15 Biggest Celebrity Breakups Of 2016 So Far

via www.lessentiel.lu

Hollywood is infamous for its endless amount of failed marriages and relationships. Whether it lasts five days or five years, up in the hills it was doomed from the start. Sadly, successful romances are far from common in the entertainment industry. Whenever a new couple hookup, the countdown has already begun, tracking their inevitable end.

The collaboration of busy schedules and long distances spent apart have been the reason for many splits. If it’s not work, it’s the side play with someone other than their partner that has many couples pulling the plug on their short-lived romance. Since couples meet the majority of the time on the sets of their projects, things can get awkward from zero to 60 once the spark dies out. Seeing as the exes can cross paths in the future within the relatively small entertainment industry, many choose to break up amicably in order to establish a professional and friendly relationship. Or they profit from calling out their ex-partner through song… cough, cough, Taylor Swift.

While there have been a few relationships that have withstood the Hollywood curse, such as Kyra Sedgwick and Kevin Bacon, not all couples experience that same success. More often than not, celebrity couples suffer the inevitable demise. With the end of 2016 on the horizon, it will be interesting to see which couples will be ringing in the new year with a single status.

In the meantime, gather your favorite post-breakup snacks and read about the 15 celebrity couples who have already called in quits in 2016.

It’s officially splitsville for James McAvoy and Anne-Marie Duff after nine years of marriage. The couple met on the set of their television comedy series Shameless in 2003 and were married in a quiet ceremony three years later. The X-Men actor and his actress wife appeared to be one of the strongest couples in the industry, despite keeping a low profile on the red carpet and out in public. The former couple previously stated that they didn’t like to show up to many events together in order to rejoice in having a normal life. In May the pair announced in an official statement their decision to divorce and their plan to co-parent their young son together. They expressed their sadness for the split, but also emphasized an amicable separation in their statement: “We enter this next phase with continued friendship, love and respect for one another and the shared focus of caring for our son.”

Following the devastating loss of Glee co-star and boyfriend Cory Monteith, Lea Michele was quick to start up a new romance with model Matthew Paetz. The couple met on the set of her “On My Way” music video and shared an instant attraction. For nearly two years, the pair attended numerous red carpet events and music festivals together. Despite looking in love while on steamy vacations and date nights, the couple apparently wasn’t on the same page. While the 29-year-old singer and actress was hoping for a wedding proposal, Paetz dumped her out of the blue. The Scream Queens actress was blindsided by his rejection and months prior to the split she vocalized her love for Paetz and how she was sure Monteith would approve of their relationship. With no plans of reconciliation, Michele spent a few months enjoying her newly single status before being photographed with actor and Dimension 404 co-star, Robert Buckley. Unfortunately, that duo only lasted a few months before mutually splitting.

Much to the relief of the entire female population, Zac Efron was officially put back on the market following the split from girlfriend Sami Miro. The couple dated for almost two years before the breakup was confirmed after fans noticed that the 28-year-old actor erased all signs of his relationship with the model on social media. Efron deleted all photos of Miro from his Instagram and even unfollowed her on Twitter. Throughout their relationship, the duo shared some pictures on their social media accounts documenting their time together, including their trip to Japan and Vietnam in March. Rumors circulated that, while he was filming the Baywatch reboot in Tybee Island, Miro cheated on Efron while attending Coachella. Known for keeping his personal life quiet, the actor has yet to comment on the status and support the claims of infidelity as the reason for the breakup. Either way, he’ll have no trouble finding a new girl to hang on his arm.

It’s no surprise that the youngest member of the Kardashian clan would make headlines for her romantic endeavors. From the very beginning this relationship has been extremely uncomfortable and filled with drama. At just 16, Kylie Jenner began seeing the then 25-year-old rapper following his split from his fiancé and son’s mother. While the pair denied the fact that they were together and insisted they were just friends, they didn’t make an effort to hide the amount of time they spent together from the public. The inappropriate age gap between the two was a hot topic among pop-culture sites, as new photographs documented a serious relationship. Following her 18th birthday, the couple called it quits after reports of Tyga cheating on Jenner began to surface. The breakup only lasted a few months before they reunited and Jenner donned an apparent engagement ring on her faux nail ring finger. In May, the pair once again called it quits. Despite their apparent split, the aspiring beauty entrepreneur has continued to refer to Tyga as her “husband.” Who knows what will happen next with this roller-coaster of a relationship.

