He is one of the members of the Pritzker family renowned for their ownership of the exquisite Hyatt hotels. John Pritzker is a former executive in the family fortune who decided to sell his shares in order to focus on developing his boutique hotel business. In 2011, he merged the New York-based Thompson Hotels and Joie de Vivre chain which is based in San Francisco to form the Commune Hotels. From its 42 hotels, the company has earned an approximate revenue of $380 million.

John Pritzker and his wife Lisa have pledged to donate $15 million to San Francisco-based University of California which would help in the building of the pediatric emergency room facilities at the UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital.
