Between movie premieres and awards shows honoring those movies, there are quite a few red carpet events every single year. With each red carpet event comes the red carpet fashion hits and misses, but what does it really take to be a red carpet hit?
For one, the look cannot be boring. For the most part, a conservative look will probably keep one off the worst dressed list but it is not likely to land someone on the best dressed list. To land on the best dressed list, one must stand out from the crowd, whether it be by wearing a pop of color, interesting fabric or untraditional silhouette. In order to be the best dressed, one’s look must be exciting.
Besides the actual clothing, a look cannot be complete without jewelry, shoes and a purse, three landmines that can ruin the look or transcend the look above all the rest. Many of the best red carpet looks from 2015 were made by a daring pop of color in the heels or a statement necklace (here’s looking at your Naomi Watts).
While there may be some women who constantly kill it on the red carpet, with the right look anyone can land on the best dressed list. The ladies who grace this list of the seventeen most stunning looks on the red carpet range from Oscar winners to Victoria’s Secret supermodels to self-proclaimed cat ladies.
17. Lily Aldridge – MTV Video Music Awards
Considering the fact that Lily Aldridge is a Victoria’s Secret supermodel, it should be no surprise that she is on this list. The 29-year-old bombshell arrived to the MTV VMAs wearing a black dress that was anything but boring. The backless Alexandre Vauthier couture dress had a plunging neckline and showed off Aldridge’s amazing body. Aldridge kept her hair low key and accessorized with Anita Ko bracelets. She attended to support BFF Taylor Swift, who won Video of the Year for the “Bad Blood”, in which Aldridge (and 90% of Hollywood) appeared.
16. Rosamund Pike – The Oscars
Audiences saw Rosamund Pike covered in red in Gone Girl, but that red was Neil Patrick Harris’ character’s blood and much less glamorous than this red Givenchy dress that she wore to the Oscars, where she a nominated for her portrayal of Amy Dunne in Gone Girl. The dress was styled with red heels and minimal jewelry, leaving just the red dress to speak for itself. Channeling an effortlessly chic Old Hollywood look, Pike’s blonde hair was pulled back into a loose ballerina bun.
15. Emma Roberts – The Emmys
Emma Roberts showed up to the Emmys in a low cut custom Jenny Packham gown. The delicate necklace she wore was the perfect accessory to draw attention to the plunging neckline but not take away from it. Her side swept hair completed this playful Old Hollywood look. Emma Roberts is a red carpet pro, perhaps getting advice from her aunt, Julia Roberts, who has had much experience with stealing the show at premieres and awards shows.
14. Naomi Watts – The Golden Globes
Yellow is not an easy color to pull off but you’d never know that by how effortlessly perfect Naomi Watts looks in this strapless Gucci gown. She accessorized with a showstopping Bulgari diamond snake necklace. With the yellow gown and the snake necklace both being loud pieces, she rocked a wavy, loose look for her hair. She is no stranger making her rounds at awards shows, with two Oscar nominations under her belt.
13. Scarlett Johansson – MTV Movie Awards
While Scarlett Johansson is usually known for showing off her hourglass figure in a curve hugging dress, she turned heads when she arrived to the MTV Movie Awards in a bright pink Zuhair Murad jumpsuit. Not shying away from bright colors, she paired this number with a bright blue Roger Vivier clutch and multicolored Sophia Webster heels. This ensemble was something her character Black Widow would certainly shy away from but Johansson rocked it. She kept her make up light and natural looking with pink lipstick finishing it off.
12. Anna Kendrick – The Oscars
When everyone’s favorite quirky actress Anna Kendrick arrived on the red carpet for the Oscars, there was nothing quirky about her gorgeous look. The 29-year-old wore a custom peach Thakoon gown. Her bright, peachy makeup complimented the dress perfectly. She finished off the look with an updo and Norman Silverman jewelry. Who says funny girls can’t be hot?
11. Taylor Swift – Grammy Awards
It’s Taylor Swift, so the Grammy Awards are kinda her thing. Also, Taylor Swift’s legs are kinda her thing. Her legs are rumored to be insured for $40 million so they’re a pretty big deal. Leave it to Taylor Swift to find a way to showcase her $40 million legs in a gorgeous gown at the Grammys, where she was nominated for three awards. She paired her custom blue Elie Saab gown with pink Giuseppe Zanotti heels and somehow the two bright colors worked perfectly together.
10. Julianne Moore – The Golden Globes
Julianne Moore swept through this awards season winning at basically everything and she did so with style. While it was difficult to pick just one of Moore’s looks for this list, her Golden Globes look was daring and simply stunning. The sequins silver ombre Givenchy Couture gown hugged the 54-year-old’s slender frame. The dress even featured feathers at the hemline. It’s not everyone who can pull off a dress with both sequins and feathers but Julianne Moore sure can.
