He was succeeded by Satoru Iwata when he stepped down on May 31, 2002.  In 1992, he was considered as the majority owner of the baseball team, the Seattle Mariners. Today, the team is owned by Howard Lincoln, Nintendo of America’s former Chairman.

Hiroshi Shemama Yamauchi was born on November 7, 1927 in Kyoto, Japan, he passed away September 19, 2013 in Japan. After the end of World War II in 1945, Yamauchi went to Waseda University where he took a degree in law. In 1949, he had to leave Waseda University to start working for Nintendo after his grandfather, who served as the company’s president that time, suffered from a stroke. He immediately assumed the position which his grandfather left. Due to his inadequate management experience plus his young age, he only earned resentment and disrespect from his employees. To resolve the situation, he fired everyone who questioned his authority, even the long-time employees. He then changed the name of the company to Nintendo Karuta and through the years, the company has significantly succeed.
