He is a graduate of Moscow State University. Gruzdev is currently married and has three children.

In 1993, he decided to abandon his military career to establish The Seventh Continent hypermarkets net which grew into one of Russia's largest retailers. After working for billionaire Oleg Boyko, he founded supermarkets chain Sedmoi Kontinent. In 2007, he sold his stakes in the company to Alexander Zanadvorov. Currently, his company controls Fashion Continent. In addition to vast tracks of land he owns in Moscow, Vladimir Gruzdev also holds stakes in Moscow's luxury real estate developer, RGI International.
