easier time. While both their bands were on tour together, they got together and married seven years later. Together, they had three children. Everything seemed to be a 90s dream – until it wasn’t.
They split last summer, after if had been found out that Rossdale had been caught cheating on Stefani with their nanny. To make things more scandalous, the nanny got pregnant. Crazy right? I thought these were rock stars, not soap stars.
But Stefani has been moving on with Blake Shelton, whom she met on the set of The Voice. Musically, it seems off – a country star and a 90s pop rock star, but it looks like it’s working out well.
12. Miranda Lambert and Blake Shelton
The breakup heard all around the country world. These two seemed to be a perfect country couple, singing songs about one another, and just being cute in their flannel and cowboy boots. Honestly, when you think about outdoor weddings and country music, you think of them, don’t you? I know I do.
Their split was a huge shock, as are most breakups when both parties are singers and often sing together, or write songs about one another. And there was no difference during the split, as Shelton described his album, If I’m Honest, as a breakup album. And, while Lambert doesn’t call her album following their divorce a breakup album, it is a lot more sombre and vulnerable than any other album she has done.
Both Shelton and Lambert are currently seeing other people, and they seem to be happy. There probably aren’t any signs of getting back together. So I think we’ll just have to listen to old songs to rekindle that type of magic.
11. Adam Brody and Rachel Bilson
This is one relationship I will never get over. If I couldn’t be with Adam Brody (who was my first celebrity crush – and still is, to be honest), then at least he was with Rachel Bilson. Their chemistry on The OC was simply undeniable, and they were easily the best couple on the show. The fact that they were dating off-screen sent teenage girls in the early 2000s into a tizzy. We loved it. We lived for it. Until they broke up.
It wasn’t messy. It just sort of happened. And our hearts broke with them. But I would be lying if I said I didn’t secretly hope that one day they would get back together. And I know that they are both happily married and have children now, but I don’t care. Seth and Summer forever.
10. Emma Stone and Andrew Garfield
To be honest, I hadn’t realized that these two split until I did the research. To say I’m upset is an understatement. They just seem so perfect for one another. The way they looked at one another is exactly how you want your significant other to look at you. The way they trolled the paparazzi was that of brilliance. And they were just hilarious and cute together, and I know this happened over a year ago, but I am not over it.
This is one of those couples that didn’t really say much to the media about one another and weren’t too into dishing their dirty laundry. Most articles about their breakup are vague, saying how it just wasn’t working. No duh, it wasn’t working. No relationship that is working ends in breaking up.
The good thing about these two being vague is that there is so much room for speculation – especially about them getting back together. Hopefully, the world will be restored soon, I mean they will make up.
9. Jordin Sparks And Jason Derulo
Guys, this one is upsetting. These two are R&B singers; who knows more about love and relationships than R&B singers? Seriously, it seemed like these two were totally going to make it. He wrote a song about her called “Marry Me” for God’s sake. If that isn’t serious, then I literally have no idea what is.
Unfortunately, their breakup was kind of messy. She claimed he didn’t buy the car he gifted her with and was less than polite when she told him to come pick up his stuff. He seems to be happy with being single now – not too many sad songs about breaking up; that’s for sure. But Sparks, on the other hand, definitely wrote songs about him, dealing with the breakup in a different way. Hopefully, she’ll start writing some more songs about love, or even loving being single, because, while the slam songs are entertaining, I think we all like her better when she sings about love.
8. Nina Dobrev And Ian Somerhalder
For those of you who don’t watch Vampire Diaries (which honestly, you’re missing out on, because it is teen drama gold), these two co-stars were each other’s love interests for a couple of seasons. But their chemistry was undeniable from the start – even when Dobrev’s character was dating Somerhalder’s character’s brother.
When I found out they were dating in real life, it just felt right, like the planets were aligning. That’s what every fan of a television show wants right? For the two beautiful co-stars to date in real life? I know I always want that. It’s got to be hard to play your characters and not fall in love with the other person.
When I found out these two split, it broke my heart a little bit. And, while they worked together for a little bit afterwards, Dobrev decided to leave Vampire Diaries in 2015. Obviously, there were rumors speculating that she left due to their breakup.
7. Amy Pohler and Will Arnette
This one hits me hard. I love Amy Pohler, and would follow her to hell and back. When I found out that these two were married, I thought it was perfect – a match made in comedy heaven. Leslie Knope and Gob Bluth are together? That is perfect. There is no better match.
