We’re always saying, “celebrities, they’re just like us” – and it’s true. Celebrities may be in the public eye all the time and have way more money than the rest of us, but they’re still human and they still have relationships to maintain. But unlike us, celebrities have to be hyper aware that there are people who might try to take advantage of them because of their money and fame. Hopefully they have a few people they can trust no matter what, like family and childhood friends, but sometimes even that isn’t guaranteed.
Forgiveness can be difficult, but it’s even harder when someone close to you betrays you in a way you never expected. Sometimes the best thing to do is just cut them out of your life completely, because you’ll probably never be able to trust them again. Celebrities have enough trouble maintaining their privacy without someone they trust sabotaging it for their own gain. Here are 10 celebrities who’ve been betrayed by someone close to them.
10. Ryan Reynolds
Ryan Reynolds recently revealed in a GQ interview that he caught one of his oldest friends shopping around pictures of his and wife Blake Lively‘s newborn daughter, James, to the tabloids. “I kind of got in front of it, which is good. But it was a slightly dark period. A bad couple of weeks… It was like a death. It was like one of those devastating things to find out,” he said. “There isn’t really a conversation to have. It’s just, ‘Oh, well, now I’m never going to see you or talk to you again, unfortunately.’ That’s kind of how it worked out.” Apparently his friend didn’t think he’d get caught, despite the fact that Reynolds and Lively only shared pictures with a select group of people they thought they could trust.
9. Jennifer Aniston
Jennifer Aniston has never have a close relationship with her mother, Nancy Dow. Their bond was so strained that Dow wasn’t invited to either one of Aniston’s weddings. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Aniston said of her mother, “she was critical. She was very critical of me. She was gorgeous, stunning. I wasn’t. I honestly still don’t think of myself in that sort of light, which is fine.” They were estranged for at least a decade after Dow published a book called From Mother and Daughter to Friends: A Memoir about her relationship with her daughter.
The domestic violence between Chris Brown and Rihanna became public knowledge when a photo of her injuries after an altercation in 2009 was released to the media. As if that wasn’t enough for Rihanna to deal with, she also found out that her father Ronald Fenty was selling information about her personal issues to the press. She told Vogue that her father “went to the press and just told them a bunch of lies. Because he hadn’t talked to me after … that whole thing . He never called to find out how I was doing, if I was alive, nothing. He just never called. He went straight to the press and got a check.” She added that she has no interest in having a relationship with him at this point.
7. Jude Law
In 2005, Jude Law was forced to admit to the world that he had been cheating on his girlfriend Sienna Miller with his children’s nanny. In 2014, he testified in court at the trial for News of the World, who were accused of hacking into people’s phones to get information to publish. He confirmed that he called Daniel Craig to confront him about sleeping with Miller, which is info he thought the paper obtained by hacking his phone. But Law found out while on the stand that someone close to him was actually selling information about his private life to the press. The person’s name was never made public, but Law said, “I was made aware very recently that there had been some kind of communication with this person … I was never aware any money changed hands.”
6. Robert Pattinson
Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart‘s relationship was subject to extreme levels of public scrutiny. Even though they tried to maintain a little privacy, their so-called fans weren’t having it. Not many relationships could withstand that much pressure, and theirs was no exception. Eventually, it came out that Stewart cheated on Pattinson with the married director of Snow White and the Huntsman. Although Pattinson never addressed the affair directly, he said in an interview with Sunday Style, “I judge people on their actions. I don’t really care if it’s wrong or right, I give them the benefit of the doubt. If they do something I can’t be bothered to deal with, I just cut them out.”
5. Sandra Bullock
No one really thought it was a good idea when Sandra Bullock married Jesse James. They were an odd couple, but they seemed pretty in love, especially the night she won her Best Actress Oscar for The Blind Side. Then only nine days later, he told her that he’d been having an affair. They got divorced after five years of marriage. In his book, American Outlaw, James talked about what he did. “I cheated on a woman I cared deeply about and if there was any way to undo my actions then I would. Sandy was a trusting woman at heart and that made me feel even more guilty. She’d never suspected a thing”
4. Angelina Jolie
It’s no secret that Angelina Jolie has always had a strained relationship with her father, Jon Voight. Even after Jolie failed to invite him to her the wedding when she married Brad Pitt, he’s always said he has nothing negative to say about her and wants her to be happy. There have been conflicting stories about why they’ve remained estranged, but after Voight talked about Angie’s personal business to the media, there was no chance of a reconciliation. He told Access Hollywood that he hoped she got help for her “mental problems”, and Jolie decided it was healthier for her to not have a relationship with him anymore.
3. Lindsay Lohan
Lindsay Lohan has had her share of problems, including substance abuse, reckless behavior, and a rocky career. But her family was never much help to her, especially her father, Michael. He’s sold private details about her life to the tabloids multiple times. He even recorded a phone call between he and Lindsay when she called to vent about a fight she’d had with her mother (his ex-wife). He made that phone call public, and Lindsay was forced to call TMZ herself to set the record straight. She said “I think everyone kind of knows that my father’s main objective had always been to destroy my mom. That was the last straw. I’m done.”
2. Drew Barrymore
Drew Barrymore has been vocal about the fact that she feels like she “didn’t really have parents” because of the way they treated her when she was young. She was a child star thanks to E.T. and she was doing drugs and drinking at a young age thanks to all the Hollywood parties she attended with her mother, Jaid Barrymore. She ended up in rehab by the time she was 14, and filed for emancipation when she was 15. Her mother allegedly sold some of Drew’s baby clothes and E.T. memorabilia on eBay, and Drew has said that their relationship is complicated, and it’s better that they keep their distance.
1. Bridget Moynahan
Bridget Moynahan had been dating NFL player Tom Brady for three years when he left her for supermodel Gisele Bundchen. As if that wasn’t enough, Moynahan was three months pregnant with their son at the time. Although they have maintained a civil relationship for the sake of their son, Bridget has spoken out about how she never planned on being a single mother. She told More magazine she doesn’t think “any girl grows up dreaming of being a single mom. But there’s not a second I regret having a child on my own.”
