People who are constantly in the public eye really ought to be careful about the statements that they make to the media. Why? Because they may end up eating their words and looking foolish if what they said turned out to be false in the long run.
Many actors are prudent and choose not to give interviews that pertain to anything about their personal lives so they don’t regret it later. But others are bold enough to make sweeping statements that they later don’t live by. Here’s a list of actors who were staunchly vocal about their desire to remain childless—but lo and behold, they either have kids now or look to be on the road to having their own offspring!
Johnny McDaid and Courteney Cox
Friends star Courteney Cox already has one daughter, Coco, from her marriage to David Arquette. So there was no real pressure on her end to have more kids, though she was open to the idea. Luckily, she started dating someone who initially had no interest in having his own kids. After dating for a little less than a year, Cox became engaged to Snow Patrol band member, Johnny McDaid. According to RadarOnline.com, at first, McDaid was adamant on his stand not to have children—but after spending time and bonding with Coco, he realized that he did want to become a father. He convinced Cox to have another child and now, they’re both on the same page, actively searching for a surrogate to carry and give birth to their baby!
Hunky actor Josh Holloway of Lost fame married his lovely wife in 2004 and even before the wedding, they had mutually agreed that they didn’t want kids. The couple had an incurable need to travel as extensively as they could and they felt that becoming parents would deter them from their goals. But several years later, Holloway told People magazine that he and his wife had a change of heart, saying, “nature happened. If you’re in a loving relationship with someone, having children becomes a part of it.” Today, they are parents to two beautiful children.
Back in 2009, American Idol and Grammy winner Kelly Clarkson told People magazine outright that having kids was not something she found appealing. “I have no desire! I would not be a good mother!” she was quoted as saying. Let’s just hope she didn’t mean the bit about not being a good mother because a few years later, she married talent manager Brandon Blackstock and she became a stepmother to his children. Then another couple of years later, she became a full-fledged mother when she gave birth to the couple’s first child together, a daughter.
When news hit the stands that notorious bachelor Simon Cowell had fathered a child, the media went into a frenzy. Not just because of his strong statements that he wanted to steer clear of fatherhood, but by the circumstances on how he became one. It was reported that Cowell was having a child with Lauren Silverman, who happened to be the wife of his close friend. Needless to say, Silverman was promptly divorced by her husband and even Cowell admitted to being shocked by the news of the pregnancy. Silverman gave birth to their son earlier this year and Cowell clearly adores his boy, even stating that he wouldn’t mind having another child with Silverman in the near future.
Sultry actress Eva Mendes once claimed she didn’t think children were ever in the cards for her. She was quoted as saying that though she loved them, “I don’t want to have kids…I love sleep so much.” So it came as a jolt to the public when it was announced that she and boyfriend Ryan Gosling were expecting a baby. The news took us all by surprise because one, no one was even sure if she and Gosling were still dating, as news of a break-up had been swirling here and there; and two, because she said she never wanted kids! But no matter what she said in the past, she surely adores her and Gosling’s beautiful baby girl now and is embracing motherhood to the hilt.
Once deemed Hollywood’s most eligible and perpetual bachelor, George Clooney has said on many occasions that he will never get married again. But all it took was for him to meet the right woman. He wed international human rights lawyer Amal Alamuddin on the last weekend of September and it’s clear in their photos and in his public statements after they got engaged that he’s absolutely smitten with his bride. Clooney, who once made the statement, “I’ve always known fatherhood wasn’t for me” may very well be biting his tongue on the topic of parenthood as well. It was reported that they were told at the wedding to have kids right away! And given the fact that his new wife is still at the prime of her childbearing years, it won’t be a surprise if they hear the pitter-patter of little Clooney feet in the near future.
Believe it or not, mother-of-six Hollywood star Angelina Jolie once had no desire for children. She was a strong advocate of adoption and had already ruled out pregnancy, saying she would rather adopt because it was the right thing to do. But who changed her mind? Her husband, Brad Pitt. Jolie told Today that when she saw how Pitt had bonded with Maddox and Zahara, her two eldest (adopted) children, she could all of a sudden visualize herself becoming a biological mother to Pitt’s children, saying, “I suddenly wanted to. It’s one of those things you can’t explain.” After one more adoption, she gave birth to three children: Shiloh, and twins Knox and Vivienne. Of pregnancy, she said, “I wouldn’t trade that experience for the world.”