That’s a lie. There is a better match. Because after ten years and two kids, these two split.
And, while Pohler gets very real about her divorce in her memoir, Yes Please, it seems that it wasn’t one of the messiest divorces in Hollywood. They still have custody of their two sons together, and seem like they are still friends, despite everything that happened. And, while they are civil, there is a part of me that gets a little upset when I think about how these two split, wishing we could go back to the mid-2000s and have them be perfect again.
6. Kourtney Kardashian and Scott Disick
This isn’t a surprise at all. Their relationship has been highly publicized from the get-go. Each time they had a fight, each time her family weighed in on their relationship, every tiny detail of their relationship was magnified by KUWTK. I can only imagine how much stress that must put on two people.
The couple had been together for nearly a decade, with three children together. To be honest, despite all their flaws, I always liked them together. Maybe it was because of their personalities, or because Scott is kind of crazy. Either way, their breakup was just as publicized as their relationship – which probably made it seem messier than it actually was.
But the good news is that, if you really loved them together, you can always catch reruns of old shows with them still together, and try and relive the magic. But I think we all know it will never be the same.
5. Lady Gaga and Taylor Kinney
I was rooting for this couple, and I still am. Technically, they say that they are on a break because they are both working on their careers, and it’s hard to be together right now. But it’s just a break, right? People come together after breaks, right? God, I hope so.
They’re such an adorable couple. And Gaga was sort of all over the place before she was with Kinney. She seemed so much more stable with him in her life. When she posted that photo of them, talking about the break, it seemed hopeful. Neither is slamming the other. No one is going around on a crazy bender, writing sad songs, and sleeping with copious numbers of random people. Here’s hoping these two crazy kids can work it out.
4. Demi Lovato and Wilmer Valderrama
My heart can’t take this one, guys. They were together for six years and, yes, that means they started dating when she was just 18. Before Demi, Wilmer had dated plenty of young starlets right after they turned 18 – but this time was different.
She has posted photos of him on social media, saying how he was there for her in the darkest times in her life, how he saved her. And no, I’M not crying! YOU’RE crying! That’s just so beautiful.
They’ve told the media that they broke up because the romance had kind of fizzled away, and they were just better as friends. To be honest, while I’m pretty upset about this, I’m glad this isn’t one of the messy breakups on this list. I really don’t think my heart could handle that.
3. Pete Wentz and Ashlee Simpson
If you were into emo or pop-punk in the early 2000s, this was THE couple. You were either jealous of Ashlee Simpson or Pete Wentz. Either way, this was a serious #realtionshipgoals, long before that was a term.
After three years of marital bliss, and one child, they called it quits. In an interview with Howard Stern, Wentz goes into detail about that time and how it all unravelled. He accounts it as a low point in his life, after his band, Fall Out Boy, took a hiatus in 2010, and he had sort of an identity crisis.
The two have remained civil while co-parenting their son. They have both moved on to new relationships. But we will never forget when they were one of the most sought after couples in pop punk history.
2. Rachel McAdams and Ryan Gosling
The two co-stars of The Notebook made millions of women’s dreams come to life when they started dating. And it’s no surprise that they started dating after the movie – how could you act those scene and not fall in love with the other person? We all fell in love with them after that movie; that’s why this breakup is that much harder.
When asked about the breakup in 2007, Gosling told people that his relationship with McAdams was more beautiful than The Notebook. That is a big statement. A statement that makes me wish, somehow, after all this time, they would just get back together. We, as a country, deserve a love story as beautiful as this one. Maybe one day, when they are older, they will find each other again. One can only hope, though.
1. Justin Timberlake and Britney Spears
I know this happened back in 2002, but I don’t know if I will ever be over it. When they dated it was a magical time in our country – it felt as if anything could happen. If these two artists, who were arguably the most popular singers in the world at the time, could be together, then what couldn’t we do?
The two met back in the 90s when they were both on the Mickey Mouse Club, which is honestly just adorable. When they dated, both of them seemed to at the very top of the pop world (even though both of them are, realistically, still just as popular as they were back in 1999).
Unfortunately, the denim wearing tag team split in 2002, despite their cute nicknames, and Britney’s cute doodles of his name in her Crossroads notebook. It’s unfortunate, to say the least. If these two couldn’t work it out, who can?
