For those of us that were considered geeky looking while growing up, having your picture taken probably ranked up there with a trip to the dentist, or eating brussels sprouts (unless you like brussels sprouts and dentists, in that case, pick something you else you may find distasteful). The worst was probably the pictures that were taken to be included in the High School Yearbook.

Thankfully, for the majority of us, our high school pictures will only be seen by a small amount of people; mostly family and friends. Unfortunately, once you become a celebrity, all those embarrassing photos are seen by millions of people and now everyone can see that gawky, awkward picture of you in 10th grade. Don't feel too bad for these people though. They grew out of their geeky stage to become pretty attractive and successful entertainers.

11. Avril Lavigne

Here's a girl who has certainly changed her image since she was in school. Avril Lavigne got noticed when she appeared onstage with Canadian country singer Shania Twain. By the age of 16, she had secured a recording contract which debuted her to the world. Her song Complicated hit number one, and her sophomore hit Sk8er boi cemented her reign as punk/pop princess. She took some time off,  married and divorced Sum 41's Deryck Whibley but was married a second time to Nickelback's singer and front-man Chad Kroeger in 2013.

10. Taylor Swift

Taylor Swift has seemingly been dominating everything music related this past year. Her latest album 1989 has definitely cemented her crossover from country singer to pop star. Perhaps in a homage to her geeky roots, she has also become quite the whiz at social media, with many Tumblr and Instagram followers. Her legion of Swifties is vast and far reaching, with other celebrities such as Neil Young and Jon Bon Jovi singing her praises.

9. Kathy Griffin

Kathy Griffin is the type of comedienne you either like or don't. She is pretty zany. She got her start in the improv comedy group called The Groundlings which also included the late great Phil Hartman. She went on to perform stand up comedy, and had bit parts in movies like Pulp fiction, and also in 2 episodes of Seinfeld, but it was only when she appeared on Brooke Shields' sitcom Suddenly Susan that she had consistent public exposure. She was also a guest co-host of The View, and had her own show called Kathy Griffin: My Life on the D-List.

8. Demi Moore

Demi Moore first gained recognition on General Hospital, playing investigative reporter Jackie Templeton, from there, she moved to the big screen with movies like Blame It on Rio, St. Elmo's Fire and About Last Night. She was a bona fide member of the Brat Pack a group of young, rising actors that also included Rob Lowe, Emilio Estevez and Robert Downey Jr. among others. She was famously married to Bruce Willis, with whom she had 3 daughters. After their divorce, she remarried and subsequently divorced Ashton Kutcher. As you can see, she definitely grew out of her awkward phase and became one of the sexiest women in Hollywood.

7. George Clooney

George Clooney is known as one of the sexiest men in Hollywood. Until recently, he was one of the most eligible bachelors, and was also on many Most Handsome and Sexy lists. He got his start on the 80's show The Facts of Life, but quickly moved on to bigger and better things. One of his most famous roles would be Danny Ocean from the Ocean's Trilogy. He has definitely improved with age.

6. Eminem

Marshall Mathers, or Eminem as he is more famously known, is a very successful recording artist. While his music is catchy, he is known for having lyrics that are rather controversial. The angry lyrics stem from his formative years growing up shuffling between homes and being bullied in school. He was even sued by his own mother over defamatory lyrics he wrote about her in his songs. Even after facing various obstacles, Eminem has proven that perseverance can really pay off.

5. Jennifer Lopez

Even beautiful women like Jennifer Lopez can go through gawky stages in life. This beauty got her start as a Fly Girl on the show In Living Color, it was her dance moves that garnered her attention. Then she landed the lead role in Selena, and hasn't looked back since. She's had many chart-topping hits such as Jenny from the Block, as well as starring in numerous movies and more recently judging American Idol. She's another example of improving with age, like a fine wine.

4. Ryan Seacrest

If you were to see only the before photo, this person is almost unrecognizable. Ryan Seacrest has grown up from the bespectacled, braces wearing teenager, to an American Idol host, who has now taken over Dick Clark's original reign over New Years Rockin' Eve and is also a radio host in LA, whose morning show used to belong to Rick Dees. He has not only changed his look from his younger days but has managed to become one of the most successful individuals in Hollywood.

3. Justin Timberlake

Ah..Justin Timberlake..where to begin. He was first introduced to America on the TV show Star Search, from there, he went on to The Mickey Mouse Club with other young alumni such as Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera. After that, he became the lead singer of the boy band 'N Sync. Ahh his hair, his bleach blonde tips were a part of his look back then and girls adored him for it. Since those days, he embarked on a successful solo career, and also showed us how funny he can be in numerous SNL guest appearances. Now expecting a child with his wife Jessica Biel, this is one performer that definitely became sexier over time.

2. Matthew Lewis

Matthew Lewis is an English actor best known for playing Neville Longbottom in the Harry Potter series. In the books, the character of Neville was portrayed as a rather chubby, uncoordinated bookish fellow who doubted his own abilities. Matthew Lewis was perfectly cast in this role, and did a great job with it, but whoa boy, look at him now. He's lost the baby fat and has grown into quite a handsome man. Here's to hoping we see more of him in the future.

1. Brad Pitt

Brad Pitt has made women swoon since he first appeared in Thelma and Louise. He's typically chosen roles that don't focus on his looks, in favor of more character based performances. In his hit film Fight Club, with Edward Norton, he plays the (spoiler) psychotic other personality of Edward Norton's character. It's nice to see that even the sexiest man (according to People Magazine many times) was also a victim of bad, homemade haircuts.