After nearly ten years of marriage, Casey Affleck and Summer Phoenix confirmed their separation in an official statement. The former couple were introduced by her brother, Joaquin Phoenix, when he and Affleck were filming To Die For in 2006. After many years of flirty friendship and speaking highly of each other in interviews, the two eventually began dating and were engaged three years later during the Christmas holiday. Despite a decade of marriage and multiple years of the friendship, the actors have decided that the best thing for their family was to part ways. Their camp confirms that it was an amicable separation and the two will remain close friends in order to co-parent their young children: Indiana, 11, and Atticus, 8. This isn’t the first separation in the Affleck family. Last year, Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner announced their plans to divorce after a decade of marriage.

After meeting on the set of the film adaptation of Jack Kerouac’s On the Road, the co-stars began getting to know one another off camera. Garrett Hedlund and Kirsten Dunst made their first official public appearance together in January of 2012 and even shared a home in Los Angeles during their time together. But after over four years of dating, the actors split despite the fact that the two appeared to be heading towards the altar. While the reason for their breakup remains a mystery, the 33-year-old actress never shied away from talking about her former beau in interviews. Dunst confessed in a past interview with Red U.K. that she had severe baby fever after she learned two of her friends were expecting. Following their breakup, Dunst has recently been spotted around town with her Fargo co-star Jesse Plemons.

Even in Hollywood, couples can’t escape the pressure of time commitments. Actors Jaimie Alexander and Peter Facinelli seemed to be making their relationship work when they got engaged last year, but the demands of conflicting schedules led to their eventual split. Busy with her major hit show Blindspot, Alexander and Facinelli were unable to spend enough time together seeing he was hard at work with his role on Supergirl. According to their official statement, there is no ill feelings towards one another. “Due to conflicting family and work commitments on opposite coasts, and after much consideration, Peter and Jaimie have chosen to part ways amicably and remain good friends.”

The pair were last seen publicly in January at the Golden Globes, where they shared a kiss on the red carpet and revealed that they haven’t had time to arrange their wedding due to their hectic work schedules.

In true Iggy Azalea fashion, she is not staying silent regarding her breakup with NBA player Nick Young. The rapper took to Twitter to share the reason behind the split, “I broke up with Nick because I found out he had brought other women into our home while I was away and caught them on the security footage.” Her year-long engagement to the basketball star was filled with ups and downs, but following the break, she was hit with more devastating news regarding his infidelity. From a previous relationship Young shares a son with his ex-girlfriend- who he has been seeing behind Azalea’s back throughout their time together. Following the end to his engagement with Azalea, sources revealed that his baby mama was pregnant once again with his child. Azalea was completely blindsided by the news as she was informed via E! News when they tweeted about the scandal. Ouch.

After more than three decades together, it came as quite the shock when Sharon and Ozzy Osbourne announced that they were calling it quits back in early May. The pair wed in 1982, after she was introduced to the heavy metal rocker by her father when she was just 18. In the midst of the drama, Sharon wasn’t shy about discussing the alleged affair rumors and her separation from her husband on her show The Talk. She addressed his cheating and confirmed that Ozzy has been in a dark place over the last year and a half by using alcohol and prescription drugs. The two were estranged for a couple of months until the matriarch admitted that despite their rock ‘n roll love affair suffering unfaithfulness, they were back together and working on their marriage. Sharon revealed on her show that she has forgiven him, but hasn’t forgotten: “I just can’t think of my life without him. Even though he is a dog. He’s a dirty dog. So there we are. He’s going to pay big.”

For six long years, it seemed as if the pop singer and her actor beau were headed towards a “happily-ever after” ending together, not ending their relationship. After meeting in 2010, the couple initially kept private about their romance before going public around 2014. Despite the 13-year age gap, the pair weren’t shy about displaying the love shared between them. Whether it was social media or interviews, they were extremely vocal about their strong connection and Valderrama once referred to Lovato as his “soulmate”. Although the two have decided to call it quits, they expressed their desire to continue their friendship. In a joint statement on their respective Instagram accounts, they announced their split during the first week of June. “This was an incredibly difficult decision for both of us, but we have realized more than anything that we are better as friends. We will always be supportive of one another.”