9. Hailee Steinfeld – MTV Video Music Awards
Hailee Steinfeld may be the youngest person on this list but her sophisticated look was years beyond her age. Steinfeld rocked a white Stella McCartney jumpsuit that was all about clean lines. She styled this look with gold heels, a gold clutch and a gold a thick gold choker. Like Aldridge, Steinfeld is another member of Taylor Swift’s squad and was also in the “Bad Blood” video because, well, who wasn’t?
8. Rihanna – Met Gala
At this point, you can basically count on Rihanna, the singer who seems to be unable to make a song that radios and audiences don’t love, to steal the show at the Met Gala and this year was no different. Rihanna apparently found this yellow number online while researching Chinese couture. The embellished train outlined in yellow fur was a Chinese couture piece designed by Guo Pei. Only Rihanna, a risk taker in terms of fashion, could pull off this extravagant look. In fact, in 2014, Rihanna received the Fashion Icon Lifetime Achievement Award from the CFDA.
7. Gigi Hadid – CFDA Awards
If it seems like every red carpet look from Gigi Hadid this year was perfect, that’s because they were. Her look at the CFDA Awards wearing a shimmery gold Michael Kors jumpsuit stood out as a frontrunner to be crowned her best look from 2015. The gold jumpsuit complimented her sun-kissed skin and beachy, blonde waves perfectly. Gigi Hadid is having a great year, not only walking in high fashion shows, but she will always be walking in the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show on December 8th. Like fellow model and BFF Kendall Jenner, she also appeared on a reality television show, The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills, before making her leap into the fashion industry.
6. Emma Stone – The Oscars
Emma Stone often kills it on the red carpet so it’s no surprise that she brought her A game to the Oscars this year, where she was a first-time nominee for her role of Sam, the daughter of Riggan, played by Michael Keaton, in Birdman. This backless, long-sleeve, custom Elie Saab gown in green complimented her fair skin and red hair beautifully. She finished the look with her hair in a side swept wavy do and bright peach lipstick on her lips. Though, she didn’t take home an Oscar, she looked stunning on the red carpet.
5. Kate Hudson – Met Gala
At the Met Gala, 36-year-old Kate Hudson, who won audience’s over with her performance of Penny Lane in Almost Famous, wowed in a backless gold Michael Kors dress. The dress hugged her fit figure, making her look like a walking golden statue. The dress trailed off into a small train. Kate Hudson finished the look with a headpiece and her hair in a bun. Being that she is the daughter of Goldie Hawn, who can also rock a red carpet look herself, it is no surprise that she rules the red carpet with looks like this one.
4. Chrissy Teigen – The Golden Globes
Chrissy Teigen‘s best accessory at the Golden Globes was, without a doubt, her husband John Legend, who was nominated and took home a Golden Globe that night. However, Chrissy Teigen’s long-sleeved beaded Zuhair Murad gown that hugged her curvy figure wasn’t too bad either. In fact, it was stunning. She paired the lavish gown with her hair in a ponytail, pulling even more attention to the amazing Zuhair Murad number. While Teigen looks amazing wearing hardly anything on the cover of Sports Illustrated, she looks even better in this sophisticated gown.
3. Taylor Schilling – The Emmys
While the entire cast of Orange is the New Black looked phenomenal at the Emmys, Taylor Schilling stood out in her backless yellow Stella McCartney dress. Though, she wasn’t nominated for her role of Piper Chapman this year as she had been in 2014, she still stole the show on the red carpet. She paired the dress with a lighter yellow Stella McCartney clutch and bright lipstick. An easy, wavy style for her hair finished off the fun red carpet look. Schilling’s effortlessly glam look makes one wonder if, maybe, yellow is really the new black.
2. Kendall Jenner – The ESPYs
Now that Kendall Jenner is a bonafide runway model, it is no surprise that she stuns on the red carpet. While attending the ESPYs to support Caitlyn Jenner, the reality television star turned heads in an Alexandre Vauthier Haute Couture gown. The sheer gown was a daring look for the Calvin Klein model and it also furthered speculation that Kendall Jenner has a nipple ring. By stepping onto the red carpet with looks like this, Kendall has been able to prove that she is so much more than just Kim Kardashian’s little sister and even Estee Lauder, who nabbed Kendall as the new face of the brand, agrees.
1. Beyonce – Met Gala
Can any best dressed list really ever be complete with Beyonce? The answer to that question is, obviously, no. Beyonce wore a sheer bejeweled Givenchy dress with a small train. The dress covered just enough of Beyonce’s curves and left very little to the imagination. She finished the look by keeping it playful with a high side ponytail. If ever you were looking for a reason why Beyonce’s fans call her Queen B this look at the Met Gala should explain it.
