After graduating from Yale University, Bass attended Harvard Business School. In 1968, he started working for the family business which was founded by his late uncle Sid Richardson and his now deceased father, Perry Richardson Bass. From 1984 through 2001, Sid Bass, together with his two brothers and father, were the largest shareholders in the world renowned The Walt Disney Company. Due to the result of margin call in 2001, Sid Bass and his family were forced to sell their shares which were mostly acquired by the Griffith family. The Griffith family is known to have equity holdings in KKR, MGM-UA and Time Warner.

In the past, Bass got involved in a major public scandal when he started wooing Mercedes Kellogg in 1986, when the latter was still married to Ambassador Francis Kellogg, and he was still married to hid first wife Anne Hendricks. He has two children with Hendricks. Eventually, he divorced Anne and married Mercedes.
