Relationships between Hollywood celebrities are notoriously short-lived. Kim Kardashian’s famous 72-day marriage to Kris Humphries is hardly an anomaly, for the fast-paced and glamorous lifestyle of the rich and famous, coupled with the pressures of stardom often contributes to an early demise for relationships that might otherwise flourish. But although some couples seem doomed from the start, others seem to have the kind of relationship that you can’t help but root for. Whether it’s the chemistry both on and off screen, or the mutual looks of adoration that pass between a couple, sometimes two Hollywood stars just seem made for each other. Additionally, when a couple’s entire relationship is plotted throughout countless magazines and tabloids, it can be easy to become attached to the idea of them together. These ten celebrity breakups are some of the most heartbreaking in history – these Hollywood sweethearts seemed perfect for each other, until it all came crashing down, breaking the hearts of the public, as well as the couple themselves.
10. Nicole Kidman and Tom Cruise
Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman met while filming Days of Thunder, in 1989 and married two years later. The power couple was married for just over a decade and had two adopted children, but divorced in 2001. The divorce was Tom’s decision – Nicole reportedly begged him to stay, but to no avail. Nicole was apparently pregnant with Tom’s child when he filed for divorce, although he was unaware at the time. Nicole’s pregnancy ultimately failed, and Nicole’s side of the story placed Tom at the center of the blame. Nicole claimed that Tom left her in the cold, abandoning their relationship without talking to her or attempting to fix any problems they might have had. Even the wealthy and beautiful can experience a tragic and one-sided breakup.
9. Rihanna and Chris Brown
The relationship between Rihanna and Chris Brown always seemed rocky – the pair split up and got back together countless times. Despite the turbulent relationship, everyone still seemed to be rooting for the musical duo to make it work, until Chris Brown committed an unforgivable offense. Chris Brown notoriously assaulted Rihanna in 2009, and subsequently plead guilty to felony assault charges. The couple stayed together despite the abuse but eventually broke up in May 2013. Watching a couple with so much potential break up after violence and hardship is enough to make anyone swear off dating.
8. Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart
Twilight fans had mixed feelings about the relationship between Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart. ‘Twihards’ were equally split between adoring the couple and uncontrollable jealousy that Robert was no longer on the market. Those who idealized the relationship between the two Twilight stars found their breakup to be extremely tragic. Rumors that the two were dating abounded since the beginning of filming, but were confirmed in 2011. Unfortunately, Robert just didn’t seem good enough for Kristen. The starlet was caught in an affair with the married director of Snow White and the Huntsman, although she later begged Robert to take her back. It turns out that vampires go through romantic woes just like the rest of us.
7. Jessica Simpson and Nick Lachey
Jessica Simpson and Nick Lachey had the kind of sticky-sweet romance that everybody dreams of. The couple was only married for three years, from 2002 – 2005, but they managed to star in their own reality show, Newlyweds: Nick and Jessica. The series ran for 41 episodes and banked mostly on Jessica’s dumb blonde persona. Through the series, the entire world was offered a generous view into the lives of two of America’s favorite sweethearts. Despite Jessica and Nick’s success with the show, however, the marriage just couldn’t make it. The couple cited irreconcilable differences as the cause of their 2005 divorce.
6. Bobby Brown and Whitney Houston
Whitney Houston and Bobby Brown were married for a lengthy 15 years, by far the longest on this list. The two met in 1989, began dating in 1991 and married in 1992, but their relationship was plagued by numerous problems including abuse, drug use and infidelity. Whitney eventually filed for divorce in 2006 and it was finalized in 2007. Fans greeted the demise of their marriage with sadness; however, the grief over their breakup was nothing compared to the mourning for Whitney’s death in 2012.
5. Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez
Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez were the original ‘Bennifer,’ one of the first couples at the beginning of a trend that mashed together celebrity couple’s names. The two started dating in late 2001, after meeting on the set of Gigli and subsequently became engaged in 2002. Although the wedding was set for 2003, Bennifer broke up in 2004, massively disappointing fans everywhere. It seems Ben just couldn’t let go of the ‘Bennifer’ title, because he married Jennifer Garner in 2005.
4. Gwyneth Paltrow and Chris Martin
With their blonde hair, chiseled features and statuesque height, Chris Martin and Gwyneth Paltrow looked stunning together. Not only did they appear perfect on the surface, their relationship seemed ideal as well. The couple met in 2002 and only recently announced their divorce in March of 2014. The pair had a baby girl in 2004. Chris proved himself to be a true romantic when he wrote multiple songs for Gwyneth, including Speed of Sound, about becoming a father and Fix You, about helping Gwyneth cope with the death of her father. Sadly, the romance and baby Apple couldn’t keep Gwyneth and Chris together. Despite the imminent divorce, the couple plans on remaining close friends, so we can root for them to reunite.
3. Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams
The chemistry between Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams in the 2004 film, The Notebook was so palpable, it’s no surprise that the sexual tension between the two carried over into real life. The two managed to make the relationship in the film so believable, that we couldn’t help but hope that they’d share the same romantic fate in real life. Alas, the two broke up in 2007 and although they briefly reunited in 2008, they called it quits after that. It looks like Ryan and Rachel won’t pass away holding each other in their sleep like Noah and Allie, but that won’t stop us from hoping.
2. Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake
Never have there been two pop stars who were destined for each other like Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake. The two were both at the top of the charts in 1999, when they began dating, and the world couldn’t get enough of them, either separately or together. However, the two split up in 2002 amidst rumors that Britney cheated on Justin with her choreographer. The breakup eventually led to the famous Britney breakdown that included shaving her head, and it inspired Justin’s hit single, Cry Me a River. Both Britney and Justin claim that they haven’t spoken in nearly a decade, much to the chagrin of fans across the globe.
1. Brad Pitt and Jennifer Aniston
Brad Pitt and Jennifer Aniston were married for five years and seemed like the antithesis of regular Hollywood couples that only date for a week or two. The couple met in 1998 and married in 2000. Unfortunately, Hollywood’s golden couple met its end when Brad started filming Mr. and Mrs. Smith with Angelina Jolie, his current wife. The steamy scenes in the film led to Angelina and Brad falling in love in 2004, which reportedly caused Brad to impose a ban on all sex scenes in future movies. Although the 2005 divorce between Brad and Jennifer was heartbreaking, his marriage to Angelina Jolie also seems romantic and ideal.
