The lending shortage took its toll on the Norwich financial broker Central Trust, which shed up to 180 jobs in 2009.

Turner, its chairman, is an accountant by training. He set up Central Trust in 1987 in a small London office as a broker and lender of secured loans in the consumer finance sector. Its principal subsidiary is one of the biggest independent finance brokers offering loans to UK homeowners, while other subsidiaries operate in loan packaging, mortgage packaging and telemarketing. Last year, Central Trust moved back into profit, making $2.18 million on sales of $56.8 million. Sunday Times Rich List valued the business, which has net assets worth $106.96 million. Other assets take Turner and his wife Sharon who is also a director, to $83.39 million.
