Walther Moreira Salles was born to João Moreira Salles, the man behind the establishment of Casa Bancária Moreira Salles (Moreira Salles Banking House) in Pocos de Caldas. At age 21, he became a partner in the bank in 1933. Seven years later, the bank was able to merge three regional banks, and it was later renamed to União de Bancos Brasileiros (Unibanco). Eventually, the bank became one of the top three banking institutions in Brazil. After spending 60 years of his life for Unibanco, Salles finally retired as the bank’s Chairman of the Board in 1991.
Walther Moreira Salles was born on May 28, 1912 in Pouso Alegre, Minas Gerais, Brazil. He died in 2001 due to causes undisclosed. He had two unsuccessful marriages, with Helene and Eliza, before he married Lucia in 1986. He has four children named Pedro, Walter, Joao and Fernando Moreira Salles. His son, Pedro Moreira Salles, currently serves as Unibanco’s current president.