5. Drew Barrymore & Will Kopelman

After struggling with apparent marriage issues for a while, the actress and her husband of almost four years have ultimately decided to pull the plug on their relationship. In their official statement they expressed that while their family is legally separating, that it will not take away from them remaining a family. The couple are parents to two young daughters: Olive, 3, and Frankie, 2. Although their romance lost its spark, the former couple plan to co-parent their daughters and agree on the fact that the children will be the first priority as they continue on with their divorce. During her appearance on Chelsea Handler’s new Netflix show, Chelsea, Barrymore expressed how she feels like a failure while going through the divorce and that she has struggled to come to terms with the end of their marriage. Despite trying their best to make it a long lasting marriage, they both agree that separating is the best thing for their family.

4. Joshua Jackson & Diane Kruger

Diane Kruger and Joshua Jackson’s split marked another surprising breakup, when it was announced during early July their decade-long romance has come to an end. She was two years his senior, and the former couple began dating after Kruger divorced her French director husband after five years of marriage. While the former couple were private about their relationship, they lived together in New York and were often photographed enjoying each other’s company. The last time the two were spotted in public together was back in February at the opening of Jackson’s Broadway play. Prior to their split, it was rumored that Kruger had an affair with her Sky co-star, Norman Reedus. Reports regarding the cheating allegations were reported after Kruger and Reedus were spotted getting hot and heavy at a New York City dive bar, while Jackson was filming in the Philippines. While it’s unclear as to whether infidelity was the cause for their split, it sure adds up in the timeline of the events.

3. Taylor Kinney & Lady Gaga

Lady Gaga once again shocked the world last week, but this time it wasn’t for her choice of red carpet apparel. The singer announced that she and her fiancé Taylor Kinney have ended their engagement. Together for five years, the couple became engaged last year on Valentine’s Day when the Chicago Fire actor proposed to Gaga at her family’s restaurant in Manhattan. Due to distance and time consuming schedules, the pair have called off their engagement in order to take a break from the pressure their careers have placed on their relationship. After the breakup was announced, Gaga took to social media to express her hopes to reconcile. “We are both ambitious artists, hoping to work through long-distance and complicated schedules to continue the simple love we have always shared. Please root us on. We’re just like everybody else and we really love each other,” the Mother Monster shared on her official Instagram account, complete with an attached picture of the former lovers. While it’s unclear as to whether or not the two will reunite, it seems that they are adamant about being together if it’s meant to be.

2. Calvin Harris & Taylor Swift

And just like that, another one bites the dust. It’s no secret that Taylor Swift has capitalized in her career on addressing her failed romances in song and on the next album we will all know exactly what went wrong during her relationship with the Scottish DJ, Calvin Harris. In early June, just after spending a little over a year together, the music sensations called it quits. Following the split, Harris tweeted that while they broke up, love and respect remained between the two. Everything seemed to end fairly well, until Swift was caught canoodling with actor Tom Hiddleston which led many to believe the pop-star cheated on Harris prior to their split. Singing the same tune of breaking boys’ hearts like a flip of a switch, Swift then went on to call out Harris by revealing that she wrote his hit Rihanna single, “This Is What You Came For”, under the name Nils Sjoberg. Not backing down against Swift’s attempt to control the media once again, Harris held nothing back in a series of tweets stating that she should focus on her new relationship rather than tearing others down just because she is off tour and apparently has nothing else better to do. Needless to say, this is hands down the most entertaining breakup of the year so far, and Harris definitely dodged a bullet by ending the romance.

1. Johnny Depp & Amber Heard

While the end of Johnny Depp and Amber Heard’s marriage didn’t exactly surprise anyone, it was the allegations that followed the separation that had jaws dropping. In late May, it was announced that Amber filed for divorce after marrying the actor in a lavish island ceremony back in February of 2015. The reason for the breakup came out of left field when the 30-year-old actress also filed a restraining order against the Through the Looking Glass actor. The 15-month marriage was apparently tense behind closed doors, for Heard cited irreconcilable differences, and claimed there was history of domestic violence. Heard was photographed coming out of court after being granted the restraining order with bruises on her face. Depp’s ex-partner and his daughter spoke publicly, claiming that the violence allegations were outrageous and that he was far from a physically abusive man. With no prenuptial agreement, many believe that Heard is blackmailing the successful actor as she recently accused her former husband of stalling the divorce. Despite the fact that Depp filed papers to keep their divorce a private matter, it’s going to be quite interesting to see how the rest of the divorce proceedings turn out.
