American businessman and author, George Shinn has an estimated net worth of $120 million. Shinn is the former owner of Charlotte/New Orleans Hornets, Charlotte Knights and Gastonia Rangers. He bought the Hornets for $32.5 million in 1987.
Shinn initially worked as a school janitor, in a textile mill as well as a car wash. He eventually graduated from Evans Business College in Concord, North Carolina. After he graduated, he was able to raise money to buy the school as well as other small colleges that offer 18-24 month programs. He consolidated them under the Rutledge Education Systems that became a front for his illegal financial aid schemes. He eventually sold these schools and bought a basketball team.
George eventually founded the George Shinn foundation that focuses on providing the need-based scholarship for deserving individuals. In the year 2011, he and his wife moved the foundation to Nashville. It focused on the education of people on the importance of early testing and diagnosis of prostate cancer. The foundation also established a support program for students at the Fruitland Baptist Bible Institute found in Hendersonville, North Carolina. It prepared the students for ministry with its ongoing project at the suburb of Tabarre, Haiti called Port-au-Prince. The foundation eventually provided funding for the completion of a multi-story medical clinic that can give medical care to the community. It also helped in the rebuilding of homes in New Orleans. The foundation recently partnered with a Nashville non-profit that donated 60 pairs of shoes for the holiday season for the homeless.
