Every now and again you may be watching an old movie or TV show and you momentarily wonder, ‘whatever happened to this guy?’ Your next thought is usually that they must be gone, as it has been so long since they’ve done anything new. Well, the celebrities on this list are names and faces most of us know—some from film and some from television. They are actors and actresses who were stars awhile ago, but have not been active in recent years. Perhaps, you thought it was because they had passed on but eureka, they turn up on a talk show or you read about them online or in a newspaper.

This list includes many actors who were once acclaimed by critics and nominated for and won many prestigious awards. Now they are just enjoying a much quieter existence. So have a look here and see if you are not surprised at who you see here. They are older but definitely alive and well.

10. Jim Nabors, born June 12, 1930 (age 83)

He is an American actor and singer. Nabors was born and raised in Alabama but moved to Southern California because of his asthma.  He was working in a nightclub and was discovered by the late actor Andy Griffith and asked to join the cast of “The Andy Griffith Show”. He was best known for being Gomer Pyle on television. Nabors became a popular guest on variety shows in the 1960s and 1970s (including two specials of his own), which showcased his rich baritone voice. He also recorded numerous albums and singles, most of them were romantic ballads. In 2013 Nabors married his companion of 38 years ,Stan Cadwallader. Nabors said he and Cadwallader traveled from Hawaii to Washington state, where gay marriages are legal.  They were married at the Fairmont Olympic Hotel in Seattle.

9. Dick Van Dyke, born December 13, 1925 (age 88)

He is an American actor, comedian, writer, singer, dancer and producer with a career spanning seven decades. He is the older brother of actor Jerry Van Dyke and father of actor Barry Van Dyke. He is known primarily for his smash 1960s sitcom with actress Mary Tyler Moore, “The Dick Van Dyke Show”. Van Dyke starred in the films, Bye Bye Birdie”, “Mary Poppins” and “Chitty Chitty Bang Bang”. He received a Grammy for his work on the “Mary Poppins” soundtrack and The Lifetime Achievement award.

He currently appears at local venues (most recently January 2014) as Dick Van Dyke and The Vantastix, singing tunes from his stage and screen career.  He met them at a Malibu CA coffee shop and started the group, “just for fun”.

8. Eva Marie Saint, July 4, 1924 (age 89)

Eva Marie Saint is an American actress and producer. She is most well known for her performance in 1954s, “On The Waterfront” for which she won an Oscar as Best Supporting Actress. Saint has also won a Golden Globe and an Emmy, as well as a BAFTA (British Academy of Film and Television Arts). She has appeared in many films and television productions. Eva Marie Saint is still acting, she is in the new 2014 film, “Winter’s Tale” with Colin Farrell.

7. Lauren Bacall, born September 16, 1924 (age 89)

She is an American model and film and stage actress known for her distinctive husky voice and sultry looks in her heyday. She came to prominence as the leading lady in 1944s “To Have And Have Not” with Humphrey Bogart whom she married.

Bacall has worked on Broadway in musicals, garnering 2 Tony Awards . Her performance in the movie “The Mirror Has Two Faces” in 1996 earned her a Golden Globe Award and an Academy Award nomination.  Still active,  in relatively good health and approaching 90 she lives in New York City.  Bacall is one of the last links left to the Golden Age of Hollywood.

6. Doris Day, born April 3, 1922 (age 91)

She began her career as a big band singer in 1939 and rose to fame with her first hit recording, “Sentimental Journey”. She was under contract with Columbia Records from 1947 to 1967 and made 650 recordings. Doris Day appeared in 39 films and became the top-ranking female box office star of all time. She was nominated for an Oscar for “Pillow Talk” and in 1989 was awarded the Cecil B. DeMille Award for lifetime achievement in motion pictures. She made her last film in 1968.

Doris turns 90 in 2014 and the celebrations have already begun. She lives in Carmel, CA and has a legion of fans that help her celebrate annually, many even staying the hotel she owns there. She is also still very active in her own Pet Foundation.

5. Carol Channing born January 31, 1921 (age 93)

She is an American actress and comedian. Channing has spent a lot of her career doing broadway musicals and is the recipient of three Tony Awards. She is known for her roles in both “Hello Dolly” and “Gentleman Prefer Blondes”. Channing was inducted into he American Theatre Hall of Fame in 1981.  She appeared in January of 2014 with Justin Vivian Bond in a special engagement called, “Gentlemen Prefer Blondes: An Intimate Evening With Carol Channing and Justin Vivian Bond”, in New York City.

4. Mickey Rooney, born September 23, 1920 (age 93)

He is an American actor and entertainer whose film, television, and stage appearances span nearly his entire lifetime. Rooney has received multiple awards including both a Juvenile and an Honoray Oscar, two Golden Globes and one Emmy. He’s been a performer since he was a child, was a superstar in Hollywood as a teenager for playing Andy Hardy in the film series. Mickey Rooney has had one of the longest careers of any actor, spanning 92 years actively making films for ten decades, from the 1920s to the 2010s. He gained international fame for his leading role as Henry Dailey in The Family Channel’s “The Adventures of the Black Stallion” which aired in the early 1990s.  Despite his age, Rooney continuesto make public appearances and was a passenger on the Turner Classic Movie Classics Cruise that sailed from Miami to Mexico. The actor also made a public service announcement on behalf of military veterans.

3. Maureen O’Hara, born August 17, 1920 (age 93)

She is an Irish film actress and singer. The famously red-headed O'Hara has been noted for playing fiercely passionate heroines with a highly sensible attitude. She often worked with. director John Ford and longtime friend John Wayne.

Her autobiography, “'Tis Herself”, was published in 2004 and was a New York Times Bestseller. She still makes the occasional appearance. O’Hara will present the world premiere restoration of John Ford’s “How Green Was My Valley” (1941) at the upcoming 2014 Turner Classic Film Festival in April.

2. Olivia de Havilland, born July 1, 1916 (age 97)

Born in Tokyo to British parents, she is a British American actress known for her early ingenue roles. de Havilland’s most memorable role was as Melanie Hamilton in the 1939 film, “Gone With The Wind”. She won two Oscars and she and her sister, late actress Joan Fontaine are the only two siblings to have won lead acting Oscars. In addition to a Golden Globe award, in 2008 de Havilland was presented with the National Medal of Arts by then President George W. Bush. These days she is reportedly still very active and makes her home in Paris, France, where she is often seen doing the readings at her church, The American Cathedral.

1. Eli Wallach, born December 7, 1915 (age 98)

He is an American film, television and stage actor whose career has spanned more than six decades beginning in the late 1940s. He worked with Marilyn Monroe and Clark Gable in 1961s “The Misfits”, appeared in both 1960s “The Magnificent Seven” and “The Good, the Bad and the Ugly” in 1966.

Wallach has received BAFTA Awards (British Academy of Film and Television Arts), Tony Awards and Emmy Awards for his work, and He also received an Honorary Academy Award at the 2nd Annual Governors Awards, presented on November 13, 2010. Wallach who resides in New York City is still active and acting -he does guest shots on TV shows and in films such as, “The Holiday” in 2006.
