Masatoshi Ito atteneded Yokohama City University. He is the founder, and honorary chairman of Ito-Yokado retailing group. The company was founded in 1920 as Yakado Company, but in 1971, it changed its name to Ito-Yokado Company. In 1991, they bought 7-Eleven franchise from Southland Corporation.

His company is also the Japanese franchisee of Oshman's sporting goods stores, Robinson's department stores, and Denny's Japan Co. Ltd.. Ito has been an active supporter of Peter F. Drucker and Masatoshi Ito Graduate School of Management.
