Alan Stuart Franken was born on May 21, 1951  in New York City, New York. He is a graduate of Harvard University with a degree in government. Since 1975, he has been married to Franni Bryson with whom he has two children named Thomasin and Joseph. 

After departing from Air America Radio, Franken formally announced his intentions of becoming a US Senator from Minnesota. He was challenged by Mike Ciresi, a trial attorney; Jim Cohen, a human rights activist and attorney; and Jack Nelson-Pallmeyer, an activist, author and professor. He won the election.

On July 7, 2009, he was sworn into office, 246 days after he was elected. He intends to run in the 2014 election for his second term.
