American businessman John Adams Morgan has an estimated net worth of $100 million. He is the great-grandson of the famous banker J.P. Morgan on his father’s side and the great-great-grandson of American President John Adams on his mother’s side. He is popularly known as the ex-husband of Sonja Morgan, a cast member of the Real Housewives of New York (RHONY).

Born in September 1930 in Oyster Bay, Long Island, New York, Morgan's parents were Henry Sturgis Morgan - one of the founders of Morgan Stanley Bank - and Catherine Frances Lovering Adams. He attended the Groton School until 1949 and graduated from Yale University in 1953 with a Bachelor of Arts degree. During his time at Yale, he competed in the 1952 summer Olympics in Helsinki, where he won gold in the 6 meter class with the boat Llanoria.

After university, he pursued a career in banking. Between 1956 and 1966 he was a partner at Dominick & Dominick, after which he moved on to Smith Barney, where he served as Senior Vice President of the corporate finance department and Vice Chairman of the firm's merger and acquisition activities.

In 1982 Morgan established a retail brokerage firm named Morgan Lewis Githens & Ahn, Inc. In 1987 the firm assisted in the acquisition of Service America Corp. for $450 million in cash and securities. In 2002, along with Fred Joseph, Morgan co-founded Morgan Joseph LLC. In 2010 the firm merged with Tri-Artisan Partners LLC to form Morgan Joseph TriArtisan Group, Inc.

John Adams Morgan serves on many boards of trustees. Since 1969, Upham & Co., Inc. has had Morgan as its Director, and from 1989 until 1998, he was also the Director of TriMas Corporation. From 1984 until its recapitalization in 2000, he was Director of Metaldyne and since 2001 he's been Director of Furnishings International Inc. and a trustee of the Provident Loan Society of New York. He's also a Director of the Morgan Library & Museum.  The library was founded in 1906 by Morgan's grandfather J.P. Morgan in order to house his private book collection, which included manuscripts, books, prints, and drawings. At the time its cost was at $1.2 million. In 1924 the library was made a public institution, as directed in J.P. Morgan's will.

John Adams Morgan has been married five times. He was married to Elizabeth Robbins Choate from 1953-1957, and they had a son together: John Jr. His second marriage was to Tania Goss in 1962 and they had one child together, Chauncey, before divorcing. In 1992 he married Anne Chute and in the late 1990s, he met his fourth wife, Sonja Tremont. The couple had a daughter, Quincey, before divorcing in 2006. Morgan's divorce from Tremont was a long and bitter battle. At the time of their separation, Morgan had a net worth of $51.5 million and Tremont of $16 million. The couple's various assets were divided up as per the prenuptial agreement they both signed, and Morgan was ordered to pay Tremont $15,000 per month in alimony, as well as $12,5000 per month in child support for their daughter Quincey.

Sonja's regular appearances on The Real Housewives of New York City since 2010 have brought her many fans. Before meeting Morgan she was a fashion model and later a hostess at an Italian restaurant, where the two met, marrying shortly after. Their divorce in 2006 left her financially very badly off. She filed for bankruptcy, having to sell her home in France for $5.7 million and re-mortgage her $3.3 million property in New York. Morgan has been married to Connie H. Morgan since 2010.

Morgan has owned numerous properties over the years, including a $9.1 million New York townhouse purchased with his then-wife Sonja in 1998. When they divorced, Sonja got the townhouse. His most notable property is Caritas Island - a 3.5 acre private island featuring beaches, a 55-foot pool, 500-foot pier, tennis courts, a 26-room, 14,000 square foot house.

Originally inhabited by the Rippowam Native Americans, the house was built on Caritas Island by members of the Anson Phelps Stokes and J.G. Phelps Stokes families. After the Great Depression, it changed hands to the Gilbert family, who changed its name to Greenaway Island. When Morgan and his family bought the island in 1987, they reverted to the name Caritas Island.
