Born in 1953, Mike Helton is actually a native of Bristol Virginia. He is an alumnus of King College where he majored in accounting and minored in Math. It was in 1980 when he joined Atlanta International Raceway. Five years later, he became the general manager. A year later, he became a part of the Daytona International Speedway management team. One and a half years later, he was named as Talladega Superspeedway's general manager. In two years time, he became the International Speedway Corporation's Vice President. He took over the post until 1994.

In 1999, he became the COO and senior vice president of the company. He was considered as the first person outside of the France family to have operated the company. A year later, he began serving as the company's president and became one of the five members of the board of directors.
